GATEWAY COLORADO: A BROKEN MOTORCYCLE and a scenic ride on the DOLORES TRIANGLE SAFARI ROUTE

Always trouble! Find out what was wrong with my motorcycle, ride the scenic Dolores Triangle Safari Route from Utah to Colorado with me and enjoy a stay in Gateway Colorado - including a visit to the famous Gateway Auto Museum with a collection of american cars!
Traveling is about accepting the challenges along the way. It’s the choice to keep moving, no matter how big or unexpected the obstacles are. We chose to move forwards, to leave Moab and travel to beautiful Gateway in Colorado, where we visited an amazing auto museum and explored the surroundings on the back of a horse. But even leaving Utah was more difficult than expected - because my Yamaha Tenere refused to start.
Due to the unexpected foot injury, our plans changed several times - we were not able to stay in Moab any longer because everything was booked, so our new travel companion decided to first drive back the rental bike of my injured travel partner to the next rental place in Grand Junction Colorado - and we would all leave Moab on different ways and meet again in the small town Gateway to spend two more days together before our paths finally would separate.
While the other rider of our group dropped the motorcycle at the rental place, I had to deal with some new issues. The broken switch of the sidestand of my Yamaha Tenere 700!
It was Sunday morning, all shops were closed and I needed a solution for this problem. I watched several KZread Videos - and decided that my motorcycle needs a little surgery.
Afterwards I took off from Moab and I followed Highway 128, which went on a beautiful curvy road along Colorado river. And turned off on the beginning of La Sal Loop Road.
To reach the town Gateway in Colorado you don’t follow the paved La Sal Loop though, but continue on the so called Doloroes Triangle Safari Route aka Gateway Road, that soon turns into a packed gravel road. Enjoy views on Fisher Mesa, Bull Canyon and John Brown Canyon.
If you want to know why Gateway is so special and see some amazing american cars of the Gateway Auto Museum tune in - we will as well change perspective and exchange the 75 hoursepower of my Tenere to 1!

I have lived in Colorado since the 50's and roamed the West on motorcycles, and in cars and trucks. I've never made this ride although I've studied the roads of the La Sal Mountains in recent years on Google Earth. The first time I came through Gateway was around 40 years ago traveling north on 141, beautiful lonely highway with maybe one car every 4 or 5 miles, Gateway was a curve in the road with large Cottonwood trees full of caterpillar nests. I was retuning from my 2nd "Grand Circle" motorcycle tour, great memories of a very special region. You do a great job of filming, editing and using your drone, I love following along on Google Earth and pin pointing the locations. For an old timer whose riding days are past, it's amazing to be able to "ride along" with you and others to places I've never dreamed of seeing.

Thank you so much for this nice comment! I wish I would have seen what you experienced 40 years ago - it must have changed a lot (but then I sometimes think in places like gateway and the nature maybe (or hopefully) not too much changed at all).

Thank you so much for this huge compliment! I think that each channel has their own approach - some manage to post several times a week, that’s a lot of work and of course you can’t be as precise with the editing then as if having a “slower” pace like I do. So all has its advantages - I kind of chose to put more time in the editing but therefore as well let you guys wait week after week for a new episode 😅.

I'd like to thank you for this video. I just got back from an eight day motorcycle tour from Colorado through Southern Utah, and we rode the Dolores Triangle Safari Route because of this video. It was stunning and a highlight of the trip for me. We left Moab around 9 am and the views of the rock along 128 were amazing. The best part of the route for me was dropping down into Gateway on the last section into the canyon. I'm so glad we decided ride this road, and thank you again for sharing.

Got2Go Lea- 15 minute vids are not long enough! Great job capturing so many scenic wonders. I know editing these isn't easy, but hey....we would like more 😁. Someone commented that fixing the sidestand problem was as equally impressive as finding the $3M car. I commented that finding that bike was equally impressive, if not more so. Oh well, I am still interested if you decide to sell it! Even with that terrible, awful, hopelessly misconfigured/bypassed kickstand wire! Congrats on getting her going again. Looks like you kept in mind that the bike would start (and travel) with the side stand in the down position. Wonder how many times an hour I would have checked that it was up! Great video and looking forward to the next.

  • @Got2Go

    @Got2Go

    2 жыл бұрын

Hahaha, and I thought after all these videos nobody would want to buy the bike anymore anyways 😂. But: my bypassed kickstand wire was fixed highly professional! You know that we are very gifted engineers here in Germany 😂😂😂. But I will still keep her until next year, somehow I hope that I can do some more riding then! Funnily I didn’t have a problem with putting up the side stand at all - I always do it like an automatism to bring the bike in riding position, get the side stand up and then start it. But I was worried too in the beginning 😂

I'm from the Albuquerque NM area and had started a planned 4 full riding days in the Moab-ish area, starting Sat 6/11/22, and this was to be my first route. After that I'd planned to head to Ouray CO on Wed 6/15/22, and then ride a full day there around Ouray to Telluride via the Last Dollar road. I have a 2021 KTM Adventure R, and was ready to go. I started feeling sick Friday, coughing, couldn't sleep, felt like shit but was determined to press on Saturday, not knowing what it was. I pretty much did this same route, maybe a mite different, as my Gamin Zumo XT ALSO completely lost it's mind in about that exact same area! I got to the (somehow truncated) end of the track that I'd loaded, and even though it SHOWED me that Gateway was only maybe 10-15miles away, it insisted on giving me 2 different options that were a 100mile route to Gateway! I just pushed on in the general direction, and eventually I got to the road that took me to John Brown Canyon. While I won't call it "technical", some of the downhill areas ARE pretty steep, and even though there aren't big ledges or rocks or ruts (at least when it is dry) on the road, it's hardpack with a layer of peagravel on top so it's like riding on ball bearings. In some areas I was literally in 1st gear in many places, constantly tapping the ABS rear brake trying not to gather too much speed and go over the edge. The front washed out on me badly once around a downhill hairpin and I had to stomp my right foot down to save it. The KTM is definitely more capable than I am, and it was surprisingly little actual drama. A little "stomp-n-go". So, caution, in some cases the road is a LOT tougher than it looks with that layer on top, as there's about zero traction in many places, at least the day I was on it. Made it to the bottom, sweating in the 100deg heat. When I got there, I was so sick and feeling worn out, I decided against trying to make it up that hill and back the way I came, and decided to take the safer paved route (WAY longer) back to my motel room in Monticello Atomic Blue Motor Inn), South on Hwy 141, that beautiful twisty and scenic road. Well, it was one miserable ride home from the perspective of how I felt. I was literally wanting nothing more than to be off the bike, for one of the only times in 40+ years of riding in some absolutely insane conditions. I felt like total shit, hot, sweaty, coughing, dizzy, and weak. Got back to the hotel, couldn't sleep all night for coughing constantly, and having trouble breathing. Went to the little hospital ER in Monticello (yes, there is a tiny hospital there, thankfully, so FYI for y'all) for a COVID test...aaaand that's why I was feeling so sick in all the heat. I was positive. They gave me the monoclonal antibody shot (expensive, but actually PAID for by the state of UT, so you just pay for the administration of it), and a Dexamethasone (steroid) shot, and I felt better just hours later. Because I was COVID+ I was able to get my money refunded for the $700 in future hotel room fees there and the hotel in Ouray, so, Monday I rode the 290miles back to NM. It was a great, scenic ride, I just wish I could have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been so sick. I can't complain too much because in decades of riding, this is the first time I've ever had to cancel, and I got all my unused money back, and was able to work from home this week so I didn't use up any vacation. I got home in one piece without hurting myself or bike because of being too ill to control it, so, I'm calling that a win regardless, it could have been a lot worse. Sorry for the long-winded post, but hopefully some of these tidbits can help others in a similar situation. Ride within your limits, ESPECIALLY if you're not feeling well, no sense in getting REALLY hurt because you're stubborn or egotistical and "have" to do something. Get home safe. Great vids as always, keep up the good work, and maybe I'll see you on the trails around here someday. Dunno if you have done this, but if you feel safe in doing so, posting future ride routes and dates would allow us fans a chance to ride with you if you'd like. Be well, ride safe folks!

Brilliant stunning scenery, electronic failures on today’s electronic motorcycles my biggest dread when I am out on the road. Funnily enough because the kick stand ‘cut out’ is in such an exposed position is always my first suspicious thing to examine, also the O2 sensor as it is again in the elements, and first appeared after I forced a river.
