    I just saw Who Cares performed at the Vail Dance Festival, and I was surprised that the Festival added vocals. I didn't remember that being the way Balanchine staged it. This video confirms that my memory isn't going. The vocals that were added at Vail were a bit strange in that familiar lyrics were updated to make them more gender neutral. "I Got My Man" in "I've Got Rhythm" was updated to "I Got My Friend". It was jarring because the original lyrics were so familiar to us.

    My One and Only, in the best performance you will ever see on earth, is the goddess Elizabeth Loscavio, who does ALL the original steps (otherwise they have never all been done since Marnee Morris, who originated the role, retired); Liza is Jeremy Collins; Clap Yo' Hands is La Fosse, Lopez, Watts, and Fugate. I forgot to rave about Fugate in Fascinatin' Rhythm--almost as good as Patricia McBride.

    Ah the dnaces of Balanchine, it is classic american dance, he had vision, and inventiveness but bringing in some of the jazz broadway style dance into ballet peices, as well as his use of more angular holds and staging, but he still kept it ballet, and his dancers knew how to still dance the part not just execute movements to it like they do today so often, even if dancers today are technicaly cleaner, they are slaves to the music, and dont get me started on the lousy danced nutcracker last year

    I believe this is from the 93 Balanchine Celebration gala, where various ballerinas from other companies were invited to dance a variation or a pas de deux. Man I Love is the marvelous Viviana Durante with Robert La Fosse; Stairway to Paradise is Lourdes Lopez; Embraceable You is the always emetic and here pathetically aged Heather Watts with Jock Soto; Fascinatin' Rhythm is Judith Fugate; Who Cares? is Melinda Roy with Ronald Perry; (continued)

And I should qualify that remark about Loscavio's performance by saying that there is, somewhere, although I've never gotten my hands or eyes on it, a video of Marnee Morris dancing the role. Perhaps at the NYC Public Library Dance Collection.

    I have a question,please forgive my ignorance, I see a lot of informed and devoted fans in this comment section. I first saw this recording when I was about ten and knew nothing about ballet. The ballerina at 7:47 is STUNNING. But is it the cut of her costume, or, as I wondered when I first saw this at a young age, is she pregnant? I know body shaming is a big problem in the ballet word, where athleticism is so important next to artistry. In no way do I want to put this beautiful dancer down. She's incredible. This whole cast is.

    Many bad things happened after Balanchine's death, but Martins utterly and totally destroying the company was the worst--and his elevation of Watts to 'stardom' was and is the avatar of his miserable taste, sensationalism, and complete indifference to the wholesale slaughter of Balanchine. I was subjected to far, far too many Watts 'performances' (although I was tempted to spend every ballet she disfigured in the BAR, I watched them all) and she did nothing but get worse and worse.

  • @maseraticboychik
    @maseraticboychik11 жыл бұрын

    Sorry, but EVERYONE who has EVER danced ANY of Watts' 'roles' did them so vastly better as to reveal what an atrocity she truly was. She in every role was and always will be the DROSS Standard: hideously mannered, psychotic, and for the last two-thirds of her 'career' EMBARRASSINGLY technically INCOMPETENT.
