    Tbf I like lots of people thought that it was “gol lazio” This program partly contributed to me learning Italian! I can say that what’s said is “golazo” which essentially means amazing goal! James Richardson was the perfect presenter for this channel 4 classic from the 90’s!

    Awesome programme. Loved the bit when the referees pranced on screen in sync to the music beat. Brings me back to my youth does this show, Saturday & Sunday watched it religiously. James Richardson was epic presenter.Would love to see this be re-instated one day to channel 4.

    It was in the 1990's, as no other league came close. The quality, the players, the spectacles, the stadiums - especially the cathedral-like San Siro. Can still picture the tickertape, the massive banners and flags, and of course the noise of firecrackers going off....and those flares! By comparison, the premiership was nowhere, while La Liga was distinctly second to Serie A. Someone supposedly threw a lambretta from the top tier of the San Siro back in the early 90's......was this true!??

  • @Havencheese

    @Havencheese

    Rob Tyman answering your question from all of 5 years ago, yes I believe it to be true. I read a book years ago called 'Calcio' and that story is in it. From memory it was a protest by Inter ultras against the owners at the time. They somehow got it into the stadium.

    Yep we were, English football was nowhere near Serie A in the 90s and we had this absolute banger ringing out every weekend. I was a kid in the 90s and used to watch this religiously. Everyone had an Italian team at school, mine was Lazio just because I am from Manchester and they play in the same colour as us. Plus everyone thought it was “Goal Lazio!” at the end of this intro, so scoring on the playground and shouting that was class.

    It was in seen as the best league in England and by all of Europe in the 1990's until about 1999 when Dortmund, Man Utd and Madrid had all knocked out Juventus and won the Champions League and the dominance of Italian teams finally died in 1999.

    Gazzetta was really the show. Platt was criminally underrated in England. Look at his goalscoring ratio everywhere he went and for England. For a midfielder it's unreal, and in Italy too against tough defences. Sunday matches were a bit boring as a kid cos you didn't really get it, but didn't stop me watching my Roma - Giannini, Totti, Aldair, Balbo, Rizzitelli (every time I say that name I think of Kenneth Wolstenholme saying it). I grew up on this and although I loved Platt and the Sampdoria kit, I just clicked with Roma. Weird. I really wish C4 could get some highlights package, even if it's on a Sunday morning (Going against Soccer AM which still gets a decent share, no matter how much it's gone down hill wouldn't be clever) from the last week and just talk Italian football, against all those Morning kitchen programs, this would be something worth watching. I guess we all need to love the fact we grew up with it in the first place! :)

    scarafoo Sky launched in the UK in 89'. Before then there was only 4 channels on UK TV. Sky were subscription so not many had it. They showed foreign leagues like Serie A, Bundesliga etc but like I say few had access to it. The only football you got live in the UK was World Cups, Euros, some big league games, the cup games and finals. Sky bought over the English 1st division TV rights in 93' and relaunched it as the Premiership. They gave up the Italian and other foreign leagues. Channel 4 bought them because Gazza had gone to Lazio and everyone was interested to see how he'd get on. 3 million people would tune in every Sunday because Italy had the best players at the time. It was much slower with less goals but more skillful. You could finally see all these great players you had only read about before in magazines. The novelty wore off after a few years but the memories remain. Channel 4 also had a really fresh approach. They did loads of sketches and jokes during the show. The football analysis on Sky and BBC is always very serious.
