What an incredible job you've done on this one! I would have never believed you could bring it back to life once seeing the shape the compressor was in. The longevity of the Monitor Tops is a testament of GE's great engineering of the time. They were truly built to last. Thanks so much for taking the time to do these videos as they are interesting and educational to see.

It is amazing how efficient these designs were! We need to get back to simpler things! That refrigerator is truly a marvel in design and energy efficiency! As were so many in the past! We have lost something over the years!

Thanks for documenting this rebuild. I've see those ball tops... always wondered what was inside and how it worked. I had guessed they flowed oil on the inside of the ball to cool it :)

As Technical support for a heavy machinery manufacturer (in no way related to refrigeration) I enjoy watching your process from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing

Just finished watching the whole series - amazing 100 year old design - also amazing you got it going with all the corrosion. You did mention that its unlikely a leak would have let water in to cause the corrosion or the refrigerant would have have been lost. I wonder if it was contaminated at some point perhaps when someone tried to top up the refrigerant thinking that was the cause of a problem when the actual issue was the motor beginning to fail? All of that corroded metal seems to look like moisture did get in somehow to mix with the SO2. The forced oil cooling is something - makes sense given the reduced pressure in the compressor chamber. You indicated the compressor was barely warm after running a while - shows how well that system worked.

Excellent work on the vintage GE fridge. That would definitely be a better idea to fix old appliances than waste money on a new appliance from Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy or even Sam's that may eventually break in a couple of years. The new GE fridges that people buy today are pure garbage and always ends up in landfills after couple of years or less of use. That's back in the time when GE used to bring good things to life. Even the Smart refrigerators today made by LG, Samsung, Bosch, Whirlpool, modern GE will not last you as long as the old ones did. I wish every appliance was made to last like this today,

Again, you are 100% on the point with the comments about the new fridges. All they do is make money for the manufacturer and cost money to the consumer. They hide the whole story and claim cost savings on energy without disclosing the recurring replacement cost; in money and resources.

That’s a cool machine. I’m going to downsize to one like this when I retire. No need for a big GE LH-12 when the kids are gone.

Hi I really enjoy watching your videos and seeing these old machines running after all this time, I am wondering if you work un units for the public, I have a 1935 CK-2-B16 that has a damaged control unit. I'm not sure if you are able to repair them or how to get parts for it, thank you.

Thanks for the comment. I do repair controls for these, assuming that the worn original parts are still present. Feel free to e-mail me. There is a link on my channel page for e-mail. You will have to click on the About tab to locate it. If you can't find it, please let me know in a comment.

Thank you for the reply, the control itself is in decent shape but missing the on/off knob and the thermostat bellows was removed by previous owner without being chilled and I assume is likely damaged. I looked but was unable to find the about tab on the channel for some reason

Awesome series Dave, thanks for the content. How does the refrigeration machine attach do the cabinet? Does it simply just sit on top or is there mounting bolts that are hidden by a cover plate?

So was the ball area around the compressor because of the cooling method that you mentioned or was it just for looks? I mean it does look like a nuclear reactor in the comic books but it was designed before that was even a thing.

Friend, what can i use to repack my hermetic service tool valve stem ??? What I pulled I out looked like a packing gone bad... I ended up coating a graphite rope with copper infused ant-isieze. It seems to have a made a very good seal. It seems to move well. Now if I can only see how to get to the service port on my CA-B16....
