For not running absolutely PERFECT... check the spring around the link your flathead is under in 11:30. That's what was wrong on my woodchipper and what I think is wrong with my 5000W Generac that's stuttering. I replaced it on my woodchipper it took care of the surging problem (particularly the oscillating kind that's really annoying). It appears to smooth the motion of the throttle keeping it from "feedback looping" up and down

Is there a replacement carb for these engines that are more along the lines of a Honda or champion engine. I have a Hobart welder with a Briggs like this and have lots of problems with this type of carb.

Thanks for the information. I have a 5k powermate and the voltage was too high (134v) by using the spring and bending the tab slightly I was able to adjust the voltage to 120v no load and 110v under load. The voltage is more important to the safe operation of appliances, especially motors.

Jo No I agree motors are sensitive to that. Note, that generator in the video has an AVR so voltage should be pretty consistent at any engine speed near 3600 rpm. Hertz though are directly tied to the engine speed. With no load make sure the hertz are around 61. It will drop with load. If the voltage is off at 61 hertz use the adjustment screw on the AVR. Clockwise to increase and counter clockwise to decrease. If no AVR on you generator then you can use voltage as a measure to set the engine speed. Generally with no avr you have to set a little high between 125-127 volts as the voltage will drop under load.

Outstanding Video, James. Lost power 7pm last night. 10pm no start on the Briggs, so 6am carb overhaul. Still surging after a cleaning. Wish I found your video last night. Would have made it much easier. My gasket expanded, and didn't fit back in the groove very well - opposite your shrinking gasket problem!! You didn't think the carb cleaning was going to fix the sputter / surge issue. What would you look at next? Spark plug? I don't see any mixture adjust on the Nikki carb. I plan on overhauling with a new air filter, carb, and spark plug after power turns back on. Good tip on the frequency "adjustment"

Hello Sir, I carefully listened to your generator at the start of the video. We have similar sounds where there is alternating "bong...bong..." and the governor's control is moving crazy. My generator is very new and once a month I turned it on without load but recently I was away at home for almost 2 months. Before I went away someone used the gen and forgot to switch off the choke. All searches I did here on youtube, yours is best demonstrated and similar to mine. My question is do I have to perform maintenance similar to yours?

If the governor are is moving a lot and the engine is hunting or surging, then the carburetor probably does need to be cleaned and/or there could be water in the system.

@@jcondon1 Thank you! It's hard to know if the engine is hunting/surging, currently. Don't have proper tools to gauge if it's properly giving the correct output. Cleaning the carburetor would be my best first action to take. Now I have to know how to dismantle this thing. Apparently no experience. Any tips to not blow up this engine? hahaha

Ideally yes the Hertz should stay the same, but unfortunately generators aren’t capable of remaining constant. Some are better than others but all have some fluctuation.

Thanks for the video. I just tonight completed my Natural Gas conversion on my Coleman generator which uses the same Briggs & Stratton as yours. Working great but noticed the HZ dropped to 58 59 no load. I'm assuming it's because the governor was set for gasoline which produces more BTUs so I think your video will solve my low HZ problem. I sued the US Carb. kit. The Snorkel kit.

Ed Fletcher take note, when you remove the top cover to gain access to the governor spring and tab there is a metal plate that the rear two cover nuts were holding in place. You should replace the nuts before starting so the metal plate does not jump out of there. I learned the hard way once when it came out and got caught between the engine and stator. Took a while to get it out. Changing fuel types should not impact the engine speed with a mechanical governor. Its common for governor spring to to lose some of its spring over time and require small adjustments.

I have a similar engine that has high voltage(138) and good frequency(60) under no load with no AVR. Is there any way to reduce the voltage without hurting the hertz?

  • @jcondon1

    @jcondon1

    3 жыл бұрын

That is about 10 volts too high. I am sure it can be done, but not with the regulator that is built into that machine. Most things in your house can handle 138 without issue. Actually most can handle 240 without issue. The stuff that cannot handle it are things with electric motors, the AC, refrigerator etc. But those also put a load on the generator and the voltage will come down some.

  • @jcondon1

@@johnwehner5684 most important to an electric motor is the hertz. Between 58-62 should be fine. Even at 138 volts, would think that would come right down in the 120 volt range when the fridge turns on. The generator I tested today runs at 133 volts no load 61.5 hertz. Came down to 118 volt under half load. That is normal for a generator without an AVR.

Here is a reminder about portable generator safety: this is only a reminder for anyone who use portable gas/propane generators. This is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generator during a power outage. Everyone has to see this safety reminder. Every year after hurricane and winter storms, there were reports on the news that many people have died each year when using generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution during a power outage. There were reports about deaths when using generators when the power was out. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Here’s an advice about generator safety: please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not permit a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps and everyone understands the safety requirements. Thank you. Be safe.

Varying engine acceleration does not impact generator frequency. So it is so that at the beginning and the end you get the same frequency. Rather it could impact the voltage.

NO NEED to Bend anything, you can accomplish the same thing by using the way the factory designed, to adjust the RPM's by moving the right side of the Spring to a hole further toward to you to give you more RPM's and Back away from you to give you less RPM's Note: there are 2 rows of holes the ones on the left side are numbers and the back row are Letters, On my Generator I simply moved the spring back from a numbered hole to a lettered hole and reduced the RPM slightly and dropped my voltage down from 121Volts to 117Volts and ran between 59 and 61HZ depending on Loading. I moved the spring back 1 number and it dropped the voltage to far.

Those holes also adjust the sensitivity of the governor and will change the way it responds to a load.
