Became friends with Alex for a brief time way back in the late 80's. He worked part time at The Sports Authority as a loss prevention guy believe it or not when I worked there also. Found out he lived down the street from my parents house. Didn't talk about boxing much, he loved coming over and playing dominos. He was a extremely nice man, like a big kid but who loved his wife and daughter. Sorry to hear he died.

So he was working part time while he was a heavyweight contender? I guess he didn’t make that much as a boxer

George was 43 in this fight and 45 when he won the title from Michael Moorer almost twice these guys ages and beating most of them.

This was George's toughest fight of his comeback, or maybe entire career. Only time he looked hurt bad.

@@dondajulah4168 Foreman was knocked down four times in that fight and was wobbling around…hell yeah he was hurt. Most hurt he’s ever been in a fight.

George’s opponents understood much better than the announcers how much he could take you out at *any time* with a single blow. That had a LOT to do with why he could be so slow and so poor on his defense and still win as they hesitated to come in close and trying to win.

1000%! Even Gil was imploring Stewart to go after him and I'm thinking, "dude, you know how hard George punches". They ripped Holyfield for holding the last 2 rounds... meanwhile his 208lb body had been smashed and he thought all his teeth had been knocked out. LOL. Looks are completely deceiving with George.

Respekt to Stewart. He fight with courage and boxed beautifully in this Match.

@@kforcer I think Stewart was a good fighter.he gave holyfield two hard fights.hurt Michael Moorer....proved himself in this fight...I think his fight with Tyson...wasnt really any bad reflection on him.i think it just went to show how good tyson was on that night....tyson that night looked to be in phenomenal shape

@Cheesy Helmet This is one of the few times that I believe a fighter had clear loaded gloves. Before this fight George's face never busted up like on this night. It makes sense too from Steward/his corner to do it because he recently lost 2 big fights and had a shaky chin (George still had a big punch.) I think it makes it more impressive that George never was even hurt bad during this fight, shows his chin and heart

Excellent fight. Alex Stewart doesn’t get enough respect honestly. Been binging late 80s/early 90s heavyweight fights for a few months now and I’ve noticed that hbo really really enjoyed disrespecting these heavyweights at every turn. When they talked about Tyson they said his opponents sucked and he hadn’t proved himself. When they talked about Holyfield they said none of his performances were good and haven’t proved himself. When foreman fought they said he looked old and that his comeback was coming to an end every time he faced adversity. In reality these guys faced really game opposition while dealing with all the pressures that come with the spotlight

Yeah, HBO's commentary was horrible. They would almost look for reasons to disparage and dismiss fighters, even when there was so much good to talk about, for example, in Stewart's case, his tremendous power and incredible KO ratio. They barely bring that up at all and just focus on his losses.

@@kforcer exactly. Sometimes he didn’t have the best game plan but he had some great power and heart. I’m a big HBO fan and around the late 90s-early 2000s they definitely improved and got better as the years went on, but they definitely messed up in this era

@@bigdaddy4069 No, Holyfield was overrated and he woukd never won 1988 Tyson that was too strong and power for him. Holyfield was never a great ko artist, also in cruiser division.

God I miss when boxing merited spots on HBO on Saturday night. I swear, they had a knack for finding compelling fights in unlikely places like this one. Most figured Stewart would be cannon fodder, and after that brutal first round, it looked like it. But he got confident and the power he was known for going in to the first Holyfield fight showed itself. George looked like a horror movie victim at the end but that 10-7 round kept his comeback alive by the slimmest of margins.

Foreman was relatively unknown when he challenged Joe Frazier for his heavyweight crown in 1973, that's why he was a 3 to 1 underdog going in. Frazier had slipped since beating Ali in 1971. That fight had taken a lot out of him and Joe was 10 pounds heavier when he got into the ring with George. The only names on Foreman's record that stood out were 19-5 B-Level punchbag Chuck Wepner and 59-16 214 lb 6'0" George Chuvalo. Foreman's greatest win at his best was against little one 👁️ Joe inside two rounds. After knocking out the overmatched 54-27 5'10 196 lbs Jose Roman in the 1st, Foreman scored his second best career win against Ken Norton, who just broke Ali's jaw. 210 lb Norton's philly shell defense was atrocious against Foreman. George destroyed Kenny, again in under 2 rounds. This was the high point of his career. When George agreed to fight Ali, many feared he would seriously hurt the aging 32 year old former champion. ( 32 is still young, Wladimir fought Joshua in fight of the year at 41. Archie Moore fought Ali at 48 and Lewis beat Tyson and prime Vitali at 37. What was Ali doing at 37? He couldn't talk and his tremors were getting worse ..it's not how you start IT'S HOW YOU FINISH )

Foreman was always a slugger, never a patient slick boxer. That's why after the 3rd round, commentator Joe Frazier said, "George is rushing himself and not staying calm, he's not going to last." Frazier saw exactly what we all saw. Foreman Panicked in the sweltering heat and humidity which exceeded 90 percent and punched himself out, flailing away like a wild kitty cat. Ali sensed what was happening and patiently waited till George fell over ..And OMG did you see how ILLEGALLY LOOSE those ropes were!!! They were loose enough to allow Ali to avoid getting hit in the head leaving Foreman no choice but to go after the body. What should have been Ali's most difficult fight was actually one of his easiest. Fans worldwide demanded an immediate rematch but Ali knew better. If Ali was really the greatest why didn't he prove it instead of running 🏃💨 back to washed up one 👁️ Although Foreman went on to humiliate overrated one 👁️ for a second time after his loss to Ali, it was clear he was not the same fighter. He was knocked down twice and looked very vulnerable against Ron Lyle in their slugfest. Then several easy fights later, George was humiliated again, this time by featherfisted 19% KO's Jimmy Young. Being devastated and depressed Foreman retired from boxing.

Comeback Foreman was flattered by two things: #1. Frazier made george look better than he was. #2. Ali made norton look better than he was. Here's some more bum of the month club fighters with losing records they hand-picked for George: Frank Lux 19 wins 30 losses Mark Young 11 wins 13 losses Manoel de Almeida 3 wins 8 losses Mike Jameson 14 wins 15 losses Little 5'7" Qawi hit Foreman at will till he ran outta gas. Gerry Cooney fought George with his right arm tied behind his back as he didn't throw a single right hand punch. Holyfield and Morrison hit George whenever they wanted to and Alex Stewart gave Foreman the worst beating of his career closing both his eyes. Foreman proved he had the talent to compete in his second career...but that's it...in truth...old Foreman was a celebrity fighter by then. Nobody minded that he leap frogged real contenders to cherry-pick opponents with belts that suited him stylistically and were 35 to 50 pounds smaller. First Foreman with his 50 pound weight advantage tries Holyfield for a belt. Three fights later he tries Morrison who couldn't breathe with HIV for a belt. Then very next fight they hand George his belt on a silver platter for fightin career LHW Moorer. Big George wanted Absolutelyyy Nothing to do with POWER hitters Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Ike Ibeabuchi, David Tua, Oliver McCall, Andrew Golata and Mike Tyson because he was to slow and his philly shell defense was terrible. Boxing mafia/politics did the same for Ali as they did for Foreman. Just follow all the💲trails for answers.

I had it 94-93 Foreman mainly b/c of the 10-7 opening. Stewart came out extemely tight which was often a problem for him. Unfortunately he also gave away the 8th to the exhausted Foreman with no more rounds to spare.

​@@ConcernedResident_GiantStack You're right. The 1st knockdown should not have counted. Unfortunately the judges are instructed to honor the ref's rulings in their scoring whether they agree w/ them or not. In this fight, Richard Steele's error cost Stewart a draw rather than a loss.

I think it had a lot to do with fatigue. When a fighter is extremely tired and can barely see, their punches lose their accurately.

It's real easy to get your body shots knocked low by an elbow or glove. Especially if you have a punch coming at your face. But those punches to the bladder and hips suck even if they miss the jewels.

Gil Clancy is right about what Stewart needed to do to win, what he’s missing is how much it takes to actually move forward and make that happen. Foreman is one of the most debilitating punchers ever. Everything he hit you with took something out of you.

And people say Tyson wouldn't last against a 40+ year old Foreman! As this fight reveals, Tyson would've teed off on a statuesque target. Foreman doesn't last 5 rounds against a close to prime Tyson firing on all cylinders!!

I'm a huge tyson fan, but he ducked foreman. Cus told tyson foremans style is made for tyson and he would lose.

Awesome fight, Alex Stewart was really tough, getting up twice after being dropped by Foreman is a big thing in itself, plus Stewart was even better after getting up from those knockdowns.

If Alex Stewart did this to old man George Foreman, what would have Mike Tyson done?

Geroge in his 40s Fighting against Alex in his 20s. Never went down on the canvas, nicer sat down for the entire fight and still those Ring side announcers are talking one sided against him. Not that Alex is a bad fighter, he did a marvelous job and mad respect for that guy but still Announcers are talking one sided against George, then later when they announced that hes the winner, they were like Hes our friend and etc, seriously? seen these one sided commentary when Ali was fighting, then a little bit for Tyson

94-93, Alex Stewart Foreman: 1, 2, 3, 8 Stewart: 4, *5, (6-7; 9-+10) +: 2 point round Talk about a war! Foreman won round 1 clearly. Round 2, I didn't give Big George credit for the first knock down as I agree with Merchant that it was mainly due to that UGLY low blow by George. The second knockdown was legit and Foreman won spots of the round. But Stewart did such great work that I could only make it a 9-8 round for George. Round 3, Foreman actually did better in this round than he did in the one with two knockdowns. Stewart did great work, but Big George outmuscled Alex. I gave round 4 to Alex but Big George got in a lot of good shots. Alex outworked Foreman, though. Round 5 is typical of a lot of the action in this fight: Stewart banged up Foreman pretty bad, but Big George clearly stunned Alex bad. Do you give the round to the guy who caused the visible facial damage (Stewart) or to the guy whose punches almost had the other guy out? I gave it to Stewart but it could go either way. Rounds 6-7, I didn't rescore this but memory tells me that I agree with Letterman that Alex won these. Round 8, huge round for Big George. He could've knocked out Stewart if the ref didn't stop the action after Stewart spit out his mouthpiece. But Big George got away with several ugly low blows, so I'm OK with it. Rounds 9-10, memory says I agree with Letterman. Round 10, I think, the ref gave George a deduction for the low blows. (Finally.) This fight could've gone either way, depending on you scored round 5. I'm not sure how the official judges scored it round by round, but I see nothing wrong with the 94-93 score for either man. (Two judges had it 94-93 for Foreman.) Not sure how one judge scored it 94-94 as that seems mathematically impossible when using the 10-point-must system.

Big G has to watch those low blows. Must have taken his face over a month to heal.

Great match! Alex may have lost, but not Phically/hits.. Miss this boxing time zone!

I once had a George Foreman lean mean fat grilling machine. Once you start using it you can really understand the man.

I scored it 95-93 with Stewart as the winner. I also thought Alex Schulz and Lou Savarese won their fights against George, but George was robbed in his last fight against Shannon Briggs.

Stewart was all class at rhe end. I remember that night live, always had respect for him and rooting for him. I wonder why he didnt get a big fight after this performance. His 1st fight with Holyfield was a barn burner.

Stewart was a very good fighter! Perhaps, in our days, he and other heavyweight fighters of the 90s would easily dominate the division.

So let me get this straight alex was able to survive in his fight against GEORGE FOREMAN but got himself killed in the very first round by MIKE TYSON lmao 🤣

George had him ready to go in the second but for some reason eased up and let Stewart back into the fight. It almost looked like Foreman wanted to get some rounds in. Whatever the reason it nearly cost him.

Larry Merchant🤮. I used to turn the sound down whenever he began bloviating, back when I watched these fights live.

A great way to finish your career Alex gave him to much respect he could have done it better to keep your pride not the money

94-93 George Foreman. Foreman generally landed more and threw more and I believe punches (even the jabs) did more damage than anything Stewart threw. Big George was the one always coming forward as well even though he looked exhausted following round 2. I think people are just looking at Foreman’s face when scoring for Stewart. I think Foreman with the two knockdowns earned the W. Commentators need to shut up about him not deserving to be there and needing to retire though. Stewart is a legit contender and Foreman would shut them up winning the title a year later. Can't even watch most fights with the sound on anymore because the commentary is usually so bad and misleading.

@@jasonbantle You're 💯% right! I especially loved Foreman's commentary! I learned so much more about the small subtle parts of Boxing from his commentary than from trainers in the Gym! Finally found a good Gym with old school trainers that know those kinds of things!

Hunter Michael Kelley i have very little training for my one and only mma fight years ago. I’m a wrestler with little else tbh besides what I’ve watched. So that’s badass you have a nice learning system

Deyonce on had 38-39 ko's against mediocre competition and George had almost 30 more ko's than the 🍒 picker.

This was an amazing fight! I remember watching this live as it happened. Great fight by both of them but if you ask me Stewart should've won. I get the two knockdowns in the second but 4 low blows by Forman and the beating he took definitely should've lost him the fight by a point. IMO 🥊

5 low blows lol. He should have been deducted another point. But then the ref helped Stewart by stopping to put his gum shield back in when Foreman had him rocked. He lost his gumshield twice, which could have been intentional attempts to slow down the fight.

Stewart at some point should've retaliated with a Destroyer right hand to George's nutsack. Ridiculous with those low blows. In 45 years of being a boxing fanatic, I've never seen anyone with punches more thudding than Big George's. Like sledgehammers. How the hell Holyfield, at 208lbs, took those shots in unbelievable. One of the greatest lb for lb chins of all times. I remember when Cooper hurt him, Dundee was saying that "Nobody is ever the same after being hit by George" and that he was damaged goods, but that wasn't the case.

At the time, he should have been a mandatory defense for Carlos DeLeon for as many cruiserweights as he destroyed.

WITHOUT THIS FIGHT FOREMAN WOULDN'T HAVE WON THE BELT AGAINST MOORER. HE NEEDED THAT BEATING JUST ONCE IN HIS CAREER TO MOBILIZE HIS LAST POWERS

Yes. He went on to defeat Michael Moorer by knock out in the later rounds after being outboxed again before. In doing so he reclaimed the Heavyweight Championship for the second time in his career as an old man. The commentator *never* supported George’s comeback, and to hear them tell it, every time he struggled it was over.

I had this fight was a draw ! Stewart should have come forward more. Foreman should have been more careful when he threw his right . He was a little too clumsy.
