Combination Front Load Steam Washer & Condenser Dryer

model # GFQ14ESLSNOWW
it seems a major complaint about this machine is that it won't dry queen size sheets, that it takes 6 hours to dry them, but those who make this complaint fail to realize that is what times dry is for. you just set it for another 30 minutes and usually it's dry. Another complaint was that it didn't deal with pet hair well. We have a dog that sheds and we haven't found the machine full of hair after washing dog blankets. we also sometimes wash other pet things in it and it does amazing at washing these items.

I’ve had this this for 4 years now. And I can give it probably the most honest review. And all the people that say it will randomly stop drying- YES IT WILL. if you are mechanically inclined, it’s not a big deal. But if you are the type person that trashes something or calls a tech, this thing will be a total pain for you. I wouldn’t buy it if that’s the case. I bought it because we had a very small laundry closet. And we wanted to save space and make a storage shelf by eliminating the dryer. However, after about 7 months use. It stopped drying. Bear in mind- it’s very small unit and even when working properly you are only suppose to fill the tub half way for it to normally dry otherwise airflow won’t circulate. That being said it’s pretty much used daily for us, the clothes we wear in a day is a full load. In to why it stops drying. Unlike a traditional gas dryer like we had before; where the dry air is brought in heated up, circulated absorbing the moisture then vented out. This thing has a condenser. The air is brought in picks up the moisture then passes through a condenser which is a plastic tank. That plastic tank a one of the 4 cold water valves which is the low flow valve which constantly trickles wanted down the edges of the plastic tank as it’s drying to cool and condense the moisture to dry the air so it can be put back in the tumbler and do the same process picking up more moisture and repeating over an over till the clothes are dry. Now there’s a lot of factors that can lead this thing to not dry but one is probably the most common. 1. I had my low flow cold valve go bad. Unfortunately I had to buy the unit with all 4 valves because you can’t just replace 1. It was a 65$ part from GE. To test the valves you measure the resistance. The unit comes with a service sheet but ironically it’s inside the unit and you have to take the face plate off to get to it. But it can be done with common tools. 🧰. It lists the Ohms for testing the valves. 2. The most common. Lint build up. This is the leading cause for this to stop drying. That plastic condenser tank I mentioned above. 👆 lint will stick to the sides of the tank. And over time it builds up so much that the lint causes the tank to stay moist and the air can never get to a dry point as it’s cycling. So it will run the whole cycle and you’ll feel your clothes and they will be hot and wet. To fix this it’s a matter of simply cleaning the tank. You have to pull the face plate, then take the top off, expose the top of the tank and then you literally just pull all the fluff build up out of the tank and then use a skinny vacuum flex attachment to get the area of the tank you can’t fit your hand in. As your doing it it makes sense as to why it won’t dry because the lint is sopping wet. 3. The next thing is to why it won’t dry is, a bad heating element. That’s fairly easy to test and get to with common tools as well. Mine hasn’t gone bad yet and it’s been 4 years. There’s a few other things that can cause dry issues but they are where you’d probably consider trashing this unit. Another thing to note is, once a month you do need to open that little trap door and drain the water from the little hose and clear any debris from the little filter. So if you don’t mind doing monthly maintenance with draining, and knowing roughly every 6-12 months you are gonna be taking apart the unit to clean the condenser (which I’ve got down to a science now and it takes about 30 mins) it’s not a bad machine. But if you are expecting to buy this, and have it work perfect for years on end worry free. DONT BUY.

@@betsychadney1084 it’s really not that bad, it helps if you have an impact driver or a drill with a Phillips attachment. Doing it with just a screw driver will really add time. Start by unplugging the power. Then sliding out the soap drawer. Push down on the tab that will let you slide the drawer completely out and set it aside. Then you’ll see screws surrounding the drawer, take those off and set them aside and try to keep track of which ones go where (take pictures as you go). Then you have to pull off the face plate with the electric screen which is held by screws and plastic push tabs you pop out. Once it’s free you can leave the electrical connections plugged in and hang it on the side or you can un plug them and set it aside. (If you unplug take note of which one plugged whereas they are both the same connection.) One the drawer is out and the faceplate/screen is off. There should be screws you see that hold the top cover on. Take those out, then the top cover should slide back and lift off exposing the inside of the unit. When you get that far let me know and I’ll try and keep explaining the next steps.

Okay, I did all that but once I exposed the inside I got intimidated:(. Found the “extra instructions with diagram of how the condenser works. Pretty straightforward but didn’t remove any screws from the top. Btw, I really appreciate the help.

@@betsychadney1084 ok, so you have to identify the condenser, the most common thing that causes this to stop drying is all the fluff and lint that builds up inside. Don’t be intimidated, it’s essentially just unscrewing more stuff just keep track of what you do. One thing to test before you take more apart would be testing the valves. Because if the condenser valve goes bad and won’t send water (which happened to me once) that will make it stop drying too. You can use a multi-meter to test the valves and the spec sheet lists the ohms for testing it. Or the spec sheet also shows how you can turn the unit on and run diagnostics to test the valves. But again it’s probably the fluff build up that’s the most common cause for the not drying. So identify the tank, it’s in the back right corner and it’s a plastic tank. It is located under the blower motor which is circular. To access the top of the condenser tank you have to first take off the metal cross memeber bracket should be like 4 screws. Set it aside. Then you have to take off the blower duct which is flat and long looking black in color. It’s like 6 screws on each side and a couple screws also have terminal leads connected to the heater elements, just unscrew them all and BE CAREFUL not to drop them. When the screws are removed, then it should pop off and be careful of the gasket try not to rip it. Clean out any fluff in the duct or on the heater elements, then get to the blower motor and clean and fluff out of that or on the fan blades. Sometimes you have to use a little pick to scrape the grooves of the fan blades. Then remove it and you’ll see the top hole of the condenser tank. If you have small hands you’ll be able to reach and grab a lot of the fluff in the tank that’s built up. Then what you can’t reach you’ll have to use a flexible vacuum attachment or a flexible claw and get the tank as fluff free as possible. Once it’s clean put it all back together. If you don’t see much fluff in there then it is probably something else. But 8/10 times it’s the fluff build up that prevents the drying.

You can't open it during the dry cycle. Because it has a sensor inside it, it will shut off when it senses the clothes are dry. If they aren't dry, then you can set it for a timed dry for another, at the least, 30 mins.

You cannot stop it in the middle of a cycle. If you want to add clothes it needs to be paused near the beginning of the cycle. It will always stop when the clothes are dry because it has a sensor in it to detect when the clothes are ready. Sometimes the clothes make still be a bit damp when it stops due to steam settling, so just add another 30 mins on the timed dry setting and it will either take 30 mins or less to finish the dry. Hope this helps.
