Fun fact : When he says he had a job in the 80's hes talking about working for slayer as a roadie. ( lights tech something ). :) Back when slayer recorded Haunting the chapel, The studio did not have any carpetting in to so Dave lombardo's kit would eventually start to move as the kicks start going so Gene hoglan had to be there to hold Lombardo's drumkit together. The very first double bass kit that Gene played was Lombardo's :D

+Sgt.James Doakes Lovely guy, Gene. I met him outside City Gardens in Trenton NJ when he was with Dark Angel. This must have been around 1988. I was a sophomore in High School. Very accessible. Came off as a nice goofy type of dude. Glad to see he's doing well. He is pulled a Neil Peart and wrote lyrics for Darkness Descends.

That sounds doubtful that he was talking about that because he said 9 to 5 job, slayer would def need him rougher hours than that. Unless he meant 9pm to 5am haha

One of the reasons Gene is so good is because he loves all music and brings those other styles into his metal drumming. The best way to sound generic is to only listen to the kind of music you play.

To this day, his drumming on Death's Symbolic is, to me, the best drumming ever recorded in metal. The last Testament record is pretty awesome, but Symbolic is on another level completely. Such an amazing, humble, down-to-earth musician. A true gentle giant.

I had one 9 to 5 job....what a ‘blessed’ guy, both in personality, talent and creativity. At my 38y I really enjoy metal-minded music again. As a drummer, I listened and listen to several styles. Went through a dpressive period, working (Too) much and therefore lost Some of my interest, creativity and skills in drumming. Still a struggle, but the postive mental attitude of guys like Gene Hoglan do me Well. Dressed in a suit when going to the Office, I need to listen Some metal on the cd player in my old but beloved Saab :). Keep up Gene and the overall metal community!
