Prendetelo! Non dite che è un fanciullo. È forte... Può combattere e morire!

People forget how esteemed Weber was. Wagner was a fan who learned from him, and Mendelssohn based his MSND Overture on a scene from Oberon's Act II Finale ("And hard, the mermaids...").

Exquisite. I'm sure her arms were too far back, which makes the upper back muscles tense instead of relaxed. Technique has to follow style. I never thought I'd get to see any of this ballet. Thank God the Royal Ballet keeps this repertoire alive when other companies neglect it completely.

The slight jerkiness of that last, long push on Bluebeard's unblinking face was something I never knew I needed - it was the perfect cap on a deeply unsettling production. It was also interesting how Leslie Megahey and Elizabeth Lawrence made Judith's appearance seem to change from moment to moment. She's obviously a beautiful woman, but there are times when the angle and the shadows take her from breathtaking to almost grotesque and then back to normal all within the same shot - it was a brilliant way to further play with the idea that perhaps things in this story are not what they seem. A fantastic film adaptation of an already fantastic opera.
