I actually have heard of this country before. Back in 2007, while using the Wii Forecast Channel and listening to the beautiful music, I noticed several points over the Pacific, those being the Oceanic nations, including Vanuatu. I learned the capital was Port Vila there. I went on Wikipedia and looked up more things, like the Oceanic regions and flags. Also, this was on a season of Survivor that I never watched. The Oceanic nations fascinate me because people don't talk about them unless it's about WWII.
Season 9 of Survivor was in Vanuatu and there was an earthquake that season. Very interesting to link that to the Geography. Nice!

Not only have I heard of Vanuatu, my aunt and uncle used to live there. While they were there, there was a massive typhoon (I think in the 80s or 90s) and their house was destroyed around them. They survived by huddling in a small cupboard, which was the only bit of the house left still standing. Very dramatic.
Fun fact: Espirito Santo island once almost became a free country with american backing under the name of Vemerana with a cool blue-green flag that almost led to a small scale civil war...

Including Norfolk Island in Melanesia is a strange one. The island was uninhabited at the time of British settlement but appears to have been inhabited at some point before then by Polynesians. Then there is the Polynesian influence it has now with the Tahitian wives of the Bounty mutineers forming a unique culture.

Awesome Episode! Learned a ton! For me one of the weirdest parts of Vanuatu's history is when American Libertarians tried to help split off some of the country to make a tax haven in the 80's shortly before they got independence. Would have been an odd timeline if they succeeded!

No notable people segment? Was hoping Brian Kaltak would get a mention, Vanuatu’s football team captain who’s doing really well in the A-League
Vanuatu has my second favorite flag.
I'm not sure if anyone is gonna see this but kinda still wanna post it here. It was in 2010 at Shanghai's World Expo. Me, an elementary schooler, and my mom were wandering around at the "Pacific Countries United Pavillion", and we bumped into the Vanuatu section in the very corner. It was a small place with only some pictures of the country and very few visitors, compared to some larger sections with fancy animal specimen. And only two staffs were there, one Vanuatuan and one Chinese assistant. They saw us walking into their section, and passionately handed a bag of gifts to me. I expressed my gratitude, but I didn't stay in that section or even talk to them. However, when I returned home, I discovered with surprise that there were a full set of fish postal stamps, a banner of their national flag, and a little book introducing their country. I felt guilty for not even talking to them, listening to their intro, or maybe just exhibit more curiosity. I started learning by myself more about the country, and have always wanted to visit the country. I just want to let the Vanuatuan girl at Shanghai Expo 2010 know that she has spread very positive image into a Chinese boy's heart, and let anyone from Vanuatu know that you have a friend who's passionate about your country in China. Thank you!
Vanuatu, been waiting for this episode for a long time now. ❤😂 Much love from PNG.
I noticed you didn’t explain the meaning of the flag: Vanuatu means- “our land” in Shefa province language. Red- blood Green- the islands Yellow - Christianity Black- skin color Namele leaf- peace Pigs task- customs & traditions The ‘Y’ shape in the middle of the flag- the shape of the islands

I've been to Vanuatu 🇻🇺. I arrived the day after an eruption and port Villa was covered in black powder! The currency at the time was coloured beads you wore around your neck. I saw most of the island and some neighbouring also.

Very interesting, thanks ! For the friendzone segment, New Caledonia is still a part of France, so techniiically France is the best friend of Vanuatu !
Ok, answering the question about what I know about Vanuatu, before watching the video (and without Googling). It is an island nation in the Western Pacific, south of Solomon Islands and west of Fiji. It is comprised of several volcanic islands, including Espiritu Santu and Tanna. Tanna has an active volcano which is a tourist attraction. The capital city is Port Vila, which is a tourist hub and cruise ships dock there. The people are Melanesian. Not sure of the population, but I would guess less than 100,000. I think it was a French colony at one time. One of the traditional activities of Vanuatu people is jumping from a tower with a rope made of vines attached to their ankles. This was adapted by AJ Hackett, a New Zealander, to become bungie jumping. There is a remote village on Vanuatu where the people worship Prince Phillip (as in Queen Elizabeth's husband) as a god. I think another region of Vanuatu does the same regarding Captain Cook and many of the villagers there name their children "Captain Cook". How did I go?
Love Vanuatu from Malaysia 🇻🇺 ❤ 🇲🇾
In Port Vila, there's also one of the University of South Pacific campuses, an interesting intergovernmental institution.

Praying to the people of Vanuatu right now, 7.3 Magnitude.
I remember first learning of Vanuatu in my anthropology class in college, when my professor showed us pictures of the native Vanatuans with blonde hair, she made it clear to me and my class that "they are not Hispanics".
OMG! I'm getting so excited b/c since I found this site I've been waiting for 3 years for Venezuela and we're on one country away - Vatican City, then Venezuela!
As someone who studies both biology and linguistics, I have made lists of languages in all of Oceania. There are only 125 extant (still living) languages in Vanuatu. As for the species, Vanuatu actually has quite a lot of species entirely endemic to the islands, some of my favorite actually being lichen species. Edit: I should also point out that there is no such thing as that "Vanuatu Iguana". That's a Fiji Iguana that was brought to Vanuatu and they live there now, but Fiji is very adamant on keeping its native iguanas in Fiji.
