In this video, I unbox my new GEC 25 Northfield Barlows from Mike Latham. These are pretty awesome.

    i got a northwoods hawthorne jack and little bay in burlap and i wasnt too happy with how they turned out...i got both in giraffe bone also and they turned out great. so next time i will not get a micarta, as it looks gec puts less effort into those. they must run those first then do the nicer handle materials....great knifr videos!

    let me add that the burlap northwoods uses comes out terrible. i wish they would use something similar to gec.... also id like to see the knife blade line up with the back spring on ALL slipjoints.

    Glad to see I'm not the only one with the sunken halfstop. Honestly though, that doesn't bother me. The centering and everything else is dead on. Wasn't crazy about the bolsters when I first saw them but they're growing on me... something different. I got the burlap but that ironwood one you got is stunning! Enjoy man! Oh, and I know that's what they say about traditionals and productions in general about the centering but I personally think that's BS. GEC has proven time and time again that they CAN get the blades centered so when they aren't I personally think it was a rushed run. Just my 2 cents.

  • @Alumapro23

    @Alumapro23

    madagi Yeah, I noted the back spring positions because I know some people want to know that. I don't care, as long as they're flush when opened and closed. I agree with you on centering. I do own and have owned several Northwoods (10ish) and this has only been an issue on my Indian River Jack made by Queen. I couldn't count how many GEC's I own and/or have owned and I've never had a significant issue with any of those. If that is what is going to pass for first quality, I think that speaks volumes for someone. I can't say GEC, because it seems like they mark their knives seconds for little or nothing. I hate that, but that is the info being relayed to me. I am waiting on a response to what qualifies a Northwoods to be an EDC or second quality, if the burlap Little Bay I got does not.

    Alchemy_1 I actually made a request / suggestion to KSF that they tell the company that did the production of their Northwoods in the description. I know plenty of people like Queen knives but I haven't had good experiences with them so that little bit of extra info would be helpful to me in deciding what to purchase. I'd be interested in their response to you on your question about seconds. I'm guessing it'd be obvious cosmetic issues with the covers and / or blade. Cracks, chips etc. Not sure what else it would be. Remember the blue bone Northwoods Barlow done by Queen? They had awful blade play and that was apparently ok. Haha Best solution would just be to have GEC do all their knives! ;)

    madagi I remember those, but he did discount the entire batch. At least acknowledge it in that way. I'm willing to say that the red linen may meet criteria, but I find it hard to believe that the burlap does. I thought these Little Bays were made by GEC? They had pics of the boalsters on their progress page, but they were taken down. Either way, this is not "premium".

  • @tyroneshoelaces9742

    For what you pay for a Northwoods, the centering should be dead nuts on! I expect nothing less. KSF needs to know about that

    So far I'm happy with the fit and finish on my little bays. The only gripe that I have is the pull. I think they're all around 8-9! Hope they'll loosen up in time.

    j_o_e_l_ 06 I've heard that about the pull on the Little Bays and 25's. None of my 5 so far are that stiff. As I mentioned in the video, my micarta had a bit of a gritty/stiff pull, but I sat down with some oil and worked/cleaned the pivot. Now, it's comfortable and smooth throughout the pull.

  • @JGOIII1978

    @JGOIII1978

    Alchemy_1, did that too. Maybe I need to flush the pivot again. I think the hawthorn's had the better fit & finish, better pull and way better overall. For some reason, they may have rushed the production on this one. I also got 5. 👍🏻

    j_o_e_l_ 06 Yeah, it takes a fairly long time to flush it out from scratch. I've never seen a GEC made knife, period, with this kind of fit and finish and it be called normal. I've never seen a GEC made second/blemish knife and it have this fit and finish. Like I said, the only knife I've seen be "normal" and this bad is my Queen made Indian River Jack.

    j_o_e_l_ 06 I have to say; I'm not ecstatic about the QC in my burlap, but KSF had been very polite, professional, and prompt in addressing my concerns. The guy I've been speaking with offered me a $20 store credit. I think a $20 refund would be better, but the credit is a good faith compromise that I can accept.

  • @Alumapro23

    5 жыл бұрын

    Rhonda Hebert Thanks. I agree. Case’s style, as a whole, doesn’t appeal to me, but I’d only pick one out in person if I was going to buy one. Case has really gone down hill over the years. Sad for such a truly iconic American brand. They haven’t even pinned shields in for years. Gluing shields in is super lazy and not a sign of attention to detail.

    @@Alumapro23 I've never heard of a Case shield falling out and haven't seen a used one for sale on eBay with it missing. Possibly just unnecessary to pin it? Most of my Case knives are either equal or 90% of my GECs, at half the price. Thanks for the video.

    Paul Gruodis I don’t know if it’s a must or not, but that’s the way it has been done for 100’s of years. That’s the traditional way to do it and using glue is a cost saving measure. A compromise for modern economic reasons. I wish I could say the same for equal quality. I haven’t had any knife from a recent (within the past 5-10 years) run that’s equal. For me, the $10-$40 is worth the cash. Especially when I keep grabbing knives and even ones like the recent “from the vault” Barlow and it’s as bad as it is. Did you see that vid? The follow up is dropping this Saturday. For a knife that’s hyped up as a limited edition exclusive, I was very let down. Scratch that. I think the first video I shot is dropping this weekend. Check it out. That knife is no where near GEC quality. Even the edge looks like it was sharpened on a brick.
