George Romero’s final novel “The Living Dead” shows what he wanted to do for Day of the Dead. The book weaves all the movies together in a single timeline and it is a masterpiece. It really is the final zombie story

Albert Wesker 1969 They should have. They don’t even focus on zombies in most of the films. Resident Evil 7 isn’t even about zombies. Not a single undead. It instead focuses on some crazy cannibal family. There are these creatures that echo zombies that attack you behind every door.
The scene where that guy gets his vocal cords ripped out makes my stomach turn every single time. I'm not the kind of person to get grossed out by gore, but that makes me not want to watch the third movie. That, to me is the sign that George Romero is the king of zombies.

I am from Monroeville, sadly I think the only thing left in the mall from the movie is a small bridge over a pond. They even had to petition to keep it a few years ago! Also there is a Zombie Walk every year at the mall, and they often turn one of the empty stores into a little museum around that time.

Day of the Dead is one of my favorite films, simply for Bub. I damn near shed a tear over a flesh eater. Partly due to Frankenstein's character set up of him, his eccentricity as an actor really made Bub come alive on his own, no pun intended.
I'd also argue the female lead in Dawn was not a throw away character. She starts weak and grows, that's her arc. She's useless to the others because she's pregnant and can't be trusted to handle anything but she learns how to shoot and even learns to fly the helicopter in case something happened to Flyboy. Hell, she's the reason they survive in the end!

and you have to learn reading because he said ONE of the best directors of all time. and i gree, even after watching stuff from kubrick, hitchcock, spielberg, lynch, fincher and what not. also, even if he says that it's his favorite director. so what? you can't compare romero's dawn to the dead to, let's say, spielberg's duel/jaws or hitchcocks psycho/the birds. even in the horror genre there is too much difference in style. if you love zombieflicks, romero is your fav director. simple as that!
I'm going outta box saying this, but I'd say that *_Day of the Dead_* may be my personal favorite out of the original Dead Trilogy (or entire series). I enjoy the underground military-science facility and the crew's futile attempt to find a cure. I also love how it has an actual human antagonist in Captain Rhodes, he feels like an actual threat to the protagonists more than the zombies themselves. It also shows how living isolated during a zombie apocalypse could cause severe mental deterioration. And the amazing music score by John Harrison (the same guy who'd go on to direct the _Dune_ miniseries in 2002).

I have to respectfully disagree with your comment about the female characters in this series being badly written. If I may offer my humble defense, I think Romero's female characters are one of the most interesting aspects of his films. Barbra always gets criticized for going crazy and being useless, but I personally agree with Judith O'Dea's take on it: she's just responding in the way that most people probably really would react in that situation. In the case of Fran, she's pregnant, and as the film goes on she has to stand up for herself to show the guys that she isn't just their "den mother." Note how they accept FlyBoy despite his incompetence but leave her for household tasks. Then there's Sarah, who's the hero of the film and stands her ground against Capt Rhodes throughout. Yeah, Fran does seem a bit useless in that particular situation, but I wouldn't say that scene represents her or the female characters of the Dead series overall.

Sarah and Remake Barbara are my favorite characters from this series. One of my favorite parts of Day is when she gets slapped in the face by a hysterical Miguel and she just gives him a cold stare before he crumbles in despair. It's like the exact opposite of the Night scene where Ben slaps Barbara for freaking out in classic movie female tradition. I honestly think it might've been an intentional call back.

The zombie movie sub genre is well known to go through peaks and lows in terms of relative quality and popularity that have been on going since White Zombie (1932). However, the sub genre has probably become most popular in the mainstream since Resident Evil and 28 Days Later (both 2002) than it ever has before including when I call the "Golden Age" of the late 60's to the mid 80's! Not really. Watch how modern people are as far as filming things with their -Smart- phones and then take into consideration how obsessed those same people are with uploading that content to their -Social- media accounts so they can get Twitter -famous.- I would guess that was the idea of having them nonchalantly filming like that. Not sure why James and so many people don't understand that. Romero always had relevant social commentary in his films to remind people that we real-world humans are far worse monsters then the zombies in his films.

Overuse of screens can lead to loss in tissue volume in the grey matter area of our brains (the front lobe). This is the processing area of the brain responsible for prioritising and planning. Another affected area is the insula, the core circuit for mediating compassion and empathy for others. By giving children smartphones at an early age and allowing them an almost uncontrolled access society is creating an army of the living dead, without the ability to feel empathy or plan for the future. And so I believe there are teenagers today capable of emotionelessly filming their friends fighting for their lives or dying . I belive there are more of them than you think.

I remember watching Day of the Dead as a young teenager, with a deep affection for zombie flicks. Master of gore, and the practical effects are amazing, even today.

Like, 1978 being a particularly bad year, but some progress made for humanity to survive through to 1985, in the early months of which everything went quickly to shit again. You have to see the continuity, such as it is, as all the films being set at roughly the same time, probably in order. The later post-2000 ones featured lots of technology that wasn't available "yesterday" in 1969 or whatever, but they are just films after all. There's a loose continuity, some characters are given one, a bit, even if it doesn't make sense in an utterly concrete scheme. Some of these I have no problem deciding which is best.
The children zombies that attack Peter actress (Ken Foree) at the airport are the niece and nephew of Tom Savini! Also yes Barbra (Night) and Fran (Dawn) were depicted as weak. However Romero regretted doing that and that's why Sarah (Day) was written as a strong character. I took a trip to Monroeville for Living Dead Weekend 2018 it was Dawn's 40th anniversary. Yes the mall is more modern but if you're a fanatic there's enough left to let you know where you are! The entire cast of Dawn are great and very friendly people.
George achieved something amazing and that is making a trilogy that contains 3 masterpiece's each unique in it's own way.

Yes. Romero is dead. Died in 2017. You didn't realize it until now. R.I.P.
My uncles ringtone is “ they’re coming to get you Barbara” and it’s great.

No mention of Asia Argento, Dario Argento's daughter, being in Land of the Dead?

Her dad must have did some weird satanic ritual abuse on her. He probably busted that ass right out lol then it turned her into a sick monster as well. Thats why these sick fucking demons need to be straight up lynched. They fear us, rightfully so.
I remember call of the dead in call of duty
RIP George A Romero Great filmography.
I'd love to see James review Train To Busan. Easily one of the best zombie movies ever made.
Is there a of the dead collection or something?
I definitely appreciate these videos a lot. It allows me to lightly experience these movies without the gore causing worse terrors and mares on me. Thank you for this tasteful fusion of information and cuts of content from the original work.
The zombie pie fight scene in '78's "Dawn" was a bit too much!

@Jimmy S Bro this not a Tarkovsky film, it's a Zombie film about some guys who try to survive in a mall full of giant Smurfs, what's deep about it?
i love that this is from 2013, your videos really hold up no matter how much time goes by and they stand the test of time , i love your reviews. just the right amount of opinion and fact and movie trivia and the story lines are just right were it doesnt ruin seeing the whole movie for me but instead pumps me up to see the whole movie instead of ruining it for me.
George Romero is revered here in Pittsburgh. So much so that our local theme park, Kennywood, gets a Romero theme for a few weeks in October. Nothing goes together better than Funnel cakes, rollercoasters and Zombies.
Hes a legend shame he never made his resident evil version in 99.
R.I.P Joe Pilato and Richard Liberty and of course George A Romero. :(
IT'S CINEMASSACRE'S MONSTER MADNESS!!!

Oh man, I had no idea that we lost Joe Pilato this year! RIP. You made Day of the Dead the masterpiece that it was!
I always loved “Day of The Dead”. It had a creepy atmosphere and interesting story line. I loved the “head pull” gag and I couldn’t figure out how they pulled it off. And C’mon who doesn’t want to be bff’s with Bub?

I wanna give Bub a high five
Day of the Dead is by far my favorite zombie movie. Always been a big Romero fan since I was a kid. I don't have tattoos, but if I ever got one, I always imagined it being Bub holding the revolver before shooting Rhodes
At 9:06 ... Joe Pilato signed your cover, huh? That's pretty bad-ass!
Now you're telling me you don't have the SHIT you need?!
Dawn of the Dead 1978 is still my favorite Zombie movie, well besides Shaun of the Dead but consider that more a comedy, but definitely an elite Zombie movie in it's own right. Also Day of the Dead is definitely under appreciated, definitely a top tier Zombie movie, too bad that was his pique. After that Romero films went down hill. RIP to the man but definitely wish he had a chance to make a high budget Zombie movie before he died. Last movies he made were awful made for TV like movies.
I wish more people would talk about the 1990s remake. I love how they modernized Barbara's character while keeping her vulnerability (not just a generic female action hero you'd see nowadays) and the zombies looked fantastic! I feel like it's very underrated when compared to the other films in the series.
Grande George Romero... Siempre en mi corazón... Saludos desde la ciudad de México...
mon-ROE-ville. Anyone here from Pittsburgh ear's tweak at that pronunciation of Monroeville?

I like daw the best and night as well... But I believe the trilogy is so good that if you picked any of the 3 to be the best nobody can be bad.
I love George Romero zombies movies. My favorites 1. Day of the Day 2. Dawn of the Dead 3.Night of the Living Dead 4.Diary of the Dead 5.Survival of the Dead 6. Land of the Dead I love Day of the Day soundtrack.
I can watch this again and again. Always fun when James talks about zombie stuff
I still cannot believe you got the late Great George A. Romero to cameo in your Living Dead one. That said, considering the nature of his films, to anyone who has access to his body, shoot it in the head. You never know.
R.I.P. Joe pilato 1949-2019. Fro Capt Rhodes to metalgreymon. You will be miss.😪

"The people in this movie just don't die, they fucking suffer." THAT should have been a tagline on the front cover of the VHS tape for Day of the Dead.
These are your best kind of videos dude, talking old monsters from both a film maker and fan perspective
Original dawn of the dead is my all time favorite zombie movie then original night of the living dead
One of my favorite of James' reviews
Your passion for horror film has always been contagious. Please keep up the great work :)
Did you know the working concept for Land of the dead was that it was going to be direct sequel to the super mario brothers movie where Mario is dead, and luigi and king koopa changed their names to hide their tragic pasts while the zombie apocalypse was manufactured by the Boos in order for them to take over the human world? Its title was going to be "Super mario bros 2:Dead Reckoning"

I am one of the few people who liked the OG mario movie cause of how bad it was, i kinda wish this sequel existed cause it sounds hilarious XD
I prefer the "extended" version. The intro sets the world better.
day of the dead was always my favourite since i was a kid, the gore is SOOO good.
I come back every year around the beginning of fall to watcg this. You're an amazing narrarator and commentator.
The best thing about the Romero films is the message each one tries to get across.
