G.Gershvin_G.Balanchine - Who cares? 1970,avi

So many harsh critics below. This company did very well by Mr.B’s choreography, considering that they hadn’t the benefit of class with Balanchine that week, or year. A little slow, but with more than a little excellent technique. When I watch works by George, I tend not to judge the dancers because I view the performance as a marvel of his choreography. I only see him as he made the dances; I like to see what he did with familiar music. Always dazzling. Always lovable. His miracle of creativity lives on. So I’m grateful to any and all dancers who take on Balanchine.

Love that Balanchine choreography! Very tough to pull it off. Patty McBride had the original quirkiness and incredible finesse with the quick foot movements! These dancers did a great job with some tough steps. Music is so dreamy!!

In my opinion, this is definitely sub-par. The dancers clearly just aren't used to integrating a level of "casualness" to their dancing, something that Balanchine's choreography demands. Although they still make a valiant effort to show some character, it seems like it's just an afterthought on their way to hit the next position - this is especially visible in the men's part. The most "true to balanchine" part of this entire recording is when the guy does 4 pirouettes and then walks out of it. That looks like it would belong on NYCB's stage.

I agree. I felt the tempo was a bit sluggish at times and the dancing did not have the boldness, quickness, cheekyness you would expect to see. Very underwhelmed.

In my earlier comment I mentioned an abridged version of Who Cares from the 1980s featuring Baryshnikov and three ABT ballerinas: Christine Dunham (not Julie Kent, as I mistakenly thought), Leslie Browne, and Deirdre Carberry. Well, "brener dance" has uploaded it as part of a Baryshnikov Dances Balanchine program that opens with Apollo. The picture quality is not good but the performances are even better than I remembered, and the tempos are nice and brisk.

I was looking forward to seeing what they would do with one of my favorite ballets--especially the Gershwin score. The performance, I thought, was a bit disappointing. A lot of port de bras and epaulement were not fully completed. Some of the corps had little spirit and just looked out at the audience. The men, I think, looked most comfortable in the Balanchine loose-limbed American style and were more musical. The lady soloists were good. However, the Asian soloist in red did not have a clue; she probably had the best classical technique, but she didn't understand at all the use of the hips and the signature off-balance syncopation. She just seemed determined to perform the steps perfectly--and she did, like a classical ballerina. It would have been nice that two of the other men were involved in the soloist pas de deux. Not sure if Mr. B. cast only one male soloist in 3 pas de deux. The company has excellent feet and legs, but, with the exception of some ladies in the corps, I was not convinced that everyone was giving their all and really communicating those wonderful Gershwin tunes. A few people showed some joyful, flirtatious chemistry with their partners. Maybe the company just needs more rehearsal (coaching) and a more "who cares" attitude.

The dancers are actually lovely, but they simply don't have the looseness, the gaiety, or the jazz idiom necessary. So many moments that should be, as another comment says, slap-ball-change, NOT pas de bourree--or a chorus girl BUMP, not a polite ballet move. The double pirouette at the end of Embraceable You is exemplary, and the jumping girl does many good things, but...
