I waited a long time before I could publish this video that was recorded and edited a year ago. It is, undoubtedly, one of the indisputable masterpieces of the contemporary repertoire for piano. From the first to the last note, nothing is missing, nothing left, the perfection of a master in his maturity. A style carved for years, unmistakable from the first notes.
This is a work commissioned by the pianist Emanuele Arciuli, a set of variations on a classic of jazz (Round Midnight by Thelomius Monk) wrapped in a framework of ironic quotes from well known classics and memories of distant melodies. The suggestive titles of the movements make reference to Shakespeare and to Debussy and one can imagine a magnificent emotional moment just before the return of the main theme, with an intelligent combination of the keyboard and the string of the instrument. A work that will last, with the echoes of the majestic bells in the cadence of the work. What a great homage to one of the masters of jazz piano ...
And what beautiful memories of my work with the great pianist Laura Solano, the first time I worked on these pieces and the moment when she left her shyness aside shouting the twelve midnight bells ...

How Crumb was able to compose such sensitive, heart-wrenching music on a single piano (in fact, this piece has percussion and includes a harp!)! I shudder at the first music and focused on my inner self. It's such a fantastic, dreamy, cold piece, perfect music!

Yes...I truly find a masterpiece in every moment of this piece. The more time passes, the more important and profound his piano music sounds to me. Many thanks for commenting...
Beautiful, creepy, unsettling, sensitive, and exciting- all things a performance of a George Crumb work should be! Well done!

Today I discovered your "Digital Concerthall" subsequent another discovery I made a few days ago: the composer Moritz Eggert. I watched you performing "Jerusalem" from the cycle "Hämmerklavier" It seems that you don't make recordings in collaboration with respectively in dependency on major (or smaller) labels. You are a free artist. Maybe no labels are interested in the music you play. The WWW is full of junk and much worse things but you also can find pearls. In your case it is a celestial bliss to have KZread. What you are doing is an example of a new form of music transmission besides live concerts or sound storage mediums or Streaming. Very, very precious!!! What you offer is a breathtaking repertoire of contemporary piano music in perfect interpretations. I'm deeply impressed.

In fact this was the starting point. It was intended to be a small piece around Monk’s classic. Then it developed to a whole set…
Thanks very much for posting this extraordinary interpretation of Crumbs great piece! He is one of finest poets among contemporary composers and You feel this poetry extremely well. Chain of miniatures which offers you some metaphysical experience. And these combinations of quotes are magical: connection between Debussy, Strauss, Wagner and Gershwin so accurate on so many levels: flow of rich harmonic ideas, presented in a clear way, children's happiness and fun (Debussy-Strauss) immediately transformed to sensuous love theme's (Wagner-Gershwin). Like echoes from wonderland, from deep past... That's really fantastic! Thanks once more!

Dea Ivan. Many thanks for your note. It has been recorded with two Rode K2 mics. They don't appear this time in the recording. I don't remember why we decided that, but they are around two meters from the piano. The hall is huge and very resonant. In short there will come another Crumb piece. Stay tuned...
Your commitment and attention to detail make this a compelling experience, but ... I confess I don't "get" it, especially not the contorted Cake Walk in the middle (Clair de Lune might have made more "sense" in the context ...) ... My failing no doubt. Thanks for all your work on this. Good to have heard it. I feel somehow enlightened ...
@RicardoDescalzo

great to read your message. I hope you find some inspiration in it. Cake walk I suppose comes as a big contrast and as a parody not to have all the material in the same mood
Crumb always found aoutstanding synthesis in quite simple but efcicient tols, sometimes wu=ith stylistic disruptions or u quotations. Here, unusual ways to get piano sounds altrerante with traditional playing, which are seliberately more conventional and couls be heard as an lighly ironic iimitation of romtntic or impressions style, including more modrn stylistic features (minimalism and repetitve music, which must be herd with a rather ironic ear). The composer"s genius (and secret) is to make an homogeneous sore with that quite scsttered material.
