When I got my first cheap tablet in July 2022, new cheap phone in October 2022, I noticed that TikTok was pre- downloaded on the device s made in China. I immediately uninstalled it, it was still there, I had to tried a few more times to finally got rid of TikTok. I never have any desire to look at it, zero curiosity! I don't have FB, Tweeter while I was teaching in China from 2009-2013 because it was blocked there. After I return to CA, I still don't have the need to get on social media. Everyone asked for my WhatsApp number, I still told them I don't have it. The only apps for me is Instagram and KZread for my own travel journey. The trick to not let social media dictate our life are Follow people, topics which are meaningful for you, the less the better. I follow a few close friends and mostly brands, companies for work inspiration. I don't need to know who eats or drink what. Turn off KZread Auto play function, it will save your life when I click don't recommend, or not interested+ the dislike button, I don't see the algorithm recommends the topics anymore.

There are some benefits, but the consequences completely outweigh the benefits of social media. It is destroying society. It the worlds achilles’ heel. It’s bad for mental health, and brain development in kids. I can honestly say, the world would have been a much nicer place if social media never existed. And that is a hill I’m willing to die on.

As a 90s kid, I grew up without social media. I couldn't imagine the trauma I would have experienced having access to social media as a young child. My first introduction to social media was Myspace during my sophomore year. By then, my friend groups were well established. I can't imagine the trauma I would have gone through had we been on social media throughout our school years. It was hard enough navigating through the awkwardness of puberty and many, many embarrassing moments that could have been recorded and posted for all to see.

I'm older so I remember home phones, answering machines & NO cell phones! It was more peaceful. You returned people's calls after hours/same with family. If you were out of the house, you were out!!! I'm currently 50 years old and believe me I never liked those "Clam Shell" phones, I have always been a fan of the "bar" type. But if the issue of the mental health of today's young people is so serious because they have an iPhone or Android and then they decide to take this type of Clam Shell phones as an alternative, bravo to them. Btw I like the current phones but I always got control over social networks and WhatsApp I only use it for urgent and precise things, like calls, short but substantial, Facebook very little and I rarely go there, Instagram right now I try to spend a lot of time, that social network is absorbing and if I'm on the street, believe me, I don't use the phone only when I'm inside a closed area, which can be a house or a store and/or perhaps a mall, because thieves are lurking. IMHO!

Zoomer reporting in. Don't think I would ever do this. I'm not on social media, but I need my phone to rideshare, navigate, listen to music, use as an eReader, and Google pressing questions/topics that come up in my daily life. Most of those use cases could be replaced by separate devices, like a GPS, iPod, etc., but that would be inefficient and wasteful. You don't need to switch to a flip phone to practice digital minimalism. I know it's hard to just quit social media apps cold turkey, but there's many intermediate steps you can take before resorting to a flip phone so that you don't lose the actually beneficial aspects of owning a smartphone. For example, using black and white filters and setting timers can be helpful in reducing your social media consumption.

It’s nice to see. I feel like the newer phone companies have become Predatory and could give less about your mental health sadly.

Right, I just deactivate my social medias so I don't get distracted with messages and notifs. Glad these Gen Z are taking actions to their health. When I started doing it 4 years ago, it's elevating to my mood. Having no social media gives you more priorities.

I miss my phone that slid up to reveal a full keyboard. Damn, that thing was so satisfying.

This is what my mom was on awhile and she a boomer. She was basically forced to use smart phones as they phased out flip phones. Now she uses smart phones and now this comes out 😅

I did that few years ago for two months. It was incredible!! I really cleansed myself and gained a new perspective on social media - i realised its mostly self promotion and that's ok. Now I understand and don't mind it. It doesnt touch me on a personal level (I think).! For years I was ok with being away from my smartphone and not using it. Now I need another cleanse maybe. This video got me thinking. Due to some circumstances i got a little bit addicted again on the phone but for videos, duolingo (😄), news and some ok reels. I should go dumb (phone) again ! You try it too!

I'm a Gen X. Never embraced social media nor do I Tweet. Not a Luddite, but always looked at the web as utilitarian. DIY videos, research, and general entertainment. Like right now watching this video on the front screen of my Razr 5g👍Life is about balance. When friends or family reach out it's mainly by phone. It's more enjoyable and less chance of misunderstanding a DM 🤔

I loved my Razor. Miss it. So glad I didn’t grow up with this toxic culture of smart phones. But reverting back to a flip phone indicates weakness. All you have to do is delete all your twitter, instagram, facebook, tik tok and other lame social media accounts. The only thing I have is KZread and use it for news for an hour here and there when I want more information on something. Not sure why its so hard to do this.

My first phone was the Motorola RAZR in 2005 or 2006, I believe. lol I remember how excited I was, even though I was a very young adult by that point.

I recommend the jelly 2. It is a tiny smartphone. It keeps you off your phone because it's not as satisfying but if you needed to use an app you still can. You could swap back and forth between your regular phone if you use a sim card. The reason it's better than a flip phone for me is because i use music streaming, driving apps, use coupons at stores, gas price apps, etc. So there are good things about carrying a smart phone.

I’ll pass. Sounds like more of a social media addiction. I’ve been using computers and the internet since the windows 95 era, a portable computer was a dream for me. A smart phone is a tool, use it to your advantage.

Same here. I have a smartphone but I only use it for texting and calls. I have a notebook that I use for most other things and an HP touchscreen that I use for photos and videos. People should use their electronics like they do their kitchen appliances. Each has its own purpose. No more, no less. I don't try to freeze food in the microwave or wash dishes in the fridge. People really need to learn self-control.
