Dallas Video Production| Production Vlog Behind the Scenes | Dallas Texas DP
In this vlog I prep my van for a three day production. I have to factor in logistics for multiple locations. Day one and two both have stairs to contend with. I always bring a little extra lighting gear incase I need more output or flexibility. My go to lighting will be books, bounce and hair lights. Utilizing the Amaran T2C, Aputure 600D Pro, Aputure 600X Pro and Aputure 1200D Pro.

What does a prep day look like for you? Do you charge for it?

Gear list check, charge check, memory check and turn on and off devices to see if they still function as wanted (gear settings). It’s all a part of the customer service and customer experience we provide to make the experience as professional and easy for the client 👍 Any big prep regarding scouting and shooting planing goes into pre shoot time.

Preparation is key! The more difficult a shoot is, the more hassle you can save yourself with enough prep time. When I think back to some of the shoots that I did... Like one time, we were in a 500 square foot restaurant area with huge window fronts facing the sun, and all we were given to work with were three tiny little panel lights, cheap knock-offs with an awful magenta shift that didn't have the slightest effect on the talents sitting in front of those windows. If only the director had given us time to prepare, it could have been so beautiful...

Sometimes we just have to go with the flow. That is one of the big battles between DP's and Gaffers, time and money. Sounds like a fun shoot, I started out with those cheap junk china panels.

A lot of work went into seeing what worked best. I watched you video, nice rig you have! The biggest advice I can give is never go too cheap and always change things to make you work easier. The lift is a great upgrade. Mine comes in next week, I hope!

Solid video! Can I ask how you mount your umbrellas to the larger lights 300D and up?

  • @PDMokry

So a simple fix that should work for any setup is a super clamp and an umbrella holder. Use the stud of the super clamp and attach the umbrella holder to it vs the stand. Then attach the super clamp to the stand or yoke of the light.
