Geography Now! Kiribati

Seriously. This was one of the most fun "political geography" sectioned videos I've ever made. I mean seriously The sun rises at the same time on 2 islands yet they are over 26 hours apart.

@@erikwahlstrom976 the story goes like this: the man who translated the bible had a broken 's' key on his typewriter. So because depending on dialect 'tu' can sometimes be said as 'su', he decided that 'ti' could be 'si'. Later, after he received a new typewriter, he changed all word in the bible referring to jesus with a 'ti' ( or tu which can make an s sound too) to be spelled with an 's'. That's why its iesu ( jesus) and not ietu. I hope that made sense! TL;DR a broken s key on a typewriter is responsible.

I’m from a small island just outside of Chuuk lagoon. In my culture, we have a lot of different ainang (clans/family/origins). The name of my ainang is Sopunipi in case anyone wanted to know lol. Anyways, there is an ainang called Tarawa and it comes from Tarawa, Kiribati. I know one of my uncle’s family has its origins in Kiribati. On my island, we have a fish that you catch from the deep parts of the ocean. It’s a very oily fish that will make you poop orange oil if you eat too much lol. Well people from Kiribati (I was told they were exiles) came and taught my people how to catch it. They called it _te ika ni beka_ (the fish of poop) Which is why the name of it in my language is _teikanepek_ .

The prime meridian divides the earth into west and east hemisphere, so any country it passes through will have a portion in each hemisphere, for example England. The equator divides the world into north and south hemisphere, so any country through which the equator passes would have a portion in each hemisphere, for example brazil. This country Kiribati is perhaps the only country on earth through which both the prime meridian and the equator pass through, hence it lies in the north and south hemisphere due to the equator and east and west hemisphere due to the prime meridian. Hence, it lies in all 4 hemispheres.

For those who are interested in Gilbertese (Kiribati/taetae ni Kiribati): /t/ is lenited and assibilated before /i/. So /ti/ is pronounced as [si]. As Barby already said, the name Kiribati comes from Gilberts and since the language lacks a lot of English consonants, they had to substitute some parts to make the name fit the phonological and phonotactical constraints. /g/ > /k/, /ɪ/ > /i/, /l/ > /ɾ/, /b/ > /p/, /ɚ/ > /a/, /ts/ > /s/ and /ɾ/ isn't allowed at the end of a syllable so an /i/ is added (while the /i/ at the end isn't actually pronounced): [gɪlbɚts] becomes [kiɾipas]

Kiribati has possibly the coolest flag in the world. I did a presentation in year 8 SOSE when we investigated the Pacific Islands, and it was amazing the fact that, despite them using the AUD, and us giving them lots of aid, I had never heard of Kiribati. I made sure I learned about it, because it is such a cool country to learn about.

For our (Kiribati flag) it has a meaning. The frigate bird indicates that we are voyagers/travellers and that we are an independent nation. The sun waves/flames are 33 in number ( showing the Number of atolls in Kiribati) and the 3 blue/white waves indicate the 3 main island chains explained in the video. What the color indicates is unknown to me, but some say they used the red blue and white to show respect to Great Britain, and the yellow is just a Kiribati addition.

I love all your videos and this one really caught my interest. I appreciate all the time you and your team put in to doing your research. I was also fascinated with the fact that 9% of the Kilibris population is Mormon. I watched this video twice to make sure I heard correctly. I love the fact that you respect not only other cultures, but religions as well. It’s impressive and I have a new respect for all the countries you have covered so far. Keep up the great work!
