GEAR ENVY and how to fight it
We all get it. Scrolling socials and seeing everyone but ourselves with the latest and greatest gear. (If it's that great why do they replace it for the next thing 3 months later?!)
This video is a step away from the cooking but goes into how I TRY and fight gear envy.

As with many hobbies, I spend a lot of time researching what I need before I purchase and try to buy items that will last and do the job well. I have an MSR windburner stove that I love. I brought the one for multiple people because I knew I am likely to use it both on single trips but also when out with family and friends- but also because the burner is separate from the gas bottle as I'm often in the wind and would be more stable. Investing in good functional pieces that work for you is definitely my way to deal with gear envy

Perfectly said! Buying well means buying once. And. That is an excellent stove.
Look at Paramo, possibly the best outdoor credentials (recycling, reselling and repair all possible through them)...and the bonus is it works too....for waterproofs...still have loads of envy about other stuff too, I share your affliction.

PARAMO!! I used to have a paramo wind proof smock that I left with a girlfriend who became an ex. I got most of my stuff back but along with a few odds and sods was this smock. I loved that thing!
Here here Thom! A great message.

Thank you Steve.
Yes. All of this…
Absolutely agree with all of this, yet still guilty as charged when it comes to gear envy.

Also guilty. And guilty for buying stuff I know I don’t need. But getting better!
Another great video on this channel, thinking oudside the box. Here are my thoughts. I think this might be a male problem comparing some size. - Don't upgrade your gear for the sake of upgrading. (Not my words) Ask yourself which specific problem you have, that this new stuff needs to fix. - I usualy don't buy gear immediately I think about it a few weeks. Do you really need that. - I remember how much money I invested in cheap garbage that went straight to the bin or I never really used. I bought so many cheap tents, the summary would have bought me a Hilleberg tent. - THE TRANGIA: It is such a great old peace of gear that reminds me, that I don't need a fancy new stove. It just does its job and it will always do. - Buy expensive gear. Usualy you have to wait for it long time because it is to expensive to afford it immediately. So you have more time to think about it. And you want it too last longer.

Thank you. I recorded this a while ago but wasn’t sure to put it out or not. These are all great points and well said. And you’re right about the TRANGIA being such a great old piece of gear. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

@@OffTheBeatenPot Oh please keep uploading these videos. Ten times better than a gear review or any tour video.

@ijontichy9330 I’ll have to think of some topics I’d like to cover that I think would benefit people. Thank you for this input.
Thanks, much appreciated. I bought an Alpkit Ordos 2 months ago... they said they might deliver it 2 wks from now... we will see but shucks I was hoping buying from a UK company would be smoother.

I hope when it arrives it’s worth it. They’re probably waiting for it to arrive from the manufacturer. You’d better tell me when it arrives, I’ll be on edge!
Strangely enough my cheapest tents give me the most pleasure and I use them the most while my more expensive tents apart from one of them really disappoint me. So don’t be envious if someone else has spent more.

That’s a great point.
Old gear shows you’re experienced. New gear shows you’re an inexperienced newbie. 👍

Certain ones. Aye. But to be honest, the video could have been a sling as your comment really couldn’t it. ‘Influencers’ are to blame!
