Gateway, CO to Moab, Utah via John Brown Canyon, North Beaver Mesa, Thompson Canyon and Onion Creek. An amazing run on desert roads with no pavement and incredible scenery. We ran this in a mostly stock Xterra, and mostly in 2wd. We used 4lo for speed control on some hills.

If you wanted to stretch this out as an overnight, how are the camping opportunities? Could a highly capable overland/off-road trailer make it on this without too much trouble? Sorry if you answered in the narration, I had to watch with volume down. Cool video, thanks for sharing!

Thank you! There isn't much developed camping along the way, but there is quite a bit of BLM land. Before you get to Gateway there are some cool spots off 141 in Colorado, especially Jacks Canyon and Big Dominguez Campground on the Uncompahgre Plateau. Once you get to the Onion Creek area there are the Upper and Lower Campgrounds, and if you took John Brown Canyon to La Sal Mtn road and then to Sand Flats- I have another video called Moab to Gateway that show that- there are some nice campgrounds at the west end of Sand Flats that don't get as much use as the ones closer to Fins n Things & Hells Revenge (which are also great). Camping around Moab is tough in general these days- google "Moab Overcrowding". Too much love... I have a homemade offroad trailer that I would not hesitate to take here, but I currently have a bandaid on my hand where I cut myself in the same stupid, avoidable way for the third time this year. I really don't have any advice for you, just that I'd be dumb enough to try it. The only parts that might be tough would be going up and down the hills and some tight shelf sections between North Beaver Mesa and Onion Creek. Trailer brakes would be a plus and low range would probably handle the hills, IDK. we found all of this to be easy. I saw a few trailers on La Sal and Sand Flats, didn't see any on North Beaver Mesa, Thompson Canyon or Onion Creek. hth.

Thabks for the video! How long would you say it takes to drive from Gateway to Moab?

Thank you! If you look at the lower left corner of the video you can see the duration. Our drive time was about 4.5 hours, about 5 hours to Moab proper. Add time for stops, it's a gorgeous drive.

What camera did you use on to film this with the map overlays and coordinates? I love the fact that it also captured elevation and grade!

Is this route typically open and driveable in April? We're going to be heading to Moab around April 11th.

It should be open as long as it hasn't rained or snowed recently. You can reach out to the Gateway Canyons Resort Store and ask them about conditions, they are really nice people and it's a great place to stop before hitting the desert; gateway-store-gateway.edan.io/

Great video, now I have a good idea of the road conditions. We are planning to do this driving from Telluride to Moab. Is it possible to do this in a rental car? Type Santa Fe all wheel drive or suburban? I know it's a bit of a risque, but if you don't want to take risks, you have to drive interstate all the way during vacation. So can it be done?

I would do it, but I can't tell you what to do... but I would. Do not go if it's rained within 48 hours or so, the bentonite is unpassable by a tank when wet, hard like a road when dry. John Brown Canyon is the easiest part, so if you get past that and decide you've had enough look at 12:13 in the video- you can take La Sal Mtn road (paved) to Castle Valley Road (paved) to Moab instead of Beaver mesa to Onion Creek. If you do that I'd still check out Onion Creek from Moab, it's incredible and you'll start to recognize it in car commercials. Have fun! Interesting! I do believe it would be wide enough the whole way, and I don't remember any large bumps or holes that might hang you up. This area is maintained for resource extraction so large trucks go through it all the time. John Brown Canyon would be no problem, I saw a truck with a horse trailer there. There are some shelf sections in the area where Thompson Canyon ends and Onion Creek begins, one or two spots might be too narrow to pass another vehicle. I have another video up called Moab To Gateway that uses John Brown Canyon, La Sal Mtn Rd and Sand Flats rd, you would have no problems along that route, IMO. If you do it please post a video of it!!

I've been planning to drive solo from Boulder to Grand Junction to Gateway and then to arches national park. The 170 alone makes me cringe at times...would you this is a scary drive at all?

We drove this whole route in 2wd in our Xterra, no issues at all. It's easy if it's dry, but it's more about where you are than what you're doing. The whole route is gorgeous, quiet, and Onion Creek is epic. Have fun!!
