All of genes work on those strapping records is the best parts of metal. The meeting of a guy who really understands drums and how they should fit in a song (devy) and a guy who can play anything and knows how to make extreme metal drumming dynamic (gene) has never been topped in metal imo. It was close when devy worked with dirk verbeuren on deconstruction, but dirks signature style comes out of that a lot where’s Gene just integrates perfectly with Devin. I want them to work together again really bad.

In my humble opinion the topic of Fear Factory is a mess and even more controversial and divisive than for example Sepultura or Pantera or other bands you could name. As a young death metal drummer Raymond Herrera was one of my favourites and his drumming was such an pioneering integral iconic part of the Fear Factory sound, that could only later could be replicated by others. While Hoglan is probably the most legendary and greatest metal drummer ever and Mechanise is a good album with Hoglan being there personally it felt like something was missing and FF were jumping on the Hoglan bandwagon. Damn shame.

Met him briefly at a Testament show in 2012 and had just enough time to tell him how influential he was for me and talk a bit about Dethklok. I realized that him and I both come from a similar background, ambidextrous playing, leading double kick patterns with the left foot and being self taught learning everything by ear / air drumming. Everything he does is the definition serving the song and I owe my ability to play tastefully to him. Such an amazing dude and I'm glad to see him looking so good and healthy now.

Seriously, Gene was who I always wanted to be as a drummer growing up. I never wanted to be famous. Outside of the percussion and the speed/thrash/death metal world, not many people know the name Gene Hoglan, but in the industry he is a legend and is one of the most respected studio percussionists of all time. That was what I wanted, not to be famous, but to be a respected studio guy. Obviously my dream never panned out. I ended up joining the Navy pretty much just so I could survive and ended up doing 20 years. I never stopped playing, but it was just hobby I love and no longer a career goal. I have loved Gene since the 80's, but the joy I felt when Metalocolypse/Dethklok came out and I found that Brendan and Gene were the main song writers was huge (were the fuck is season 4 already)!

As a drummer myself, Gene has been my absolute favorite every since Individual Thought Patterns came out. The way he incorporated the bells and splash's into his drum rolls just blew me away! I have followed his career pretty close every since. This video is a great piece of metal history. The guy is so personable! Thanks for this upload!

Chuck used tapes... I still do. Even for album recordings, sometimes, running things through an old tape deck, really ads that old school sound... Band mates though, thinks i'm mad when i bring my guitar riff tapes ;)

This is GREAT!!! I’m really enjoying listening to Gene discuss the DNA of all these albums/bands, etc. Mr. Hoglan is a highly intelligent, articulate person who seems to be well-read and self-educated in “everything Music.” Thanks for doing this interview and giving it away to us for free!!!

Cool interview. I never knew much about Gene growing up because I didn't know about his early bands until I got older. Easily one of the best drummers in the top tier of talent. He seems like a chill and humble guy. Strapping Young Lad was first time I heard him back in 2005. He's killer!

I'm finding it hard to square this soft-spoken, erudite and thoroughly personable guy with the Gene I first clapped eyes on on the back cover of Leave Scars in 1989. To be fair, most of the band members looked pretty intimidating but I particularly remember thinking, of Gene, that I wouldn't have wanted to meet him down a dark alley! Couldn't have been more wrong in that assessment. What an an absolute gentleman and master of his craft he is. Just a top bloke. Thank you for this interview; the 45 minutes felt more like 5 in his company.

Speaking of, if you haven't heard the Mechanism album Horrific Inspired with him drumming, check it out!! Hall of the Gods especially; the drumming, riffing and vocals are off the hook \m/
