Geopolymer concrete made from waste is the concrete of a sustainable future

Ғылым және технология

The TU Delft team is working on a sustainable type of concrete made from waste products: geopolymer concrete.
Subscribe to our channel here: kzread.info?s...
The production of concrete has a large impact on our environment: it is the second largest producer of CO2, and is responsible for emitting up to 5% of global CO2 emissions, contributing to climate change.
This is not the only problem we're facing in our modern world: the waste production in many other industries is growing, and means our landfills are quickly filling up and valuable resources get lost.
At the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the geopolymer team is researching a type of concrete that uses waste and by products instead of cement as a raw material. This material is called geopolymer concrete, and is made by mixing different industrial byproducts. The hardened concrete has comparable or even better properties than traditional concrete. Already the theory has been put into practice: a geoconcrete canoe has been built, a cantilevered bench, and a bridge is up next.
The role of waste is thus rethought and industrial byproducts can be given a new life, reducing CO2 emissions and making landfills smaller. Geopolymer concrete might just be the building material of the future.

    GP is alumina silicate based concrete, it uses amorphous silica and alumina that can be sourced from fly ash, bauxite residue and ground slags. They are in a reactive state and can be triggered to set with a mixture of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide. (Potassium based also works) See geopolymer.org for more information.

  • @TheAngeloMichael

    @TheAngeloMichael

    3 жыл бұрын

    Rizwan Paramban I am not sure what m sand slurry is, fly ash should by f fly ash, the alumina around 13% or higher and mostly amorphous silica, the Cao content in c fly ash may be too high. It needs some slag (ggbs) you can vary the ratio 50/50 is good but you can use less slag, your sodium silicate will need some sodium hydroxide mixed with it in proper ratios, sodium silicates vary widely.

  • @TheAngeloMichael

    @TheAngeloMichael

    3 жыл бұрын

    Rizwan Paramban the m sand can be used in place of traditional sand and depending on content may add or have different attributes. It’s particle size, shape and mineral content all affect the mix design but gp can still make good concretes out of finer rounded sand particles that aren’t suitable with Portland. If you are in India I can put you in touch with my partner in Channai he can help you.

    now talk about how this material after a few years starts to slowly break down and produce chemical gas that is hazardous to living things, do you want to live in a structure made from waste products and chemicals? learn about what plastics and polymers release when they decay naturally, and how it can cause serious health problems. this is why we are not already living in plastic houses.

    Alkaline activated concrete is prone to leaching if not fully reacted into a geopolymer (3d network material), so there is a possibility that the material researched in the video can't possibly be used to make a bridge with it's salt water environment.

    6500BC - UAE: The earliest recordings of concrete structures date back to 6500BC by the Nabataea traders in regions of Syria and Jordan. They created concrete floors, housing structures, and underground cisterns. But what I want to know is why the color bothers you so much? Not to mention, ancient concrete is very different from modern concrete. When you say white dude claims its discovery, you should at least see if the inventor credits the previous modules. A lot of people bitch about this but don't really understand what it means to claim an invention. For instance, Tomas Edison didn't make the idea of a light bulb; but made the first working module. Thus he gets credit for the creation of the only viable and operable invention. White dudes aren't taking credit for anything, just like Egyptians aren't taking credit from whom ever they learned it from.

    I don't like to be the bringer of bad news but concrete would last between 50 - 100 years, then someday it may be processed into rubble. eventually, particles washed into watersheds and drains. ultimately heading straight out to the ocean, where the real damage is done. the thing is with that is we would never be around to see our children suffer consequences of this technology? the concept is only great when we investigate the entire spectrum of holistic innovation.
