Georges Carpentier "The Orchid Man"
Спорт
Georges Carpentier was a boxing champion from France. He fought many great fighters in his era, across many different weight classes. He was known for his speed, grace, unorthodox style, boxing skills, footwork, and a really sharp right hand punch.
There were no highlight videos of Carpentier, so I decided to make one!

Real talk, luv watching the old school fighters.
I am crying right now to see my great Uncle, flesh and blood, in action and not just in photographs. I saved (all) the family photos, and I was told he was a brilliant boxer now I can see he was amazing and I am so proud! He fought Jack Dempsey and went down for the count, but for years I was told he broke his finger in the third round and was disqualified so now I know the truth. Jack Dempsey fought fair and square and won the fight in July 2, 1921.

Gloria, this is going to sound very odd but are you aware there’s a bloodline of George Carpentier here in England? It’s a well known story in my family. I’m sat with my dad right now discussing it again and I mentioned I’d seen you comment on this. I don’t think anyone in France is aware of us. Where are you based?

Excellent work. Nothing like seeing an old time great get some appreciation. If you haven't you should check out his book "Boxing as fine art".
With the tiniest bit of footage and a language your subscribers don't even speak you've created something very memorable here.
You did a really good job with old material. Your video outlines what made Carpentier famous, his speed, precision, elegance and incredible punch. Most of his career, which started with Boxe Française at the age of eleven, he fought adversaries well above his weight. He was the first French champion of the world as middle heavyweight, and did a good job against Dempsey fighting for the all categories title, in front of 120000 spectators in a purpose built stadium, until he broke his right hand. What he was most proud of was his 14-18 war as a “reconnaissance” pilot, taking pictures of battle fields, in particular at Verdun. Thank you for bringing my grand father back to younger generations memory. Philippe Sudreau, grand son of GC.

Each time I read these comments I find more and more about my great Uncle. Few knew he also was descended from Marc Antoine Charpentier (famous French composer) as well as Jean Baptiste Charpentier (famous artist). In France his name is pronounced Charpentier and this also is the French spelling. He is descended from French nobility and ancient Kings of France who lived in Normandy, France and settled in 1066. Philippe Sudreau we are related on my grandmother's side of the family Zoe Marie Carpentier. Tell me more about his broken right hand I was told he broke his finger fighting Jack Dempsey.

I did not know my great Uncle, George Carpentier, was a pilot in WWI, and my grandfather who married Zoe Carpentier (George Carpentier's cousin) fought in WWI as he was French on both his mother and father's side of the family. He felt it was his duty and he wanted to impress my grandmother, Zoe.

Now, I know why I became a pilot as I have a great love for aviation. When I started flying few woman even considered to take it seriously as a career. Carpentier was a boxing prodigy- turning pro at the age of 14. He fought from welter to heavyweight. What I like about him is- that in almost all of his photos, he is smiling. He lived a long life and looked as though he enjoyed every minute of it. A true bon vivant! Nice video- and very much deserved.

He began his career at 147 , not fly weight.
awesome
This man was a true Boxing genius, he beat so many men supposed tougher, and much bigger than himself. He had a very personalised training regime, and could fire that jab out like a piston, setting up his seriously hard right for the finish. But, not only that, he studied the psychology of the fighting man, and the men who he met in the ring, truly showing that physicality was but one part of the true fighting man, and he exalted in the thought process behind the fight. A true hero ( just look up his war record) a great advocate of the sport, a true gent, and a man who put a lot of stock in his trainer Francois Descamps who he remained faithful to from a very young age. His book 'My fighting life' is a must read for any Fan of the noble art, and as such is a Scholar Select work, selected by Scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilisation as we know it.
Un texte profond, une musique magistrale, un homme exceptionnel, un chef-d'oeuvre ! Bravo ! J'attends avec impatience un hommage à Marcel Cerdan !

Yeah man he was great. Great footwork, body movement and some nice combinations
Carpentier was unlucky that when fighting for the heavyweight title he had to take on one of the very best, Dempsey. Against a lesser fighter he may very well have become world champion.

It's crazy because you couldn't find a song that fits better Carpentier: at the beginning they speak in french and talk about the hardness of the skull... which is one of the most famous Carpentier''s quotes ! and even the girl singing "you gotta move child" sounds like "you gotta move Jack" watching his fight against Dempsey...
make durans highlights it would be great
He was to small some would say but then again so was ezzard charles for walcott and dempsey for willard. Prolly one of my favorite game fighters who fought dempsey
In his fight against Dempsey he broke his thumb after this right hand. Dempsey stated that if he could have follow it by a few other punches, the outcome of the fight may have been different. Carpentier manager also declared before the fight that his boxer should win quicky, in the first 4 rounds, after that, his chances will dramatically decrease. In his fight against Senegalese Battling Siki, it is said that they had agree not to hurt each other with power punches, like an exhibition. But after a powerful right hand by Carpentier, Siki got angry and knocked him out. He later stated "Hitting a negro skull, everybody knows that in the world of boxing, this equates to a near certainty of breaking the hand"
