Ordinarily I try to support the officials when there’s a chance of being correct or classy, as I’ve umpired myself. The horrific plate accuracy we’ve seen is jarring. Not borderline. Way off. It reminds me of the Jim Joyce perfect game debacle. That openly awful call had me wondering. Did Jim get some extra MLB money to blow a major call at the next opportunity? They negotiate with the union and major improvements are often refused until something so horrible happens the league gets what it wanted. Replay didn’t exist before that horrible call at first, MLB wanted it for years. MLB has wanted computer assisted/robotic umpiring for years. Are these guys getting paid off to blow calls? It just makes no sense. They’re not usually THIS bad behind the plate.
