GATES TRAINING: Alternator Decoupler Pulley - How to Inspect and Replace (full version)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Did you know that some solid alternator pulleys have been replaced by a patented pulley technology that is an important part of the drive system design? These new high tech alternator decoupler pulleys (ADP) allow the belt to power the alternator during acceleration and cruising speed, but DECOUPLE or disengage from the alternator during engine deceleration. yes, what a stupid design; to save 30 bucks you spent 600 in labour as most of the alternators are deep inside the engine bay and you spend a lot of time removing almost half engine bay components to get it out. Was nothing wrong with the old design, lasted 200k km plus.

    this video was amazing and helpful, i am going the rout with replacing the whole alternator since its been giving some weird issues for a little while now. But the pulley is deffinetly bad, it buzzed for atleast 10 seconds after engine shutdown and puffed out a bug cloud of rus, which is now in a pile on the driveway, huge fan of gates. i work for oreilly auto parts and always urge customers to spend the extra few dollars for gates products :)

    I totally concur with emigrate. I've just replaced the timing belt on my Renault Laguna 2.2. This I did as a routine measure during the vehicles recent refit (...which included a clutch and CSC upgrade..). When I removed the OEM tensioner, not only was it made of plastic (...like the CSC or 'throwout bearing' as you Americans call em... ), but it was also fractured ! The idler pulley was also plastic and its bearings were rough .... When I received the Gates kit, I was gratified to find that the pulleys were metal and really looked well made. The old timing belt had obviously been replaced with a Gates belt, but they'd left out the pulleys.... Bad idea. So it was a good job that I decided to check the timing belt system, for with that fractured pulley, things would have gone way beyond FUBAR in the not too distant future. Gates deliver excellent products. . What I am now embarking on, is an alternator upgrade. I shall be using a Mercedes 200 amp unit. What I want to know is that Gates stipulate that their ADP's are OEM specific... But this does not make sense to me. Most auxiliary belts (serpentine belts) drive, from crankshaft pulley, via a tensioner pulley and maybe an idler pulley to alternator, perhaps steering pump and a/c compressor. Occasionally a water pump may be on the aux belt. I fail to see why ADP's are therefor so 'specific' to manufacturer. My belt drives, alternator, steering pump and a/c comp... Nothing more.... So what is the problem with me fitting an ADP to my Mercedes alternator, which in turn will be fitted to my Renault?

  • @GatesNorthAmerica

    @GatesNorthAmerica

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Deebz270 We call them OEM specific because they are designed to replace an OEM part and are not designed to be universal in fitment. Additionally the belt drive system is designed as a complete unit so the tensioner and ADP are matched from the OE. If a vehicle has an ADP, the tensioner will be running at a lower spring tension since the ADP takes most of the abuse. If an ADP is fitted to a drive that was unequipped with one from the OE, issues may arise from an incompatible setup; this is not something we’ve tested. We do not recommend since the different types of alternator pulleys are not interchangeable.

    one more question about the clutched pulley.. i just had mine changed (plus bearings) due to a vibrating sound right after i release the throttle after bringing it to almost redline. will the delay be noticeable enough to hear? my problem is i can still hear the vibration (which seems to be coming from the alternator) after i blip the throttle. it runs smooth and silent during idling though. your thoughts?

    I know this is an old post but I have never heard of these pulleys either. I have a 05 dodge caravan with the 3.3L V-6 and the engine is making a weird noise and I was told, why I found this vid, to check that pulley. My question is, can this pulley going bad cause alternator issues such as flickering dash lights and sudden drops in idle when slowing down for red lights?

  • @GatesNorthAmerica

    +MrCougar214 That noise would be the alternator decoupler pulley failing and causing the alternator light. Gates offers a replacement pulley whereas the dealer would make you buy a complete alternator.

    I picked up this pulley from Rock auto and the cover was missing and they called Gates and they just delivered it less than 24 hours later. That is good service. I installed the pulley in less than an hour on the car. I only had one to replace so I wanted to rent the tool that no one had. O"Reilly had one that they would rent for 115 deposit till I got there and then they wanted to sell it to me. I went to another O'Reillys and talked them into ordering it and then loaning it to me. The next day I used it . I will use that store and never set foot in the other. I ordered a simple tool from AutoZone in case I needed it for 24 dollars. If you are in business fixing cars get the Gates one I just couldn't afford it right now. I you want to know the sound it makes when bad go to KZread and look up Chrysler sounds and that was how I found the noise. Gates makes the best products so shop around and find a supplier that carries their parts

    I have a 2008 dodge Avenger with a 2.4 liter 4cyl. I have a "heavy whirring" sound that has started in the engine compartment. After consulting a "pro" he suggested I replace the belt tensioner which I did along with the lower idler pulley which was making a little noise as well. The upper idler pulley was fine. I also replaced the belt. After doing these things the noise is reduced by about 50% but is still very present. Could it be the alternator or alt pulley? Maybe the power steering pump? I

    +Seth Andrews Hi Seth, Thanks for contacting Gates. To answer your question, thedecoupler pulley should spin freely in one direction, but should drive the alternator’s rotor in the other direction. As a result, you should feel no drag and the pulley should spin freely in one direction, but you should feel some drag and the alternator internals should spin along with the pulley in the other direction. If your pulley freewheels in both directions, or is locked to the alternator rotor in both directions, then the pulley has failed and needs to be replaced. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our technical team at (303) 744-5651 or apateam@gates.com.

  • @GatesNorthAmerica

    @GatesNorthAmerica

    8 жыл бұрын

    +351cleavland Alternator decoupler pulleys are extremely important to the overall health of the accessory belt drive system, and can greatly contribute to belt wear and noise. The reason is that many ADPs contain a damping spring that actually absorbs some of the engine vibrations induced into the belt drive system. Therefore, when an ADP fails, the tensioner is left to absorb these additional vibrations. The result then becomes premature tensioner failure, which will lead to premature belt failure and reduced accessory component performance. ADPs are becoming ever more prevalent as they increase the overall fuel mileage of the vehicle. +armando sanchez The 2005 Dodge Caravan uses an AD, overrunning alternator decoupler pulley. The other type of pulley is an OWC which stands for one way clutch. Both have similar functions but one cannot be used in place of the other. The Gates line of decoupler pulleys are OE Exact and we have the proper type of replacement pulley listed for each application.

    Hi @mocky1220. Our ADP line includes both one-way clutch (OWC) and overrunning alternator decoupler (OAD) pulleys. Do not replace an OAD with an OWC or the other way around and DO NOT use a solid pulley in place of either the OAD or OWC. The tensioners, pulleys and belt in the accessory belt drive system were designed for long lasting performance, and changing any of these components with non-OE spec. parts will dramatically reduce durability and will result in early failure of the accessories.

    Long lasting performance , lol . That's the biggest joke of the all. These things are failing faster than any other part on these cars ! If they were truly long lasting this would not be happening sooner than my cars without them. I have cars with over 200,000 miles with the original alt with out the , long lasting junk over run decoupler .just another case of the manufacturers greed for making more money !!

    So this increases the life of the belt and tensioner by how much?

  • @GatesNorthAmerica

    @GatesNorthAmerica

    7 жыл бұрын

    The car manufacturers are moving to the alternator decoupler pulley for several reasons. Increase in belt, tensioner and accessory life is one of the reasons and each application is different. Applications with 4-cyl engines and diesel engines will have better results using an ADP over 8-cyl engines. ADP’s are designed for each application, part numbers are not interchangeable nor is it advised to replace an alternator originally equipped with a solid pulley with an ADP.

    This Gates how-to-video makes it look so easy to replace the ADP. All you have to do is purchase the specialty tool set for $80 - $120 and the problem is solved. NOT! Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are some alternators that don't have a center hole by which to secure the inner tool on the amateur shaft So there is no apparent way by which to remove the pulley without doing the alternator some serious damage. Buyer beware. Save yourself a lot of time and money, inspect the inner armature shaft on your alternator first before ordering an Alternator Decoupler Pulley and an ADP tool set. Here is my experience attempting to replace an ADP with a Gates ADP and their custom toolset on a Nissan Altima with a QR25 engine. kzread.info/dash/bejne/p42arLmDqN2nmdY.html

    +DIY Guy Thank you for your comment. We are sorry to hear about the troubles you experienced with our products. It is true that some alternators require a different procedure to replace the decoupler pulley, but each ADP we sell can be replaced. Furthermore, while we do not specify exactly which socket to use for each application as alternator design can change even when the pulley does not, our included instructions will always state the procedure to follow. In the case of your Nissan, we recently discovered that we were not including the ideal instruction sheet with the pulley. As a result, we have since updated our instructions for this particular part. On this application, the pulley can be easily removed and installed using an impact wrench; it is not required to hold the armature shaft in place with this pulley. With that said, we apologize for the troubles you experienced, and our imperfect instruction sheet. Please contact us at apateam@gates.com so that we may make this right with you. Thank you.

    +Gates Auto Aftermarket Thank you for the response. I appreciate Gates Aftermarket the willingness to address and fix deficiencies in their product instructions. Which leads me to question why a lot of the fine details are left out of auto mechanics manuals everywhere to begin with. Removing steps in a procedure or assuming the end user logic is all the same, without side notes or explanations, can be very confusing for someone who encounters these things for the first time. Granted, most people nowadays are not equipped on how to work on their own cars, but if auto parts manufactures took a little extra time in preparation of their instructions, the auto owner would have enough information by which to make an informed decision on how they want to proceed with getting their vehicle fixed without the frustration of finding out that they need special tools to do so. Thank you.
