The subtitles don't appear to be very accurate. I think what was meant was he was giving it to her to repair not to keep. He was unsure if he would be able to afford the repair. As she would have had to purchase the missing parts but in the end it must not have been very expensive as he gave her a couple of geese as well. If he got it all repaired for just the price of two geese then he got a bargain.
