This gentle singing warm up is appropriate for those getting an early, gentle start to their singing day. If you've had some time off or have been sick this may also be helpful in getting your voice back in shape. For new vocalists or vocalists new to singing training, the vowel exercises on alignment can be particularly helpful!
Enjoy!

I use this warmup before going on to Jeff's High Note Boot Camp exercises that pertain to transiting the secondo passaggio.
1:18 1:18 Just for my own use cause I’m tired of skipping forward every time I use this. Feel free to it

Made me laugh out loud in the middle of warming up!
I just realized I’m a tenor. These warms up and this tone feels so natural. I have a bad habit of deepening my voice when I sing.

Same here.. this range felt so natural to me even though I thought I was a baritone.. Even the highest notes dont feel like a struggle.. though its just a warmup and not a range excercise..

That’s cus it’s more of a baritone warmup so that way it’s gentle for tenors, but as long as you sound smexy it don’t matter

@@gregpeters592 i hear ya boss but a gentle warmup for tenors would probably be an intermediate warm up for baritones. I sing tenor professionally and these scales are in my mid to low range. Again labels don’t matter as long as you’re singing pretty. I just wanted to offer some clarification to his comment
Great warmup. I do these in the shower to start my morning.

Awesome. I'm glad to hear that this served you well when you needed it! All the best, Jeff
I love to start with a gentle warm up even at this stage in my career, and this is a great way to start. Thank you!
This is my go to warm up right when I wake up. It’s an amazing selection. Thank you!
Thank you Jeff for your exercises, they're doing me good.
Your warm up techniques are very efficient! I use your warm-ups to expand my range as well, and it really works! I used to be kind of locked in those two octaves under the middle C, but now I can reach higher more comfortably. Thank you very much!
Today I had a different feeling. It felt like my mouth was wider. The air came out effortlessly and the voice vibrated deeper. I think I got it. Videos like this have been very helpful to me, not to mention the choir classes in which I participate.
Jeff, I love your vidéos, they help me to feel more easy in my voice, it's hard to make things easier and you succeed to do this, Big greetings from France.🙂
Thanks for helping me alot with your excercises - it's my daily routine

Another great singing warm up Thank you sir
Thank you for a great and helpful video, needed the gentleness in order to get ready for a gig after a recovery period from overstrained vocal chords. Angain, thanks a lot Jeff. I must check out your channel and see if you have any 'get ready for gig with -almost- recovered voice kind of title, it is a situation I think many singers tend to face, even though I normally take descent care of my voice, sometimes I forget in the 'heat of the moment' on stage, and give a bit more out than what is healthy , and hence suffer the consequences later. Sry for the rambling, just grateful for your work. Take care Jeff!
We use this and other of your videos to warm up for all of our shows! Thank you so much for these. ❤

This is off the chain
It's the first time I have seen you use humming. I watch an in depth interview with Frank Sinatra ,he was giving his view on vocal techniques, he was very keen on the uuh turning the uu into an h.I do this a lot and I find the h brings the voice forward and seems too expand the larynx.He also used a lot of humming saying it was the best way too bring the voice into the mask.This interview was along time ago do you think it is still relevant as we now know a lot more about the voice.Not trying too be clever just food for thought.

Hi! Mr.Rolka.
Thank you. What's the range for this warm up?
Im female and honestly don't know what voice type I have; the sound is more soprano, but I don't reach those notes. I warm up with Jeff's tenor exercises because they are comfortable notes to sing. Thank you, Jeff

@@JeffRolkaThank you; I would really like to understand it. I've had such a struggle with my brother because he plays guitar, and he insisted that I sing songs by soprano singers, but there is no way I can sing those notes. So my comfortable notes are in the contralto range, but I don't have that full sound..
Hi Jeff, I was doing the gentle singing warm up - Bass-baritone range for couple months and now I found out that I'm able to do this warm up also (I'm doing it for a week now), and while doing it my voice is often cracking, but I don't feel that much tension (only above C4) and I don't know how to fix this. I think that it might be something with breathing (maybe i'm not doing it properly) or maybe because I'm doing this in the morning. I can do it all with lip rolls with ease (if that information helps somehow). Thanks in advance for any help :D

Hello there! The 'gentle warm ups' adhere to pretty narrow ranges - so no surprise that you can do tenor and baritone. The tension you're feeling above c4 is most likely due to an imbalance in airflow and vocal fold engagement as at that point you're getting into the zona di passaggio. Check out some of the 'how to sing high notes' videos for vowel modification and technical practices in that area! Thank you for watching!! Jeff
Hard coughing (until briefly losing the voice) is not good for singing either, as I found out this winter. And it seems to do most damage to the head voice. This exercise is excellent to recover.

Well said! Thank you for writing that! Thank you for watching and thank you for singing along! Jeff
This is my second video that I incorporate into my warmups. Too many other videos just feel uncomfortable and annoying to the ears. I've got neighbours, which is always worth considering. Everything was great in this video. My only confusion is why you started the example in G - but starting an octave higher to then descend. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be best to do it the other way round on the basis of starting as you mean to go on. As a beginner it feels more natural
@JeffRolka
5 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! I use descending patterns hoping that the vocalist singing it will have reasonably good technique. What this does is allow one to start a phrase in the zona di passaggio avoiding any tendencies to pull up to get there. It then descends from there getting more mellow. It's just about avoiding predispositions - but it's a generlized technical practice so it may not always apply. If you're a beginner, that would indeed be a bit more challenging! Jeff

Jeff, I do this every single morning. It’s fantastic. Thanks so much. Let’s do another session together soon! -Aaron

I just recently started singing on our church's worship team as an alto... But I feel I have a much easier time following these excersises. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

Me too, couldn't it be because we are low altos?
@lalas181

I'm late to this party, but from what I can tell, there's a lot of overlap between tenor and alto ranges. Even if there wasn't, you still wouldn't be doing something wrong. It just means you're an alto with a wider range.
Hello
Jeff, when you are warming up, do you use vibrato?
@JeffRolka
6 жыл бұрын
Great question! I allow my voice to do whatever it will while I'm warming up, so yes, vibrato is present. Thanks! Jeff
i am leggiero tenor with four octaves vocal range F1 - G5 i don't know how to sing even how to practise and sometimes when i try to reach the upper extension i have alot of cracks, but too many people told me that i have an amazing voice what should i do

Welcome! There's lots of overlap in the alto and tenor fachs! Enjoy!
Question. Why do we need to keep our lips GENTLY closed and barely touching each other?
@JeffRolka
3 жыл бұрын
Pressing them too hard engages amounts of musculature that would be disadvantageous when singing lyrics in songs. Best not to get into the habit of it here. Also, pressing them together can change the aural cavity shape for the worse, which we also don't want! Lastly, if you lightly press, that can have the effect of helping lift the soft palate a bit. A good mechanism to learn to control. Great question! Jeff
