    @@leahcim38 Understand! I've replaced the consumable parts in the couplers on my hoses several times. But this time the hose its self is what failed. I did keep the old hoses and will make a temporary repair to the red hose, for emergency use.

    They are identical to what I had for 20 years. They are Yellow Jacket hoses, with the auto-shutoff couplers as shown in the link below. I got them at a local HVAC supply place in Tuscaloosa called Wittichen Supply. The red hose blew on my previous video about the International Harvester freezer LOL! www.zoro.com/yellow-jacket-manifold-hose-set-low-loss-connection-size-14-in-female-45-deg-angle-number-of-hoses-3-60-in-l-22985/i/G4261923/

    @@davida1hiwaaynet Wow,, great minds !! I went Googling earlier and have those in my Amazon cart as we speak.. I started out looking for 72" hoses like I used to carry when I ran service but I don't really need those anymore... Those $30 Chinesium sets are tempting but I know better...

    What refrigerant are you using. Looks like r152a?

    Yes, I use R152A in these. It's well proven on the GE Scotch Yoke machines.

    @@davida1hiwaaynet According to wikipedia, SO2 boils at -10C but R152A boils at -25C so it has a much higher vapor pressure, I am surprises the compressor doesn't blow up

    @@atmel9077 The pressure is higher but it is well within the capabilities of these systems. There is more to a refrigerant aside from the boiling point at atmospheric pressure.

    Are you using r134a?

  • @peterfaggella3120

    I had no idea that was a replacement for the original refrigerant.

    No, definitely not R134A. That is incorrect for these units. They were SO2 units. The original replacement for SO2 was R114; which was then phased out for R124. That is now phased out as well. The replacement I am using is R152A. It is not a universal SO2 replacement but it works extremely well in Monitor Top units.

    Cool to know. I saw a generic looking modern refrigerant can and assumed it was R134a. Didn't know they made small cans of other refrigerant. Keep doing what you're doing! @@davida1hiwaaynet

    What Freon are you using. 134 A? Also did you replace oil in compressor with PAG?

  • @davida1hiwaaynet

    @davida1hiwaaynet

    Hello Pat. The refrigerant is R152A. The oil is original. It's a proprietary mineral oil GE used back in the day. It can be replaced with alkylbenzene oil but never POE as that will swell and damage some of the natural materials used in the compressors from this era. These units are not designed for a refrigerant / oil combination which mix together. GE learned this trying to use Freon-12 and mineral oil in these, and ended up staying with SO2 to mitigate the oil and refrigerant mixing.
