George Santos is a Terrible Person and the American Dream

Ойын-сауық

Is there valor in scamming your way through a system that failed you, even if you hurt people along the way? What is the value of the lies we tell ourselves about ourselves? Can you be morally bankrupt and a camp icon? The questions of America, explored with friend of the show Kat Tenbarge.

    George Santos didn't intend to become a politician. He ran for politics, for the purpose of committing campaign finance fraud - which he would have gotten away with, if he hadn't won. He had ran before, got good money on the scam, decided to do it again, but won this time, so he faced a lot of scrutiny he wouldn't have otherwise faced, and was exposed, as a result

    I've been subjected to several queer pathological liars, and I always feel a certain level of contempt and cringe toward their behavior for having to share at least one demographic with them. When it becomes apparent that they're just lying and trying to entertain for attention, all I can think about is how to completely distance myself from them for my own mental well-being. George Santos is so difficult to hear about, even when someone like Bowen Yang is doing a caricature of him, because that same feeling of in-group cringe is such a challenge to sit with. I think his story is important and worth dissecting like you and Kat did in this episode, but I can't imagine ever wanting to pay for his time on cameo or elsewhere, even if just for a laugh 💀 I dunno, the joke has been dead since at least last November

    The fact that I had to constantly check myself from dismissing Kat because of her vocal fry is evidence of internalized misogyny. There's this whole discourse that I recently discovered on people specifically disliking the way many young women talk and how it's tied to pervasive misogyny. Kat is smart and eloquent and her conclusions flow logically from her premises. She doesn't fumble around with finding the language to illustrate her viewpoints. The fact that her vocal fry bothers me at all is shameful and tells me that I have much to unlearn and relearn as a feminist.

    There's something about charismatic tricksters that transcends the crimes they commit. As someone who loves to dive into Mormon history, the more court documents and journals and first-hand records I read, the more clear it becomes that Joseph Smith did some really disgusting things. However, it's hard not to look at him and see this guy making silly claims, like calling himself a king, or trying to buy Texas, or sending a guy on a mission because he wanted to be postmaster! It's hard to condemn a man who see visions by sticking his face in a hat!

They've embraced their "make crap up as you go" misunderstood villain arc because they get attention and money from it, except that Santos took it too far and into politics. About what you said on people relating to the "everyone embellishes their resume", I think this happens because a lot of Americans feel that they can't achieve success without this, and even when they do, it's low chances that they get the job they are hoping for. It's kind of assumed that everyone embellishes their resume to the degree of playing up their strengths aignificantly (not outright lying, though). This makes it hard for people to feel like they would be hired exactly as they are with the actual achievements or credentials they do have.

    I think one way to succeed as a fraud or a scammer is to be online and posting as much and as bold as possible. For example, I feel like SBF did a mediocre job at this since he was just talking business. He should have been streaming League of Legends while arguing with Kanye West, or he could have befriended Charlie Sheen and party while on IG live... or he could have started a Cameo account 😄 Bottom line is, it has to be low key whacky and outrageous otherwise you'll end up a boring irrelevant felon 😄

    Jeffree Santos 😂 The parallels between them are uncanny. I remember Liam Mcevoy made a two parter about Jeffree’s troublesome past if anyone is interested.

    George Santos reminds me of a John Waters character. He's so campy and slightly evil.

    Santos can absolutely be a Jewish last name, and it does in fact appear on lists of official Sephardic Jewish surnames, just fact checking, I don't care at all about George Santos, or whether or not he's Jewish, or whether or not anyone is anything for that matter.

    Yeah, especially for Brazil, cause there was a time a lot of jews fled here from persecution in the Iberian peninsula and changed their last names to more Christian sounding names

    Amazing episode, I love how articulate Matt is and the guest seems nice but I can’t stand the vocal fry 😭 makes me take it a little less serious but great job tho, can’t wait to seeing what’s next!

    Unrelated to the topic at hand.....but I love that shirt! You have such a cool style. It's like if David Bowie had a normcore era. I guess he kinda did now that I think about it. You'll wear a simple baseball cap and a sleeveless t-shirt....but with an androgynous alien mystic Botticelli face. Also...the flow and vibe of the podcast is so....comfy. I look forward to my queer ASMR cozy time whenever I see a new episode drop. I'll wait till I get home from work, take a shower, get comfy, and hit play. Doing that right now. :}

    This episode was strangely fascinating. It was probably the first episode where I haven't felt I understood the subject better afterwards. This relates to the subject and their repeated misrepresentation of self, rather than the excellent hosts who explored the subject thoroughly.

    You think about all the stories about Robin Hood, super-powered vigilantes of varying moral grayness, and cops who bend or break rules to serve “justice;” it is small wonder why scammers and thieves become glorified. The stories we pass down often affect the values our children/the younger generations hold through their lives.
