I would call all ex yu countries Balkan countries though, even though Slovenia is nothing like Serbia or Albania for example. Hidden in this funny commentary is a good idea that Zizek would expand upon later: “Balkan-ness” is largely a matter of self-perception. The Balkans is by now basically a shorthand for chaos and dysfunction and no one wants to be characterized by those things. In this video he implicitly points out the absurdity of having a fixed geographical border demarcate such a fluid cultural designation - as if the river in Ljubljana actually splits civilization from barbarism
@user-mb9rh2iz5l

@@treyebillups8602 While you are right that it does, it also links it back to the original comment with how it's a matter of self perception since there are a lot of implications regarding one's view of self dignity and self perception with chaos and exploitation in the balkan modern zeitgeist. He craftily delineates the line between reality and what we commonly accept as reality in cultural perceptions. If anything, it becomes far too easy to defer chaos, dysfunction and instability to one geo-social region on the European continent, and pretend the rest of it is faultless. It's amazing and terrible what centuries of social, economic, cultural and historical clashing can have on a region of people once modern states became a thing and they were forced to try to live with each other.

@@CugnoBrasso Yeah but he's not German so it's no wonder he's mispronouncing it. Mitteleuropa could just be the standard scientific term in the field he's familiar with. It's not as if, for example, Common Law jurists pronounce "Rechtsstaat" correctly, but they do use the word.

I watch this every day for some reason ever since finding this video
"It looks like Paris, green leaves, etc., on both sides, old houses, nothing special..."
I live in the Mittle Europa and my house does not have any Balcony 😢😢
I was initially very confused to see Zizek hosting a travel show, but now I understand. I understand everything.
This is so great
when i'm sad i watch this video and it helps!
it's impressive how his English changed after 15 years. It's completely improved in backward direction, bravo!

@@TheManinBlack9054 > western orientalism I looked for this video to explain western "intellectuals" who believe that Ukraine was tricked into Maidan and NATO application that eastern europeans are people with agency and drive too. Orientalism is not dead.
I had watched this video a couple of years ago and had no clue this dude was famous
Every Zizek clip I watch gets increasingly more deranged and I love it
amazing vibes
KZread suggestions have made quite a different approach and i already like it...
Notice how he looked around to make sure no one can hear him.
I fucking love this guy.
Thanks youtube, now I have another video in my favourites to look at when I'm feeling down
You gotta admit he's a force of nature, whether you approve of his views or not lmao. May he be alive and well and continue to provoke thoughts and entertain!
I love how he's looking left and right before starting to speak as if somebody is chasing him

Balkon.
Every country east and south to Germany say the balkans start east from them.
That’s when his nose hadn’t started to irritate him yet
