This gentle singing warm up is appropriate for those getting an early, gentle start to their singing day. If you've had some time off or have been sick this may also be helpful in getting your voice back in shape. For new vocalists or vocalists new to singing training, the vowel exercises on alignment can be particularly helpful!
Enjoy!

    Jeff thank you for posting these videos. I'm retraining my voice as I have not sang pubically since middle school twenty years ago for a very special project that I'm working on with a group of friends of mine. When I sang twenty years ago I was a mezzo but my voice has changed so I dropped down to an alto. Thank You again for posting these!

    In April 2021 I got COVID really bad and spent 6 weeks in the ICU with a trach in and on a ventilator. Since then I noticed my voice is weaker and I run out of breath faster. Plus after singing just one song my throat will hurt. I think maybe I have scar tissue from where they cut me to put the trach in. I'm not complaining, I was told after they did that I started to improve because then they could clean out my lungs. Then a month later they brought me out of sedation. 2 years later I am strong again except for my voice. It also cracks, btw. I love singing. I love how it feels in my chest. I miss sounding halfway decent, too. Lol

    i’m an alto, but most alto warm up videos are too high for me and don’t cover any of my lower range. it could be partially because my voice is pretty out of shape right now, but i actually had to drop out sometimes near the lower end because it was just vocal fry coming out 😅 i will certainly be using this video whenever i wanna belt out my feelings! haha

    I’ve been doing your warm ups for several months, and may I just say: thank you so much for posting these videos!! They help so much!! However, I do have a question. I have been told doing vocal warm ups quietly are more efficient, is this true?? Thank you so much!!

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    Thanks for watching! I'm glad that they're helping. The short answer is, it depends. Often vocalists that are new to formal training are singing too loud particularly in the lower ranges. Taking the volume down allows for greater disengagement of the chest voice muscles (thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice) and allows for greater flexibility as you enter the zona di passaggio. I hope that helps! Jeff

    Expanding down? If so, you will have to make a transition across the primo passaggio. I have a very special video about that coming out on October 27. Super exciting first time on the channel kind of thing. More of which, I cannot say at this time, but it's going to be exactly on this on really helpful! Super excited. Top secret! Best, Jeff

    Hi Jeff, I'm not sure if I'm an alto or a mezzo. This might be a bit of an odd question but do you intend each of these warm-ups to start in the third octave or the fourth? It looks and sounds like the third to me but I'm not sure... I sang in the soprano line of choirs for years (turns out I should not have, according to my former singing teacher) and was used to soprano warm-ups. Now that I'm in the alto line for the first time, I'm never quite sure in which octave to start my warm-ups. The comfortable part of my range is between E-flat 3 and F 5, although I can go a bit higher and lower. In the past, when taking lessons, I could hit top C#6 but can't right now. Many thanks.
