Everyone says it doesn't sound like a rick and then you just play along with Rush and it proves them wrong. It sounds a lot like a Rick to me.

. Absolutely brilliant example that the "Rick tone" is easily attainable without a Rick. Probably why Geddy Lee dumped the Ricks in favour of tye FJBs a long time ago.

Sounds very convincing to my ears.

I’m jonesing for one of these. Sounds great, especially the neck pup. I like the looks better than a real Rickenbacker, actually! And I like the price WAY more than a Rickenbacker.

I had a fake one and wanted the real thing, so I sold a bunch of my guitars and other stuff and got a brand new rick for $2000. I hated it, instant regret. It’s buzzy, the bridge sucks, the neck pickup is lifeless, and it’s sucks to play lol. I sold it

@@markporter1901 mine shipped yesterday and I ordered it in August.Thomann was having a hard time getting them in stock.Be prepared for the lead time being pushed back as they kept sending emails saying that stock has been delayed. I only found out it shipped through my bank account as they don't take your cash till it ships.Good luck.

So, so, so awesome! Great job, Seth, and thanks for sharing. One little thing to check. It was really noticeable that the first note of Fly By Night (after the slide down) was not in tune with the band. Could be the recording. The bass sounds great, but check your tuning up and down the neck. Might need a set-up. Other than that the bass sounds great, and your playing is inspiring.

Thank you for the kind words! I agree - the pitch is off. Unfortunately there was something off with the bass, possibly intonation, where even just the fifth fret note was off pitch when the bass was fully in tune.

Light gauge steel rotosounds. I use them on almost everything.

My favorite tone was his Rick back on Exit Stage Left

Mike Roman I think it sounds pretty good too! It’s actually fat. Like P-Bass fat. But, the radius is very large which makes it not protrude far out into your grasp while playing. It’s on the larger side but is quite nice to play.

Hi Seth, Really enjoyed your video and you've really nailed Geddy's tone. Would you mind sharing your amp settings to get that scooped out Rick tone? Are you using a Sansamp pedal as well to help shape the tone or is that all coming from the HB RB-414?

Thanks! In Logic, I squashed it with “vintage compressor,” used TSE AUDIO BOD (Sansamp copy), and added “flip top” amp (old school tube amp copy). All that to say, there is some magic going on behind the scenes, but the bass can get a pretty good sound out of it with a little help. I think I’ll do a video down the road of before and after of the bass to give a better idea of what I’ve got going on.

Hey, whats the difference of tones between RB-414 and the classic RB-414CS hollow body, is it different timbres? And which of the two is more similar to the original 4001 / 4003? Thank you!

It’s a reasonable facsimile. There are issues with this instrument, but staying lower of the fifth fret and fixing the buzz, leveling the frets having it setup well straightening the neck, changing the pickups, strings, shielding the cavities and you’re almost there.

@@tintecobrizo to each their own. I wasn’t intending to dis anyone showing interest. I’ve had 2 4003’s and they come with their own trouble but they don’t sound like this.

Not bad at all, all things considered. I've been playing Rush tunes on my 1985 Rick since 1986 and that's a pretty solid approximation. I love the real Rick-style 1.75 nut width on this bass and when they are in stock I'll be getting one since that Rick of mine is pretty much a piece of wall art now. Thanks for the vid. I may swap out the pickups and the wiring harness but stock it's pretty solid. Needs a little more punch, but for $200 what's important is getting the feel of a Rick, which almost no other bass on the market comes close to achieving.

Richard Lunn I put Rotosound strings on. It requires long scale strings. Didn’t realize that until I strung it up. Action was actually very good out of the box. I only did a few minor tweaks.

I have a Rickenbacker 4003 in the very lovely looking walnut and maple oiled wood finish. It is not a good guitar - the build suffers from scratches across the neck, inlays with the pointy corners broken off and inexpertly filled, and a run of glue on the back where it squeezed out of the joint. Mine is very headstock heavy (don't know if that's just this model due to the density of the wood) but I've had to replace the strap bolt on the front horn with a stout screw protruding 3 inches/75mm to get better leverage to stop the neck diving towards the floor. So now it won't fit in the fitted case anymore. The design of the bridge is a travesty. I had to take it apart and turn the saddles for the two highest strings around just to be able to intonate it properly. Also it's not possible to adjust the intonation without significantly slackening the strings. The pickup selector switch is just some springy steel leaf springs pushed together or apart by the toggle switch. Mine get dirty or oxidised such that the signal is scratchy or cuts out altogether. To attend to it I have to carefully remove the scratchplate. I also have a (Mexican) Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass and it's much better made and reliable. To be fair the stock pickups in the GL are OK but not great - I replaced mine with Fender Custom Shop pickups which are a huge improvement. The Jazz (without the pickup upgrade) is half the price of the Ric and I'm tempted to say it's twice as good. Even if I was a working musician and successful enough to have a tech keeping the Ric working I'd still say the Fender is inherently better. The Fender also seems much more stable in relation to seasons/weather, such that its stays set up and only wanders slightly - by contrast the Ric is very affected by ambient temperature and humidity (I presume that's what affects it). Both hang on the wall next to each other in the same conditions and while the Fender just 'works' the Ric has to be in the right mood. Just a guess but this _might_ be affected more by being an oil finish model than a more moisture-proof lacquered one. I'm not affiliated with either Rickenbacker or Fender - just speaking about my own experience.

I've specifically been looking at getting a walnut ric for well over a year now, and I was even getting ready to start financing one, but if it's as fickle of an instrument as you say, I'm probably better off putting that money elsewhere. I am surprised that the handiwork on yours was so poor though, from what I understand Rickenbacker takes great pride in making sure their instruments are perfectly made, hence why they're only produced in one factory to this day.

I really do wish Rickenbacker would consider doing what Fender and Gibson have done, and have a sub-brand that makes stuff in Asia, thereby being able to sell it for considerably cheaper, while still retaining most of the quality of an original product. I get not wanting to make it underneath the Rickenbacker brand name as it cheapens the brand name, but I personally still consider Fender to be a top quality brand despite the fact that Squire exists. I would have bought a Rickenbacker long ago if it wasn't $2500 however it is what it is I suppose. I tried a 4003 at a music store this summer, and it was exactly what I dreamed of and more, but I just can't justify the price by any means honestly. I've heard some of the tones available through this bass on other videos on KZread, and I haven't heard anything that's right on the nose of being a Rickenbacker, sounds nearly like my $200 squire jazz bass from 15 years ago honestly.

@@thatmatt41 I get why they don't do it, and honestly, good for them on not compromising their brand. That said, I'll just keep on playing my Squier. I have an HH Contemporary Squier Jazz Bass, and it is a fucking dream. It's one of their higher end squires, and honestly, I see 0 reason to "upgrade". It does what I want it to do, better than the rest of my basses. That said, I still don't have a good P-bass, so that would definitely be worth looking into

Is this legit just the bass? What did you have to add to it if anything? Looking at getting one and doing some bridge upgrades, but if the pups sound that good I might not touch them

And Chris Squire tones?

It's one my favorite things about the bass. It's one of the thicker necks that I've played, in terms of width. This makes the strings nicely spaced out but requires a little bit of change in technique to mute them at different times. It has a really large radius that makes it feel nice and flat in the back. So, it's a little wide but actually very comfortable and nice to play. And oddly enough, the frets are smoother than any other sub $300 bass I've played. Lastly, the overall fit and finish of it is a little lacking - small visible glue and paint errors.

@@T-Cranmer Last month I bought a 4003 and this Harley Benton is almost there. It doesn't have that snarl. But definitely worth the money. I think I'd recommend the HB to anyone, based on sound alone. Yes, Rick's have wide, thick necks. Nothing like my Guild Pilot, or the Sterling SUB, but not hard to get used to. One could easily switch back and forth with little to no adjustment to their playing style.

Yessir, I didn’t keep it long term. Sold it and got a Retrovibe bass with 4003 Rick style pickups. Sounds much more like the real thing. I’ll do some videos with it soon!

A. W. One of the downsides to this bass was the somewhat poor build quality. I’m hoping that I can get some of those types of kinds worked out when I take it in for a pickup swap.

They're super long (extra long) scales on the RB, I put long scales on when I first changed, big mistake.

its never in the bass. Gotta have the fingers.
