Here's my thought on this: Foreman landed 249 of 543 punches. Schulz landed 229 of 482. Foreman landed slightly more, but Schulz had a slightly higher percentage. Both are important, but who was more effective? The problem is Schulz's percentage of landed hits isn't significantly higher than Foreman's. In fact, Foreman's amount landed is a tad more impressive than Schulz's percentage of landed hits. Schulz landed 229 hits which is 92% of Foreman's 249 hits. While Foreman's percentage of landed hits is 96.5% of Schulz's percentage of landed hits. I think this is one of those fights where you could see it go either way for both fighters. Schulz looked more energetic, but Foreman hit harder. A tie is fair, but you can't take the belt if you didn't earn it.

I had it 115-113 Axel Schultz. A few rounds were difficult to score, but Schulz needed a stoppage (which was never going to happen) because he sure as hell wasn't getting a close decision over Foreman in Vegas. Foreman won the fight, period. When a fight is that close, it can go either way, and it's not hard to see why Foreman got the favorable decision. He landed the more effective punches, and he constantly pressured Schultz all night long. I could also understand if Schultz was given the victory as well, but there wasn't a 2 point difference between them in this fight. It was a 1 point difference, or a draw, and Foreman did enough for the win. Just because someone you don't want to win ends up getting the edge on the scorecards doesn't always mean it was people behind the scenes pulling the strings. If Schultz wanted to "take" Foreman's belts, Schultz needed to separate himself from the champion with his performance. He didn't do that, and he left it up in the air. Schultz wasn't able to separate himself on the scorecards because Foreman was the better fighter at 46 years old, and it has nothing to do with his popularity at all.

115-113 Axel Schulz. Had Foreman needing that final round to keep his title and I think he definitely lose round 12. I do not see how people are saying Schulz won 8-10 rounds like some kind of blowout, though. Foreman outlanded Schulz and was the fighter coming forward with aggression the entire fight. Schulz generally ran away. However, Schulz ability to throw combinations and power shots in the second half of the fight (while Foreman only landed jabs and a few uppercuts) was the difference on my scorecard. With all the shady stuff going on with the IBF for this fight I do not know what to believe with regards to any funny business. I really like Gil Clacy, but think he had a bad night here - he was very unfair to George. There are numerous points at which Schulz throws a combo Foreman blocked entirely--typically after Foreman had snapped a nice jab and landed well to the body--and Clancy led in crediting Schulz with scoring. The entire HBO team completely ignored Foreman's body-punching, particularly his counters, and seemed not to notice the amount of damage Schulz was doing with headbutts. Given how the decision is criticised, I tried to be as charitable in scoring as I could be to Schulz, and still had it even. It's entirely proper that Foreman retained his title - all the more so given Schulz's repeated fouling.

An opposite example of this is Sugar Ray Robinson vs Marvin Hagler, where the runner won against the champion. And I think that's even more unfair. Because you're taking a title from a champion that you didn't earn, you didn't decisively beat him. But Leonard employed several dirty tactics that woo'd 2 of 3 judges (and ironically the Hagler camp shot themselves in the foot with Jo Jo Guerra, who was a replacement for a judge they veto'd, as that other judge was felt to be "partial" to Leonard, but who would have given the fight to Hagler...), especially his 30 second spurts, going by the time and again proven "what have you done for me lately", with some of those old fart/short attention span judges... Hagler also essentially gave rounds away early, by Boxing Leonard instead of fighting him (he did the same with Duran, gave him too much respect and boxed him for even longer, which is the only reason Duran didn't get destroyed in that fight, as great as he was). Hardly the same situation. I feel Foreman paid for this decision with his defence against Briggs, where in turn he got fked. It's Boxing... Well, one judge had it even, two judges had it very close. It's difficult. There is a comment below saying that Foreman's face was all distorted after this, but Axel Shultz was banged up too. Foreman was the champ, you need to bring it to him, he shouldn't have to chase you to engage you, (this is why I still dispute the Leonard Hagler fight). Towards the end, Axel was standing toe to toe with ol' George, but I think Georg overall took much of the earlier rounds. It was so close, and I guess it's up to how the judges see it: Was Schultz hitting and running? Was the old champion pressing the action? Overall, it was only a matter of what?....6 points for George. Major, major respect though for Schultz.

I had Foreman winning 116-114 or 6-4-2. I saw the fight the same way as Larry Merchant. I thought Foreman overall was the aggressor and landed the heavier shots. I was nice to Schulz in the beginning and gave him rounds for virtually running, but overall his movement never hurt George like Ali or Young. It only annoyed Foreman and Foreman kept coming with heavier shots. By round 9, I thought Foreman started coming on and I became annoyed with Schultz's running. The way Holmes fought Norton from rounds 12-15 is the way you take the title from the champion . Holmes stood there in round 15, lost his mouth piece and punched back against the stronger Norton. By the end of 15, he had Norton in major trouble. Holmes could have played it safe, but in stead he turned the championship rounds into a street fight. That's how you win a championship. Schulz didn't close the show on a man who was old enough to be his father and who had taken more punishment career wise than Schultz up to that point. Because of the ring age difference, this was Schulz opportunity to do what Marciano did to Louis, Ali did to Patterson, Holmes did to Ali, Tyson did to Holmes etc.

The undercard Flyweight championship fight with Romero vs. Tejedor was a good one too. I am an old man and relatively new to boxing,. I've been watching all the Tyson fights, learning and analyzing them. I could have called the undercard fight better than the two announcers, so aggravatingly biased that I had to turn off the volume so I could concentrate. Romero went the whole 12 rounds with Tejedor punishing him from round 4 on and on until he put Tejedor down in the final 10 seconds. I knew the whole fight that Romero would put Tejedor away. Go to around 65:35 for the last two rounds, and 57:32 for the knockdown. Great fight!

Punch stats don't dictate the outcome of a decision, there are more factors. And total punches are irrelevant, as it's on a round per round basis. Schulz forced Foreman to fight his fight, that's one. He controlled the flow of the fight. It was Foreman's job to cut him off and corner him, which he didn't and couldn't do. @@cockoffgewgle4993 No. He did not. For one they came into the fight already using that strategy, and two even if they had adapted it DURING the fight, this would only mean that they're of higher caliber, since not everyone can adapt to the opponent mid fight. If Foreman was forcing them to fight HIS fight, that'd mean he gets to do what he wants to do, planned to do and trained to do. Aka pummel them with his heavy hands, corner them, etc. Which is not what happened. The both went with stick and move, in and out. Except Morrison is far more athletic than Schulz and the harder puncher, and thus he could linger in the danger zone more and get off more punches. Schulz is slower (both hand speed and overall movement), not as powerful and thus had less overall output, but he still mostly got to fight the way HE and his team wanted him to fight. While it wasn't as clear cut as Morrison vs Foreman, it was still his fight. You're just a casual who doesn't understand boxing/fighting. Or maybe a fanboy? Just like Foreman was gifted a decision here, for boxing politics and monetary reasons, Foreman was then returned the "favor" by losing an arguably gifted decision to Briggs.

As he went from a laughable, fat, & largely disliked man, to the champion he later became for a second time. His image changed too, and we saw an evolution to how boxing journalists approached the topic. From the first fights in 87’-largely jokes- to the pounding he took in 92’ from Evander Holyfield. Then he got a shot, a shot he certainly hadn’t earned, but was a bid draw. The champ he beat, Michael Moore, wasn’t an exciting heavyweight. He had a contentious relationship with the press and his ego maniac of a trainer, Teddy Atlas. Alas, suddenly a slow recognition came that George had left his Mark in a way no one else ever will.

Contrary to popular myth, in no way shape or form did Schulz deserve the win in this fight. I viewed a high quality tape of the entire fight on the slowest motion setting with the volume turned off. That way I didn't have to listen to commentators Gil Clancy and Jim Lampley rave in awe for all those shots by Schulz that did not find their target. For the record, I had Foreman clearly winning rounds 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 11. 115/113 just as two of the three judges scored it. Even Larry Merchant, who in the past had poked fun at George, especially in the Holyfield and Alex Stewart fights, the former of which he called a "massacre" by Holyfield and the latter a "one point" win for Stewart had George winning here. Just because Schulz, an unknown who was giving little to no chance of winning and exceeded expectations does not mean he deserved to win. All that grappling and grunting by Schulz in close does not make his offense more effective. Foreman frequently drove Axel back with those jabs. Schulz spent much of the fight circling and back-peddling. He was largely ineffective having to throw from a distance so when he did manage to land his punches lacked effect as they barely made contact. Foreman landed the more authoritative punches with solid jabs and body shots and the occasional but very effective uppercut.

sometimes its hard to understand that not all punches thrown and landed carry the same weight. Foreman even at his age had more power in his left jab alone than most would have in their best straight cross or hook. and in this you can see him land that punch consistently along with some clubbing bodyshots. also for those not use to foreman it is easy to see his flailing arms while the other guys is punching and assume george is getting hit repeatedly, however the truth is that some of those shots are being blocked by those same arm flailing motions that make foreman look like a man in distress. and finally, the commentary team have said it repeatedly, foreman's skin is more prone to bruising and swelling because of his age so any damage he seems to be accumulating can be misleading based on that fact. i saw Foreman winning rounds 2, 3, (Axel did try to steal them in the last 30 seconds though) 4, 6, 9, 11 and the 12th can be debatable (foreman controlled the first 2:30, but schulz had some big shots towards the end)

George lost to a great fighter even as a foreman fan I can say he lost this fight much like the Morrison fight. Why didn't people try fighting George like this more? Maybe training sticking and moving is hard, honestly I don't know.

When a championship fight is close on the score cards and/or measuring performances value of the fight, I will 10/10 times go to the "Unofficial Traditional Champion's rule"; In order for a challenger to take the title crown from a respected world champion, especially a active legend status, the challenger can't win by small margins but must defeat the champion by a knock-out our performing an out-boxing classed fight where the dominance is VERY clear and the doubts are non. For this fight we have this "rule". If the challenger is prior the fight not a proven and highly regarded contender, then the "rule" is twice its power in effect! Axel Schulz deserve credit for being a better boxer then everyone believed as he proved this night he can box with the best. However to "beat the best" was not answered and did not go those extra miles needed to take away a legend's title. Big George Foreman won by a MD and retained his world title (Lineal/IBF/WBU). Foreman landed 249 of 543 punches - Schulz landed 229 of 482. Foreman landed slightly more, but Schulz had a slightly higher accuracy percentage (92%). Both are important, but who was more effective? The problem is Schulz's percentage of landed hits is not significantly higher than Foreman's. In fact, Foreman's amount of punches landed is a tad more impressive than Schulz's percentage of softer landed hits. Schulz landed 229 hits of Foreman's 249 hits. While Foreman's percentage of landed hits is 96.5% of Schulz's percentage of landed hits.

All of us big George Foreman fans, but we knew Schulz would never get a decision against George in Vegas, what a shame Axel Schulz fought brilliantly and clearly won the fight! George’s swelled up face, sunglasses and body language tell the story. Never like to see any fighter get ripped off!

"then IBF Director and IBF Ratings Chairman Anibal Miramontes stepped forward. Miramontes, who was holding the red IBF Champions Belt, took the microphone and said to Axel Schulz that, 24 years after this misjudgment from Las Vergas, he had brought the IBF World Championship belt with him to Munich and this one would now like to present to him"
