I am playing this beautiful song for a life-long friend named Kevin. Kevin had a very rough abused life. He never could kick the habit of many kinds of drugs, and he died a month ago! I hope and pray he is in a much better place than he had to experience in young 50 years. He just could not quit.

The message in many of George Jones's songs is powerful, but I agree that this song is one that hits you right down deep. It is a horrible shame that the US just brushed off and washed thier hands of so many of thier own veterans and left them cold and alone. That in itself is enough to make a person cry, but when Jones sings about it, his amazing ability to put a mountain of emotion into each syllable just intensifies it 10 fold. Thanks for your comment.

One of my favorite songs by George Jones. No one can compare to him. Absolutely no one! Wild Irish Rose They sent him to Asia to fight in the war He came back home crazy and asking, "what for?" They had him committed, oh and medals and all To a mental hospital, with rubber walls They cut off the funding, oh they cut off the lights He hit the street runnin' that cold winter night Now the streets are the only place he can call home He seems oh so lonely, but he's never alone He lies there holding his Wild Irish Rose This crazy old fool with the smelly old clothes Oh, he could have had something much better, God knows Than a half empty bottle of Wild Irish Rose A baby named Scarlet with laughing blue eyes Has been in his wallet, all way back since 65 So much was forgotten, oh so far back in time Way down in the bottle of a river of wine You know they found him at Clark Street, and West 25th They can't even find a heartbeat, Lord his fingers are stiff It's just like they're frozen, and he's holding it tight But the habit, oh it's broken, this is Roses' last night He lies there holding his Wild Irish Rose But his soul's in a place where a real hero goes Now he's got something better, much better, God knows Than a half empty bottle of Wild Irish Rose

Yes it will... I'll never forget when this came out. In 1998 I think it was, I was at a Country Music club near my home called "Ghost Riders", and the DJ announced a new George Jones video, and it was the official video of this song... Ghost Riders was usually a pretty rowdy place, and I remember that it was almost totally quiet during the video... I had to wipe back tears. After it was over, someone asked the DJ to run it again because they were awestruck I guess. The video, and Jones usually delivery of emotion into his performances was such that if a tear didn't come to your eyes, you better just check your pulse son... because you have to heart.

Buddy Silver 18 hours ago THE POPPY FIELDS OF AFGHANISTAN There’s a town just north of Baton Rouge white houses row on row Where was raised a Southern family how proudly they did grow Now proud and happy parents watched their son grow to a man And they taught him truth and justice in this part of Louisiana Then one day there came a letter with his comrades he would go To a place across the water where the tears and blood would flow So he waved farewell to Louisiana and next morning at the dawn A broken hearted mother sent her son off to the Poppy Fields of Afghanistan Then one night as she lay a sleeping in a dream there at the door Stood a handsome looking soldier in American colors wore He said mother don’t you know me let me in I’m feeling cold But the crimson blood upon his chest the fateful story told There’s a town just north of Baton Rouge where a father proudly cries And a broken hearted mother wipes the tears falling from her eyes There’s a graveyard north of Baton Rouge the white crosses row on row Where he sleeps beside his comrades now In a graveyard where red poppies grow Yes he sleeps beside his comrades now In a graveyard where red poppies grow
