In this video I expand the Arduino code to drive an LCD display to show the Counts Per Minute and convert this using the characteristics of the tube to show MicroSievert per hour. I transfer the Arduino sketch to a small Arduino "mini" and show the changes in the sketch to reflect the different pins used. I also modify the sketch to display the overall time the Geiger Counter is powered and the total number of counts. Finally I show the completed project built into a novel project box!

    Build a Simple ION Chamber to detect the Apha Particles. You could mount your Geiger Tube in a wand connected to the PCB via some Coaxial Cable.

    Thanks! I have compared it to a Gamma Scout costing around €400 and it was in general agreement. You can see the Gamma scout on this link: www.gamma-scout.com/EN/Leistungsmerkmale.php I had some problems with my camera doing the video but hope to salvage what I can and upload it soon.

    Nice, thank you. The uSv/h reading arguably has too many digits. When the CPM is "30", then the uSv/h is "0.2436" which is overly precise considering that the input data is just 30. It's a "Significant Figures" detail.

    Did you find out what these 2 pins described as P100 are for? Maybe they give cleaner signal than VIN?

    one thing though, do you need a window on the box for better sensitivity or how do you calibrate for pvc enclosure for beta and gamma?

    Gave this project a build but with a I2C OLED display. Looks nice, but its a smaller than the LCD so a more difficult read. So now once I move it to a nano and then 3d print a case, it should be good to go. Any idea how to calibrate the geiger board? I have access to a radiation meter (as im a radiation worker) so getting accurate numbers is easy for me. However this geiger kit has surprisingly little data online. I'm guessing the trim pot on the board is for calibrating the count rate?

    DO NOT TOUCH THE TRIM POT!! It sets the high voltage for the Geiger tube!     I've almost got it all together! It looks good on the Serial Monitor, but having issues debugging the LCD interface.

    I would try loading one of the Arduino test sketches for the LCD. Having got that working it should be easier to go back to the project and find the issue. Good luck!

    @@1nformatica I think I need to look into the 555 circuit a bit. I got the output on the LCD, but if it sees anything over ambient radiation it will eventually throw bad characters on the LCD.

    It seems like you have noise on the signal. If you have an oscilloscope you should see a clean pulse.

    You can calibrate by changing the conversion factor here : kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYSLmaWLda7RddI.html I compared my unit with a professional one Gamma-Scout ALERT and it was close enough for my use.

    I went to the location where the B52 crash was and when filming was approached and "advised" not to continue. The unit works well and I checked it against a professional Gamma Scout meter and they were in agreement.

    @@1nformatica I bought Arduino kit and ordered the same counter. I am gonna build this geiger counter project. But prob will be in outside of the counter. Final product will look like a mine detector. I will use it to hunt uranium ore.

    @@1nformatica it's done. I didn't use that circuit with 555 IC. I changed code ''attachInterrupt(digitalPinToInterrupt(2), countPulse, RISING);'' into attachInterrupt(digitalPinToInterrupt(2), countPulse, FALLING); and it works!! I connected VIN pin on geiger to pin-2 on the arduino.

    There _must_ be something wrong with the conversion, because: 120 CPM equals ~ 0,0001 mSv /h

    The calculation from CPM to mSv/h includes a conversion factor depending on the tube characteristics kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYSLmaWLda7RddI.html

    The glass beads only contain a miniscule amount of Uranium oxide ay 0.2%. I cannot see that being a problem. When I was at school and my physics teacher was demonstrating radiation with some samples (lead apron and everything) he asked if anyone had a watch with a luminous dial. My friend had his father's watch from his time in the air force. When tested the counter went off the scale!! Way more dangerous than the samples!
