Gene Hoglan (Testament, Dark Angel) - drumtalk [episode 60]

Here it is: drumtalk's provisional final episode no 60 -- and it is no other than Mr. Gene Hoglan to be featured on this one and what can I say? It was a real pleasure to have one of my favourite guests on the show again. This was shot in February 2020 only a few days before the whole world went into a shutdown. We basically picked up where we left off the last time. Plenty of great stories and inspirations in this one for sure. As always: ENJOY!!!

@@polestebansanchez1362 hahahahahahahahah. Ok, first off Im going to let you know Im a mix and mastering engineer, and Im also a drummer. I have been for over 20 years. It seems you dont know what triggers are. People who dont play drums (which its obvious you dont) , think triggers make you play faster or better. Thats not what trigger does. A trigger is a sensor that goes on the head of the drum. When the drum is hit ONCE it "triggers" a pre recorded drum sound ONCE. A lot of times these are used in live situations because micing a drum has whats called "bleed". The sound of the the drums will bleed into the mics of the other drums. Drums are notoriuosly hard to get a good mix on in soke venues. So they use a pre recordr drum sound. Its a sample of an actual drum recorded in a studio. It simply sounds better. It does not make you play faster or better. The sample plays one note per one note hit on the drum. Are you following what Im saying? He is still playing all that. Its not doubling the hits or making it sound faster., Lots of people think this for some reason. And what do you mean by "post production"? Explain what you mean, because I have a feeling you dont know what that is either., I have sat in on Infant annihlators recording sessions. My buddy mixed two of their albums. Aaron is playing every single note. And his playing skill is a bit better than Gene's. Aaron can play stuff Gene cannot. Im sorry to tell you. I love Gene, dont get me wrong. But you are incorrect on this one. watch > kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2Wg1qx6lLSue8Y.html and aaron playing here.. You can see exactly what he is playing > kzread.info/dash/bejne/hX2hqstqZsbdocY.html

@@johnwalter6410 lmao. its programmed - computer drums, not triggered. He didn't play c**tcrusher. That is the reason they dont play that shit live and the playthrough is just the album audio. Obvious from his technique that he cant play at those speeds for long, if at all. Meshuggah programs drums too but at least their fans know about it and the drummer can play it live.

I remember at the end of the show, people come up asking me how and why was I playing the whole show with my eyes closed. Some guys that it was just me doing a show, but it really boiled down to muscle memory and playing everything in my head...
