GEORGES AND GYORGY CZIFFRA JR FATHER AND SON IN CONCERT 1965. FRANCK SYMPHONIC VARIATIONS.

A short brisk overture, Colas Breugnon by Kabalevsky opens this concert. Cziffra Jr is then joined by Gyorgy Cziffra senior in a gently lyrical and poetic performance of Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations. This was a time of great celebrity for Cziffra and he was adored by audiences in his adopted country France. Cziffra Jr. was to die in a house fire in 1981 after which Cziffra never played with orchestra again. His last Liszt recording is dedicated to his son's memory.

This is so saddening, considering what would happen to the son.

From 16:16 to 18:58 is, without any doubt in my mind, one of thee most viscerally raw and untainted moments in all of music literature. What a phrase this is by expressing our humanness for the sake of just pure and raw emotion of the mind, which is our soul. Nevermind the audible aspects, but visual of how Cziffra is just melting facially and emotionally. If this does not make you want to pour out crying and yearn for life for the sake of life in and of itself, for something higher, then you are not human.

This performance has been uploaded by others before but I've included his son's contribution and the warmth of the audiences reception that greets Cziffra senior's entrance and playing of the lovely Franck Symphonic Variations.

its interesting to see that cziffra does not use in slow tempi the french cortot legato for the melodies. he takes off the weight of the arm at every note. here we have a significant difference.

Cziffra is the reason for my ongoing piano addiction, even though I started learning much too late in life and am relying on slim odds of coming even close to my intended level of mastery. Hearing and seeing performances like this makes it worth every effort.

Was there an encore done after this? I have no trouble seeing Cziffra sitting back down to play something at the end after the cutoff! Does anyone know?

The alleged suicide of Cziffra Jnr was a tragedy that shook both parents to the core but this video is a most pleasant reminder of father and son doing what they enjoyed so much. I've certainly heard more interesting versions where experienced conductors don't fall into several traps that lure Cziffra Jnr but as a historical document it is a priceless piece of film that derserves preservation. As for Cziffra Snr's final Liszt recording that is dedicated to his son - this is an understandably more sober offering than almost anything he had previously recorded and would have sounded so much better had he used a different piano to that of his (by then) standard and rather shrill Yamaha 9 foot concert grand.
