"Stagnation" To Thomas S. Eiselberg, a very rich man, who was wise enough to spend all his fortunes in burying himself many miles beneath the ground. As the only surviving member of the human race, he inherited the whole world. Here today the red sky tells his tale, but the only listening eyes are mine There is peace amongst the hills, and the night will cover all my pride. Blest are they who smile from bodies free, seems to me like any other crowd who are waiting to be saved. Wait, there still is time for washing in the pool, wash away the past. Moon, my long-lost friend is smiling from above, smiling at my tears. Come we'll walk the path to take us to my home, keep outside the night. The ice-cold knife has come to decorate the dead, somehow. And each will find a home, And there will still be time, for loving my friend - You are there - And will I wait forever, beside the silent mirror And fish for bitter minnows amongst the weeds and slimy water. I, I...said I want to sit down I, I...said I want to sit down. I want a drink - I want a drink, To take all the dust and the dirt from my throat, I want a drink - I want a drink, To wash out the filth that is deep in my gut, I want a drink. THEN LET US DRINK - THEN LET US SMILE - THEN LET US GO.

I've recently come to have a theory on the meaning of this song... After a nuclear fallout, and in return, the end of civilization, a lone man sits at a single pond. He fishes day in and day out, and is quite complacent with his simple life. But, he must be weary when the night falls; a large, heaven-sent knife comes every night to decorate the ones who've died years past around this area. Eventually, this man gets a sign from the red sky's sun that there are others in the world. To him, this was unheard of. His entire life was solitude amongst the weeds and slimy waters of the pond, yet he heads for this sign of life away from his home. On his long journey, he comes to see many strange and mysterious landmarks scattered about the land... and with that, he meets a friend. This new friends accompanies our man on his journey and takes him back to his home to rest. While here, our man reminisces about his old life and what he always had done at the pond. They wash up and sleep for the night, then head out for the rest of the long journey ahead. After weeks of travelling, the pair can see dwellings in the distance; their only obstacle is making it across the dried deserts of the forgotten and over the hills. Soon, after some desperation and a long sprint towards the dwellings, the pair finally find the other people still alive. The townspeople rejoice, and so do our pair.

In the booklet, the song is introduced with this short text: _"To Thomas S. Eiselberg, a very rich man, who was wise_ _Enough to spend all his fortunes in burying himself_ _Many miles beneath the ground, as the only surviving_ _Member of the human race, he inherited the whole world."_ I've always read it as him being the last human alive, and his only friend is the moon who follows him around wherever he goes (which only seems to be back-and-forth between his home and the lake). He envies the dead, but still he goes on with the same routine day in and day out.

This is the song they could play live. It gets something about Phil Collins, and I know he wasn’t part of the band during the song recording time. But still gets something about him or his arrangement. I don’t know! During the performance of I know what I like (at the end), He always bring some Stagnation Chorus and the audience goes crazy. And he loves it!

I think they did a live version of this song on the BBC back in '71 or '72. It's somewhere on this website, but it has Phil at drums and Steve at guitar. They do a fantastic job at keeping the sound of the original while introducing some of their own style to the song. Such a brilliant song, I really wish they made it a staple of the songs they would play live.

Time is ticking out. 23 October 1970. 50th anniversary of 'Trespass'. Really hope we'll get a well-deserved and long overdue anniversary release. Last time we had the original mixes was 25 years ago (!), the 1994 remasters, drenched in no-noise. Never released in Hi Res. The 2007 remixes could be improved a lot, keeping the original dynamic range, and there's a lot of material that could be included as well: BBC Sessions, Jackson Tapes, Demos, instrumental mixes (a la Steven Wilson), and for the very first time, Roundhouse 1970 on audio and video. The only document of Genesis with Anthony Phillips. You know all of us we'd buy that in a heartbeat. Thank you!
