Thank you. I just found your channel, about 2 years late, it looks like. But you are doing exactly what I was wondering about. One bit of a tip that might not be well known is that many of those tips on the making pens are reversible. So if you really did "ruin" that one, try pulling it out and turning it over. You've not nothing to loose. And thank you again.

I've been eyeing those giant gel plates for a while, now, so I'm //really// looking forward to the unboxing video!!! This episode, on the other hand, sets me musing on the range of looks you've produced, over the last year or so: The masking tape technique; the other collagraph techniques; the wax crayon or grease pencil (or china marker) resist; the pop-art combinations of stencils/masks, photo and type transfers, with collage; all those Letraset examples.... So much diversity in technique and imagery. And now this great, more-expressive and -gestural technique. So nice to have someone researching all of these ideas for us! Thanks!!!

No needs for thanks. I get a lot of motivation to for my own art in experimenting and sharing the videos. Also, getting all the feedback and questions, knowing there are many others out there who just love and need to make art, is lovely. It's easy to to get cynical about the world sometimes and, it might sound a bit corny, but encouraging each other to try new things, spark ideas, be curious is potentially really powerful : ) Warmest wishes

You can make your own gelli plate with Glycerin, Gelatine and water. So you can create how big your plate should be. See youtube Gerda Lipski create your own gelli plate. Only 3 ingredients. English subtitles. I suceed with my first own gelli and it cost only very few.

So thanks again.

Scribble drawings, or any gestural mark making, in my opinion is the way forward if you want to build confidence in drawing. I love many approaches (as you've probably guessed from videos!) and can get lost in realism ,rendering etc but loose and scribbly definitely encourages a better understanding of form and encourages a less precious and self critical route. Most importantly, it encourages you to draw a lot, repeat, look again etc. Rambling on, sorry, I think the theory of drawing approaches and experience of drawing is fascinating!!!!!

I just bought my gel plate, haven't even unboxed it yet, but can't wait to make the embossing technique a part of my process. It actually fits perfectly for the painting I'm starting next, and for which I bought the gel plate. Thought I had to use tar gel to get my scribbly lines but this is off course easier (and finer!).

Love your videos. Also, good to see male demonstrators of art and craft. You don't see many of them on YT. I love the technique. I've been looking at ways of doing monoprinting; I didn't realise that the Gelli plate was so useful. Is it possible to clean the Gelli plate? Thanks again.

Thanks for the encouragement and glad you are enjoying videos. Gel plate, it turns out, can be used in so many ways! You can clean the plate with soap and water, baby oil and cloth. A nice idea is to roll on some acrylic then lift all the crusty stuff with a sketchbook page. You can then collage and draw on it ; )

The expressive marks on the horses is so good and freeing. The greenish tinted paint is good for refining around the image. Apparently very popular because Golden brand produces one, too. Would love to see your images in person. Wow, mega is right! Gel plate envy. Love the Caran d'ach Neo 1 wax pastels. Such quality art material that have so many uses. You will enjoy those, I'm sure. Ooo, can't wait.

I continue to be astonished by the ongoing inventiveness of people using the gel plate! This incredible art tool has certainly moved on from the early days. I love what you have done with your wonderfully free and expressive lines, and especially the effects in the final drawing with the halo effect and the water spots blotted off. I have used that technique with inked backgrounds but never thought of using it with the gel plate. Great video!

Hi pauline, no, not yet, I feared the heavier textures would make it tricky to get a clean print on. Am intending to give it a go though as a few people have mentioned it - might be a bit of a disastrous video!!!!!!

As usual a great video, just a heads up about those huge gel plates…I got one a few years ago. I didn’t check it out properly right away but put it a cupboard (it took so long to get to me that the project I wanted it for was done), fast forward 6 months and I got it out. It was covered in tiny bubbles on both sides. I should have sent it back, but it was 6 months ago. I thought it would be fine and you wouldn’t notice them…they were horrible. It may have been a bad batch, but I would have thought quality control would have picked it up. Fingers crossed yours is pristine. Keep up the great work, I know I’m not alone in that I look forward to your videos.

I have some experience with those bubbles, and I (somewhat accidentally) found a way to heal them. First, they happen when the plate is not stored on a very flat, smooth surface, or when there are air bubbles trapped between a plastic cover(s) and the plate. I had received a plate that already had these trapped bubbles (and resulting pits), and you're absolutely right about how horrible they are. I've seen one KZreadr who stores her plate between sheets of paper, instead of plastic, to prevent bubbles. But it seems to me that that would speed up leaching out the mineral oil the plate is impregnated with. That mineral oil is a part of why the plate works so well with acrylics. Also, the mineral oil seems to be the key to repairing a pitted surface. I still had the original plastic sheets that came with the plate in question (12" x 14"). The super-mega plate Mark is talking about unboxing doesn't come with a plastic case (at least in the US), and I'm not sure whether it comes packed between plastic sheets or not. I think some sort of smooth, air-tight seal would be important for this repair technique, but I'm not sure of that. I read comments about one person storing their super-large gel plate on a cookie sheet; probably a sheet of glass or the right kind of plastic (that wouldn't be harmed by the mineral oil) would also work. All I did to repair the pits was slather the area in and surrounding the surface pits with mineral (aka "baby") oil. (Why people ever thought this petroleum product was okay to smear on babies, I don't know, but that was one of its original purposes.) Then, I //carefully// laid one corner of the cover-plastic on the corner of the plate, and I slowly rolled the sheet down onto the plate, pressing and sliding my fingers firmly along the bend where the sheet meets the plate, smoothing it down across its width, to avoid introducing more air bubbles. I don't know how long it takes for the healing to occur. I had stacked the encased plate with a bunch of other stuff and then lost track of the plate, for several months. When I relocated it, however, there were no marks on the plate. Given how expensive these silicone gel plates are, it's definitely worth the time and effort to see whether you can get them to puff back up and fill those shallow pits. Otherwise, they will tend to print on everything you pull from the plate. At the time, the process of reapplying the plastic cover sheet without trapping bubbles felt like it was more time-consuming and tedious than would likely be worth it. It's way easier to trap bubbles than it seems like it should be. Also, getting the alignment of the sheet just right, so the whole assembly would fit back into the clamshell (in the case of the 12x14 plate) was tricky. Now, what I do when repacking the plate is get the plastic sheet well-aligned, however I can, air bubbles or no. Once I'm sure the assembly will fit back into the case, I peel the sheet up from one corner, almost to the diagonally-opposite corner, and roll it back down smoothly, massaging out any trapped air as I go. Also, whenever you clean the plate, wiping with mineral oil before packing it back up may well help maintain its cushy, squishy plumpness. Hope this is useful!

Thank you for that info…Yes, mine was the mega large plate that I purchased here in New Zealand. I do wonder if the bubbles happened during transit as I can’t imagine gelli arts quality control letting them get sold. I have cleaned my plates (I have a lot😉) with baby oil before but I hadn’t realized that it could help and repair defects. Currently it is stored on a large tile, so I will look at doing what you suggested. Thanks again…I hope Mark doesn’t have this issue, but this post will hopefully help him if he does. 😊
