    If there was a middle finger emoji I would use that instead. I also get criticized for using punctuation.

    They think you're being sarcastic. Like a dismissive eye roll. "Thumbs up, sure I agree with you ... NOT!" Best I can figure. Nobody from that generation can give a coherent explanation for why.

    You can put your thumb up? I thought the middle finger was the one you weren't supposed to put up. Gonna guess the peace sign, A-Okay and the pinky and thumb back and forth, "Say na, bra' are a no go too.

    How the hell did the thumbs-up ever become a Bad Thing? Hell if the like button on Facebook. It's going to sign of agreement and positivity for ages. How the fuck did it get twisted to something negative?

  • @brmbkl

    Projection. Gen Xers care mostly about their individual emotions, not those of their fellow Z-ers. So when another person texts an emoji instead of a non-committing but sincere sounding, commonplace, vague but acceptable statement, they feel disrespected. It’s pc culture on steroids: the rules and demands of what is acceptable are astronomic. Gen x were straight-forward - we didn’t feel the need to hurt your feelings, but we sure didn’t feel like we had to entertain your insecurities. Yes, no, go-ahead, wouldn’t do that if I were you. Guess how well that sits with todays youth.

  • @brmbkl

    @brmbkl

    Left out my point, rough week. The projection part is: they know they don’t care, even though they try really hard to care (about everything: acceptance of every kind of disability, identity, gender, the environment, the economy, women’s rights, trans rights, …) Drinking water and using nail polish involves tough choices for them. But caring about everything is impossible. So while there’s a dystopian mandate to care about everything, deep down they know they don’t. So when someone gives a short answer to acknowledge, without praise, without an explicit endorsement of your idea or choice, we see it as an answer, no more no less. They see it as a passive aggressive dismissal. You can’t just say yes or no. Because in their world, that just ain’t done. You have to agree, fully, even if you don’t.

    Why can't people use emojis differently? My parents use the thumbs. It's literally a thumbs up. We're not all your shitty ex, doing it passive aggressively. We're adults? I think we have the capacity to know a thumb can mean multiple different things.

    I'm a goofy person; if I want to use emoji's; I will use them. The thumbs up can be anywhere from a quick I got it; to a I'm rolling my eyes at you because i understand you are being being emotionally triggered. They could make an emoji dictionary; so people could know all the possible ways to use an emoji. So we know all the ways to either offend or not offend.

    Whoa, whoawhoawhoa whoa whoa whoa whooooooa... You state, "...because it's hurtful to YOU...its not the middle finger emoji..." _I'M SORRY BUT WHAAAAT??!!?!_ well, im sorry that the middle finger emoji is upsetting to YOU, but im gonna keep using it because it means i love you to me and mine. HYPOCRISY THY NAME IS 👍 Now, should everyone become too sensitive and become silent so as not to offend anybody, NO. A big no. But should, if you are confronted with the effects of your actions, you be conscious and kind enough to be willing to make minor compromises and adjustments to your behavior, YES. A big yes. If someone in your chat is offended by something you sent AND they inform you they find it offensive, a kind person would do their best to no longer send them that. Both extreme positions are terrible: everything being off-limits due to offense but also NO LIMITS. Would it be okay if i went around giving babies and 90+ yr olds the middle finger? No, because I KNOW what they think it means, even though to ME, it means i see you, i love you, and ya ugly too (jk). Just know to whom it may concern and be kind and censor yourself just like you would with "naughty words."
