Here's my review of the 2016 edition of the amazing #85 Bullet End Jack from Great Eastern Cutlery. This is one of my all time favorite jack knife patterns from our friends in Titusville, PA, and this year's run does not disappoint! Check it out...

Watching this in November 2023. Spectacular. The most beautiful production pocket knives ever made in my opinion. Pains me to find out that Mr. Latham has a lifetime lock on these Northfield variants. Means I will probably never get to own one. Zero success dealing for SFO’s. Thank you for showing them anyhow. Just perfection. They are the best. Just not enough to go around. These particular knives may very well never be made again. If they pop up on EBay ya gotta have a very fat wallet. Anyhow, marvelous video sir. Thank you for sharing. And God bless

My Northwoods Madison Barlow in natural micarta is finished that way. I like it. It has the kind of character a working knife should have. Like a set of work boots.

Great choices by Mike and great execution by GEC. Would love to see them, with a caplifter secondary blade. The smooth autumn bone is perfection and personally, I like the micarta a lot too. Thanks for the review .

Love that matte/rubbed finish. Anybody who hates it, feel free to send your knife to me, I'll take it hahaha!

Just ordered me a 2 bladed smooth bone last night. Got real lucky, it was the only one not snapped up by early reserves.

Hey Rob! Do you know what type of bone the "Autumn gold bone" is cut from? Looked around and could seem to find much. Thought I had heard it was cow bone...

They are some beautiful knives for sure. I am surprised at the "surprise" by the satin finishing on the canvas micarta knives. By my recollection all of the "course" micarta knives GEC has run in the last year or so have been finished that way. Most recently, for example, Mikes SFO Yankee barlow (spear blades) as well as the denim micarta Northwoods Madison Barlow and Broadway Jack. I can see it not being everyone's "cup-o-joe" but I think it suits them. It would have been nice to have smooth ivory bone as an option, gotta agree with you on that one.

Ya know what, I actually dig that satin/matte finish on the knife with the micarta. But I guess I can see why some folks would be disappointed. But still, for me personally, I think it has a more original look this way. Congrats my friend, I know you've been wanting to add some 85's to your stable of knives. Way to go!

very nice knives and review thank you. just a thought i had sharp liners on a Native 5 and ran an old stone over them and they smoothed out great no marks but the dust got in the pivot and was a pain to clean.. maybe you know a better way?

Got a two blade in jigged bone yesterday. Feels like standard quality for GEC to date to me. Agree with the comments about the cover materials, this is a coveted size and pattern, Mike could have sold many more. My only complaint is a design complaint. I have a Nf-77 two blade from CK, and love it (ivory bone, btw). But the small blade is on the opposite side and with the nail mark on the opposing side. It makes more ergonomic sense, and the lines are cleaner. As well, it would make more sense to have the match striker of the main blade (which is beautiful) to be functional when the knife is closed, this design has it covered by the small blade.

Very nice duo Rob. I imagine you sharpened the main blades enough so the 'rapping/rolling' issue against the backspring is now non-existent? It's taken a re-profile or two on my 2011 Forum Knife to solve that slight 'issue'. I do enjoy how they put matchstrike pulls on the secondary coping blade. Still waiting on my single blade polished stag~

+R Tsai Not all GEC knives had a blade rapping issue. Only some did and only on some patterns. I just bought 2 of these SFO #85 Bullet End Jacks myself. I got the 2-blade Smooth Autumn Bone exactly like Rob has here, and my other is also a 2 blader in the Antique Yellow jigged bone, and neither one of them have a blade rapping issue. Some of their earliest 85's did indeed have some blade rapping. I also have 4 other 85's from earlier runs, and none of mine have blade rapping. They are still factory fresh & never been sharpened yet. ( I do have 7 GEC's that I EDC, and 5 others from other makers that I use.) GEC will indeed fix any blade rapping issue, and if it is a knife to be used, I simply recommend that the owner put his own edge on the knife, and in most cases, it removes just enough steel to solve the problem. If it doesn't, then send it to GEC and they will carefully remove some material off the inside of the backspring where the blade is striking it. You shouldn't have to buy a new knife, only to remove a lot of the blade steel to fix it. GEC should remove material from the backspring, so you still have a nice full blade. Throughout history, there have been many really good cutlery companies who made pocket knives that would occasionally have this same issue. Congrats on buying one of these with the polished stag. Cheers.

Mike did satin bolsters on his 48 improved trapper sfo in blackwood, I like the satin blades, satin bolsters, Houndstooth shield, blackwood, on that run.

I forgot to mention, don't worry about the finish on the micarta too much if you plan on using /carrying the knife. My 79 workhorse whittler, in natural micarta (only in production sheet, not on website), is now a dark red and somewhere between smooth and textured. if used, these 85 micartas will end up the same. I guess sweat and oil turn the color/texture.

Might be a hard question but what do you prefer NorthField or Northwood knives? I'm have a hard time in choosing?

+Blackoutvader Other than "the everyday Barlow" and the "Indian River Jack"......all new Northwoods knives are 100% made by GEC. Even the patterns are exact GEC patterns, but with a slightly or drastically altered blade. The quality of the Northwoods made by GEC is identical to the knives GEC makes for themselves. It's just a matter of taste, which you prefer, or what style or set up "floats YOUR boat"........You really can't go wrong with either brand. Just be wary of the ones I just mentioned made by Queen, as most are full of factory flaws. Hope this helps. Cheers.

I agree on the ebony and ivory bone. I also would like to have seen an ivory micarta come from GEC. I have the autumn jigged bone and honestly...its OK, nothing great....
