The popular definition of nerd appears to be one who's obsessed with pop culture, like fiction. I wouldn't call myself a nerd, as it seems to mean someone who watches a lot of TV, which is a weird thing to brag about. All these people who self identify as nerds appear to be obsessed with comic book movies. I like learning and watch sci-fi, but calling myself a nerd just seems boastful.

Why would they hate you for being a geek/nerd? Because geeks/nerds are thought to be very unsocial. People generally hate unsocial others. I think nerd needs more time to focus on his subject thus might be perceived as more unsocial. Geek, judging by Hanna's explanation, might be considered as a balance between intelligence/knowledge and socializing.

The Fan vs Practitioner has always been my definition of their difference. I see a nerd as someone who spend so much time on something (be it sports, math, games etc.), that it takes up a significant portion of their life. While a geek could be profoundly interested in the subject in question, it wouldn't significantly disrupt or influence his or her daily life. Which means I'm quite nerdy about a few things, but geeky about a whole range of subjects.

I think that's the essence of it in English too. A nerd actually has scientific or technical talent and isn't eager to show it off, but can't totally avoid it. A geek wants the prestige of a nerd, but gets wrapped up in popular software and computer games instead of real science or deep understanding of technology. The first time I heard "nerd" used as a compliment was at a supercomputer conference.

I'm so happy to see that there is a bigger need than me who actually catalogued data showing evidence of the separation. My own summary of the two has been that nerds love to collect knowledge as to where geeks love to collect Star Wars figurines.

Heck, we could even measure weight in solar masses - which would be rather silly. Which means I'd weigh around 0.0000000000000000000000000004 solar masses, a pretty easy number to beat in IQ.

+Chaitanya Nivsarkar Your intelligence quotient (IQ) is your mental age divided by your chronological age, multiplied by 100. Since the average IQ is by definition 100, I would venture to say that any adult whose weight is less than his or her IQ is almost certainly deathly ill. I can assure you that, however high you might believe my IQ to be, I haven't weighed that little in about thirty years.

I have a lot to say on this subject, but I think the explanation in this video, while intriguing and informative, only scratches the surface. This video portrays "geekdom "and "nerdom" as "social facts" (an idea that originated with Emile Durkheim). That is to say, here we are treating these two categories of people as objectively existing groups with their own solidarity rather than as treating these terms as labels for relevant reference groups used by those inside a different, non nerd/geek in-group. This distinction- whether "geeks" and "nerds" are true subcultures with solidarity- is worthy of debate. It may be that there is a recent move toward creating solidarity among people who embrace these labels- whereas originally these terms may have been reserved *only* as words used to categorize negative out-groups, used by people who did NOT consider themselves to be either "nerds" or "geeks." Sociology masters grad giving her take on the subject here. (does this mean I fit either label?)

I think anyone who cares about the difference between a "geek" and a "nerd" is probably both. And a shallow person who puts too much stock in labels.

No self respecting geek would identify with Apple computer, unless you were using a mac 128k as a terminal client. I am a huge computer geek my self and I know of no other geeks who use modern apple computers for anything. They are usually associated with computer illiterates.

Giggity Goebbels this approaches the terms in a generalization of the classifications as that is the only real way to address it. Everyone is different and many people are both geeks and nerds so certainly isn't meant to apply to everyone. The hardcore hardware is not accurate to a lot of people as well. I want great hardware but I don't care if it is the latest and greatest, just want it to be reasonably priced and can do everything I want to do. Alan Toner Apple fans can be both geeks and nerds. There are graphic designers and video editors that swear by Macs and I am sure there are many other people who will as well. Apple is overpriced inferior hardware but Windows is utter garbage. I use PC hardware with Linux as my OS so I get all the benefits that Mac users get but I also get many more including the cost of my computers. OSX is easily superior to Windows but that is not saying OSX is great or even good, Windows is just utter garbage.

I don't think Apple computers have any relation with geekyness, no matter if positive or negative. But if a geek uses Mac they will use the command line and Unix capabilities of OS X.

STEM professors commonly use Macs now after Apple switched to x86 and the FreeBSD core. So you could say nobody is using the traditional Mac OS anymore; Apple killed it and now use *nix.

For games it is clearly the speed. The textures load rate is defined by how much ram your graphics card is dedicated to and how fast those rams are. While more ram are for rendering and multitasking like MurderousCat said. But otherwise you are perfectly right.

My takeaway from the video is: a geek wants to have fun and put some spice in theirs life and a nerd wants to develope skills and knowledge to enrich their life. An example I thought of: a geek would dress up as a dwarf for Halloween but a nerd would study elvish.
