I keep thinking maybe military service should be mandatory for such a high office...but then again who wants would-be politicians joining the military? Personality tests and psych evals, though, maybe we should look into that...

If you defend the Constitution then why is it not being protected from all the people walking all over our Constitution right now. Congress is not following the Constitution?? I see no defending the Constitution right now.

I wish my father and grandfather was alive they would die to protect our constitution and our people as they did in WW2

@Greg Gilly WTF makes you think I am politicizing this? I know exactly what the oath is and what it means. I'm also pretty sure that the General is making reference exactly the same way that I am thinking. Based on this section of the oath... "and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." Stating that I will obey the orders of the president...which I would not support if those orders are against the constitution. I would gladly go to prison before I followed anything I was ordered to do if it did not follow what the constitution says. I'm not sure how you think that is politicizing anything.

According to that new book this guy expects his subordinates to take an oath to him, not the president or the constitution. Will be interesting to see how much of that reporting was true, if any.

My brother used to say this all the time, I took an oath to the constitution and not to the president of the US!

America is a tyranny. It's heavily militarist, despite what this general says, and it's overwhelmingly clear that military-industrial complex drives foreign policy as a profit-making exercise, unseating democratically elected leaders across the Global South. Elections at home largely depend on which country receives the most donations, and donations heavily from Wall Street. Trump's overwhelming support by white Americans and evangelicals also shows that all a politician really has to do is appeal to white supremacy to win the unwavering support of a large part of the population. Black people, Latino, and Native Americans won the election for Biden, and they will continue to face violence, displacement, and exclusion long after Biden's sworn in. Don't get me wrong-- I'm glad Trump's on his way out and it's good that the military has signaled that it would resist a Republican coup, even if this has yet to be seen if they'd put their money where their mouth is. But, the damage has been done and there's really nothing about Biden's modest win or the military's vague overtures towards democracy that signals that the United States as a democratic state/imperial formation is not in steady decline.

@@DoctorFurioso I agree with your sentiment. I will say however that MOST of Biden's votes came from white people. Trump also gained ground in every single demographic except whites. Minority votes by % of votes were much higher Biden than Trump but 40% of white men and 43% of white women voted Biden which accounted for significantly more actual votes than all the minorities combined. I'm only saying this because i want to point out that it was a group effort and fighting tyranny must be done together. Cheers.

I as a Veteran agree with this. I swear my oath to protect our Constitution. I want to know where to go and what to do if a certain president wants to tear it up or damage it. Where do the true oath keepers go, us who understand we took an Oath to protect a Document, and not a person or a deity. No, I do not swear to a deity, I do not have to as this country never intended it that way.

Mark Milleys oath is to whoever can give him the most power to oppress and kill as many people (doesn’t even matter the people) from the safety of a desk. I'm afraid to say this may be the end of democracy, i believe a coup will be attempted. And just like soldiers loyally deployed on the streets of the nation this year, i believe they will do the same now when they are ordered to shut the legislative and judicial branches down under the pretext of "national security concerns", they are trained to follow orders, orders which will be given by trump loyalists. Ask any soldier, the first thing on their mind is following orders, the constitution doesn't even cross the minds of many of these rank and file soldiers. The notion that these new Pentagon officials will uphold the constitution before trump is also delusional, they will become swollen with power while also pleasing the president, an attempt at keeping and holding their power. It'll be much easier to order the military to shut down the other 2 branches of government. Hold my hand Ms. Karissa, I'm anxious. I can already see it happening, as the media looks on in utter shock, and they say, "America, this is the end of democracy". That Constitution of the United States of America names the president as commander-in-chief. That Constitution grants the military no authority whatsoever beyond obedience to the commander-in-chief.

This was a reassurance from General Milley that the military will not follow the orders of a tyrant and that is what that beautiful document was created to do..

But time and time again our leaders always show they do what their donors want, not their constituent's. Joe could start with picking a cabinet that is a change agent, but it is looking like the Bush/Obama cabinet is having a baby, and that baby likes war. You should be skeptical, get news from multiple sources, including independent. We need to ask for better from our elected officials.

This makes me feel there’s hope for America. America will recover. No dictators.

The fact he needed to state what he did is tragic in itself.

As a Retired Marine, all I can say is I am so sorry to those families who have been devastated by actions of this leadership.

@Robert Schultz In the military we learn that the greater number for the greatest cause outweighs the individual. I think a lot of veterans forget that. And the best things a veteran can do to change the current situation is 1) Vote 2) Help your candidate anyway you can 3) Run for office. Pick one or all Now, those are just my personal thoughts on it, but the fact that this country is looking out for number 1 over the greater good is just sad

I hope the general reads this: Letter to the Morning Call: Editors, remember what I said in 2018, "A malignant narcissist does not go down alone they take everyone down with them. When I worked for the Wiley House, that became Kids Peace, I was a casework supervisor and it was my responsibility whenever a psychiatrist diagnosed a child with narcissism to come up with a treatment plan. My research into narcissism is beyond that of many in politics and am able to make statements on their behaviors. I on my own diagnosed trump with the psychiatric disability long before others which led me to make the prescient statement I made. We are not talking about a borderline case, we are talking about malignant narcissism. If you recall 200 psychiatrists in this country agreed on the diagnosis but are ignored because Trump was elected president. This remind me of one of the first things I learned in psychology from a professor Dubin: To determine if a person is insane it comes down to support. if someone says they are Jesus Christ and no one believe the person they are considered mentally disturbed and possibly put under care. If another person says it and has a sizable following nothing is done by authorities. In Trumps case he was elected president so 100 years of psychiatric advances in the understanding of mental llness is thrown out the window or bypassed. This brings me to my biggest concern. I have believed from the beginning that Trump was groomed by Russia with money and praise to be president and do what they want. That does not change who Trump is, a narcissist who built up a phony reputation of a successful business man even though everything he ever did was crooked and included free money from others. He has an ego that cannot handle losing and needs to do something to remain in power. The election fraud game is going nowhere so the rat needs to strike somewhere else to remain in power and that could, I say could be going to war with China because Trump loves blaming China for the virus that killed his presidency. It is a concern to me that Russia would like it if trump went to war with china because in the end Russia would emerge fully armed and possibly the dominant power. Keep in mind this is speculative but the truth is Russia would benefit so why wouldn't Russia push something they would benefit by and it would keep their president in office. What I am asking the editors is to share this with people who are important and can make sure Trump doesn't make this move. that is all I am asking. David Clark

Ask yourself this General, was the constitution upheld on this past election day? The United States wasn't united on that day, it was divided, the American peoples voice wasn't heard on that day, millions of people wanted President Trump to be our President for 4 more years, but this isn't what happened, our capitol was once again disrespected by these people who only think of themselves and not the people of this country, it's happened so many times through the years, I think the capitol should be bulldozed to the ground and rebuilt over in a different location as far away from these corrupt politicians. anyone else agree????

"And we want to ensure that there is always civilian leadership, civilian control of the military, and we will obey the lawful orders of civilian control of the military."

When did Gen. Mark Milley earn his Combat Infantry Badges (CIB)? He earned his 2nd CIB as a full bird colonel? In regards to earning a CIB, the requirements state, “These soldiers must have been personally present and engaged in active ground combat, to close with and destroy the enemy with direct fires.” So he was a full bird Colonel that was “engaged in active ground combat, to close with and destroy the enemy with direct fires”? Just curious.

That is true. I came to this country because I thought it was a great country, however, the biggest disappointment i found was the education system. Most expensive schooling in the industrial countries but the lowest level of results. I also found out right away how ignorant people are in the history of their own country. I knew more. What about Artificial Intelligence enemies such as Dr. Thomas Hofeller's Congressional redistricting design alogrithms for racially suppressing and racially diluting the voters illegally to manipulate the Electoral College votes. The nation has had the public disclosures of his 70000 digital files for 2 years now. And what has been accomplished with that evidence outside of North Carolina? Is the USA military powerless to act against could by Artificial Intelligence? Hofeller clearly stated that the Republican leadership's goal is to redistrict every 20 years towards the goal of complete control over the Electoral College and through it control the federal government permanently. That they do so by discriminating against Black and Hispanic voters during redistricting is illegal. The North Carolina example is glaring and recent.

Hiding behind the constitution, and failing to do his duty to protect federal property and American lives... And even active duty failing to recognize this.... no one asked him to give loyalty out side the Constitution.
