    If you trace the image out on the back of the emboss sheet beforehand with oil pastel or crayon, then emboss as normal with a sheet of paper underneath, you get a second (semi-embossed) copy of the image with a different resist. I've had some really good results with double printing/overlaying the same image.

I get a lot of inspiration for drawing them….colors, textures, movement, etc. Gonna see how it goes with embossing and the crayon. 😊

    I tried this last night, a simple line drawing of a sumo wrestler, and it worked brilliantly. I did some painting directly onto the plate which worked 'kinda' well, but for the fact that my gel elf plate mysteriously was resisting the paint. Not sure if it was residue from the baby wipe or what, it's new to me. Thanks for linking me to this one!

    Really nice job with this technique! Also, a reminder of a couple of things, for me. First, this is a great demonstration of how much character of its own a printmaking technique confers. Unlike many (myself most definitely included), your drawings are always lovely. However, even for those of us with less-highly developed drawing skills, printmaking processes seem almost always to add a level of presence and liveliness to imagery. It's odd that simplifying the more spontaneous line quality of a sketch, as this embossing technique does, should somehow make the line /more/ engaging, but it surely seems to, to my eye. The other thing this video reminds me about is the value of drawing mundane items. I always feel like, "Why bother? Does the world really need another drawing of a pencil jar? And for that matter, does it /need/ another drawing of anything?" The result is that I don't draw the pencil jar, or anything else. This is an ongoing debate within me, at a 20,000-foot view. But when I see your drawings, they are evocative of something more than the existence and likeness of the objects you draw. There's something almost haunting in them. Another reason to draw such items, of course, is that I'd at least be /drawing/. Drawing anything sharpens observation and awareness. It also sharpens drawing skill, as well, which could come in handy if I ever do reconcile that inner debate and decide that there is something worth my taking the time to draw. Thanks for the reminders of why it's worth doing! (And sorry for the melancholy. The sun is south, the days are short, the clouds dense.)

    Hi maybe look at it another way, don't draw/paint for the value of the finished piece do it for the value of the experience itself. You do not want to focus or rush so much towards your destination that you do not enjoy the journey. Have fun practicing.

  • @Xenopticon

    @Xenopticon

    @@hakantacrafter813 Thanks for the encouragement. The central problem for me, I fear, is that I really don't enjoy drawing. ...Except, maybe, in the context of taking a class. And then, it's not every session. But it's such a foundational skill, I feel I ought to do more of it. I know that when I've had to do a lot of it, for classes, I got a lot better. But it never feels like play. It's almost always drudgery, with occasional highs when I have a good day. And the "good day" is defined by the results I produce. It's a bit of a dilemma.

    What a good reminder! I have said virtually these same things to myself… also, it feels mundane to draw the mundane. You’ve helped to remind me that it is about the process, not the product. Thank you!🎉

  • @yeatesmakes

    really interesting comments. everyday items, I feel, are amazing for drawing and speak so much about out little rituals and connections. for me, objects aren't mundane because of this. i touched on it briefly in the vid, but I think cropping tightly furthers the impact and intrigue and can add so much narrative too. i totally understand your reluctance to draw. it takes discipline to keep up practice even for me and I LOVE drawing! its hard to not feel pressure on an outcome so maybe just focus on time limited continuous line stuff where expectations are lower but you are still looking and analysing. i'm a real advocate of drawing from memory and imagination too - you see your mistakes, of course, but can excuse them because you weren't looking at something!!!!!

Don't give up trying, I had already little successful moments and it is fun to explore the materials. Next try is combinding "kitchen letographie" (there are videos on youtube, embossed imgages on aluminium foil or inside of tetra packs) with the gelli plate

    @@yeatesmakes hmm, I have seen other artists with videos about their favorite books (as well as vlogs from non artists about favorite books, both illustrated and not) and have not heard or seen there being issues with this type of content. I believe as long as you site the author and show highlights, as apposed to the whole book, that you shouldn't fall into copyright issues. And it would bring a wider audience to the artists and authors. Though, I am not an expert on the rules of KZread. Totally understandable to avoid content you are unsure about. I am using buff to pull with as it the white of the paper then becomes another tone. Not much done today as I have to wait till tomorrow to get a decent black. Was that neocolor 1 you were putting the tones in with? Also admired your continuous line drawing, nice skill which I have never had. Thanks again.

    thank you for exploring and sharing this ink embossing technique. i used it today and absolutely love the outcome and endless possibilities with figures, faces, mark makings, patterns and so much more. awesome and gives many options . great method too to use for my quick sketches turns em into great prints of art. im able to edit or embellish with acrylic pens on the plate or directly on the print. fun, creative inspirational, liberating

    Great as always. Could you not even make a video about safe wash relief inks on a gelliplate? I am sure, we all could learn a lot of this.😊

    Hi there, This is a great question / request and i would love to make a video on this. However, I've found all the two types of water based / safe wash relief inks I have tried both stained the plate. This did not affect the plate at all beyond making it much less transparent. As I need the transparency in the approaches I like to use, this was a big factor in steering clear!!!

    Thatˋs Right. Cleaning with oel works well. But they donˋt dry properly on the paper. You would also have to have a different approach than with acrylic. I donˋt Reality know with one.Grass Impression work very well, but I donˋt realy care. Talking off a dried layer with a new layer paint as with acrylic does not work. Maybe you feel like trying something out, because the color brilliance is much better and you donˋt have to hurry so much. Greetings from Germany, Ulrike 😊

    Love how these 2 technics work together! Looking fwd to playing around with these on my gel plate. I’ve tried embossing with foam stuff and I’ve tried wax resist but this is something else altogether! 😮 Thanks a lot 👌
