I saw George in a tiny bar, the Little Bear in Evergreen, this same year. He had apparently just discovered the joy of cordless guitar...after duckwalking across the top of the bar and back a few times, he began hopping from table-top (good, sturdy cable spool tables). He just totally destroyed the joint and everyone in it. One of the peak rock & roll experiences of my life. Rock on George and you bad-ass DDs!

I had his first album, George Thorogood and the Destroyers on 8 track in my AMC Gremlin 😅 then the first live album...I seen him in Glasgow a few years back but I think I prefer his music pre saxaphone, it's just what I grew up listening to.🎉

I have to agree hole heartily will Stormbringer Coming's post from a year ago that Thorogood came along when Rock N Roll was going thru one of it's many changes with the pure rawness of Punk and the catchy dance beats of Disco. Thorogood's love and respect of the Blues heroes is unmatched. Who and the hell opens their show with 3 Elmore James songs in a row, no one! then a big bad Bo Diddley favorite, Cocaine Blues by T.J. "Red" Arnall & Johnny Cash, the great John Lee Hooker song One Bourbon....a rockin' version of Brownie McGhee's So Much Trouble and then ends the show with 3 songs from the master, Chuck Berry. George also throws in another Elmore James favorite Madison Blues. It's Approaching 40 years of Thorogood rockin' out the music he loves........the BLUES!

Nobody kept the blues flame alive more during this time (late 70's) than George. He doesn't get the credit he deserves. Always paid tribute to the blues heroes before it became fashionable. Yeah... the show cooks also. Never had a bad show.

The Yardbirds with Clapton and the Animals both recorded with Sonny Boy Williamson. The Stones insisted that Howling Wolf appear on Shindig with them in the mid 60s. American blues musicians were very popular in Europe in the early/mid 60s. Stones recorded at the Chess studios in Chicago just to pay tribute. It was fashionable long before George.

I recall reading about this gig in the Pink Section. Those of us from the Bay Area know of what that was. This is one of the new groups that were being raved about. George wasn't punk or new wave but was, along with groups associated with that, like Graham Parker & The Rumour and Mink DeVille, a band bringing back hot live music to the club level, taking old styles and revving them up. I recall reading about a SF gig that got shut down because he was too loud. 1978 is one of my favorite music years.

George was a force of nature. Most of the tunes were not original but he played in a very original style - unmistakably his own. And if you ever saw him perform back in the day, you would have seen one of the greatest performers out there. He knew how to put on a rock show among rock shows. I never heard this great recording before - thanks for posting! It's up there with the April 8, 1978 performance at the Bijou Caf'e in Philly - and a largely different set list.

+David Rafter I too have that show from 1977 on KSAN at The Boarding House down on Bush St. which i believe was his first time in San Francisco. It was a Wednesday night Jamboree & hootenanny (as George put it) The only problem is i only have the first 45 minutes due to not flipping over the 90 minute cassette to record the rest of show on KSAN . for 42 years i have been kicking myself for not recording the rest of that great show. Richard Gossett introduced him and the set list for the first 45 minutes was: Baby, Please Set a Date. New Hawaiian Boogie. B.B.Q. Blues. Move It On Over. Cocaine Blues. Wanted Man. A Picture From Life's Other Side. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. I sure would love to have the second half of that this show.
