Yep, it's Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, England By The Pound, and Trick Of The Tail, for me.
I was an American soldier in Germany deep in the Bavarian Forest on the Czech border listening to this. I had a room in a house just down the hill from a haunted castle ruins. Right. I was a Western Hemisphere kid getting a dose of the Eastern Hemisphere where legendspace is still a thing.

Their quality didn't diminish only the style changed from prog rock to prog pop and then just pop, it's only when most of the songs on the album started to become just pop that i think the quality dropped. And for me that's at the mama / genesis album, i still like most of those songs and really like home by the sea and mama and illegal alien can be fun too but most of those are just pop. Even on the last true genesis album we can't dance, i can still find a lot of great songs like driving the last spike (which has some of Phil's best drumming, even stated by Chester Thompson that he struggled with the live performance of that one), fading lights which i think has a beautiful message especially if you look at the timeline of the band. The lyrics: Another time it might have been so different Oh, if only we could do it all again But now it's just another fading memory Out of focus, though the out line still remains And from there you have: no son of mine, dreaming while you sleep and i can't dance which i still enjoy but aren't on the same level as the previous 2. But then you have the rest of the album which for the most part still isn't that bad for pop songs but it just doesn't do it for me, it lacks everything that genesis stood for. The only odd one out being Jesus he knows me which can be fun at times but still has the rather bland pop theme going on. The problem i see with Genesis in the later years isn't that they went pop just that the creative songs and experimentation became less and less over the years until the albums had 60% to 70% bland pop songs. Which at that point doesn't feel like Genesis anymore but like a bad Phil Collins album. That being said this band will always be one of my favorite bands of all time.

If you like the pastoral sound of this great album, I strongly recommend The Geese and The Ghost, by Anthony Phillips (1977). It is exactly where Trespass' style would have been developed from 1971 on, if Phillips did not stop music production.
Thin hung the web like a trap in a cage, The fox lay asleep in his lair Fang's frantic paws told the tale of his sin. Far off the chase shrieked revenge. Outcast he trespassed where no wolf may tread, The last sacred haunt of the dead. He learnt of the truth which only one wolf may know, The sceptre and crown of the king. Howling for blood, One-eye leads on the pack, Plunging through forests and snow-storm. Steep rose the ridge, ghostly peaks climbed the sky, Fang sped through the jungles of ice. Hard on his tale, One-eye drew from the pack An old hero conquered by none. Steep, for too steep grew the pathway ahead Descent was the only escape A wolf never flees in the face of his foe Fang knew the price he would pay One-eye stood before him With the crown upon his head Sceptre raised to deal the deadly blow. Fang, son of great Fang, the Traitor we seek, The laws of the Brethren say this That only the King sees the Crown of the Gods And he, the Usurper must die Snarling he tore at the throat of his foe But Fang fought the hero in vain Dawn saw the white mountain tinted with red Never would the crown leave again One-eye hid the crown and with laurels on his head Returned amongst the tribe and dwelt in peace.
Don’t know why I’m so apprehensive to listen to new music, despite knowing I’d like it.

A beautiful piece, from a splendid album. Anthony Phillips, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel and the late John Mayhew (not credited for the music, unlike the others) had created something unique, very special, that wasn't just inspired by King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King - even it is told that the album ignited the spark for Tony Banks & co... This one had more folk elements than most of the rest, merged with classical leanings in the ending section. I call it genius.
Please Genesis, do a 50th anniversary edition of 'Trespass'. There's a lot of material that hasn't been released (like Roundhouse 1970 audio and video), and the original mixes have never been issued on hi res. The 1994 remaster was the last time the original mixes were available on CD, and they're drenched in no-noise. Also, the 1970 BBC sessions (incl 'Jackson Tapes') could be included, with better transfers. New 2020 stereo and 5.1 mixes would be great. It's now or never. There won't be another 50th anniversary. Of course, none of us will be here for a 100th anniversary!

Didn't listen to this for so many years. Didn't remember how good it is.
When I was a 10 year old kid in 1971 in Texas I used to fall asleep at night listening to this from 8 trac on a big wooden speaker cabinet next to my headboard. My brother saw it at the record store and said "what the heck is a Genesis?" and brought it home. He asked me what I thought and I told him if the guy wants a drink, why doesn't he just get a drink? and then we listened to Trespass a few thousand more times none the wiser.

Lucky you... I was 13 in 1979 and I probably knew the band's name but I had to wait until 1981, and a very good in-depth article in an old rock mag from 1976 to really try to buy an album, and I choose to buy "Selling England By The Pound". Things were never quite the same after that ! Fortunately, I got to know "the old Genesis" a few months before the release of Abacab... Otherwise, I might have never listened to Genesis...
