You should check out a different type of radiation detector. One based on a photodiode, these are even capable of gamma spectroscopy. These types of radiation detectors are cool because they are fairly simple and don't require a high voltage power supply so they can be made very small. Great video :)

Thanks for youre Comment! :) Yes i was thinking of some Scintillator (id like to build something with a old Photo Multiplier Tube) or even the more "modern" approach via Photodiode... Its definitely on my Bucket List, but ive got some other Projects i want to complete first :) ...Gamma Spectroscopy is definitely a long time goal for me but this will take me a while ;)

I dont know about your friend and how he came about the yellow housing, but I cant find one shy of 80 usd for one. For reference the enclosure is a polyamide handheld enclosure, or a Rose Bopal pendant enclosure.

how did you ugrade the gmc-320 exactly? I see the new tube housing and the potentiometer on the other side, but what did you do internally? is it hard? I'm thinking of doing the hack myself buying those parts

actually i just removed the original battery and installed another one, but only for space reasons. the SBT-11a Tube fits nicely into the original battery compartment, and the new battery fits nicely where the old tube was in :) PS: theres no potentiometer, the screw on the front side is only to hold the SBT-11a in place ;) its very easy!

sadly my gmc-320 detector broke recently.. the tube is okay, and i think the geiger counter part is also okay, its still clicking, but i guess the chip on the motherboard died on me :( maybe tampering with the device is not such a great idea after all ;) i will ty to update my geiger counter collection and make a video about them at some point, but recently i got myself a Radiacode 102 Scintillator detector and i can highly recommend investing in one of those, its amazing! @@rinterstate

Do you know what kind of probe the Yellow geiger counter has?

i cant remember the exact model, but its an american pancake type if i remember corectly ;)

GMC320 isnt sensitive to alpha particules ; and a thin sheet of aluminium doesnt stop beta; it needs to be a few mm thick.

yes youre right about the aluminium, i found out meanwhile ;) However my GMC320 can detect alphas, because i changed the tube for a Sbt-11a tube (great GM tube btw!) ;)
