    Great video. I would suggest that you vacuum seal the filters in Mylar bags with a silica gel sachet and a small oxygen absorber sachet. From my limited understanding, the expiration date of a gas mask filter is based on two things: the degradation of internal glues and mechanical components like gaskets (unavoidable) and more importantly penetration of the wrapping by air which results in the activated carbon part of the filter becoming "spent". Normal plastic has a remarkably high amount of permeability. (If you dont believe me, bulk buy Kendal Mintcake and observe the room filling with the smell of peppermint penetrating the plastic wrappers!) Mylar is foil backed plastic ... I reckon fully vacuum packed in mylar most filters will last literally for decades beyond their stated end-life. Thanks again for the sound advice on gas masks

    Please make a video on when and when not to use a gas mask. I am a firefighter and know that many people would run into a smoke-filled room with only a gas mask on, thinking it would protect them. This is not true! It is important to always remember that those masks will only help if there's enough oxygen around, which is why we carry those big oxygen bottles on our back.

    Till Hirte Remember respirators (only called gas masks by civilians) only work against large chain molecules, such as nerve agents, CS, VX, Sarin.... It will also protect you against some chemicals that are given off by combustion (cyanides...). And as you point out if you are in an oxygen deficient environment it won’t work (no oxygen to breathe anyway). I’ve never heard any firefighter call their air bottles (tanks) oxygen bottles?

  • @techwg

    10:22 Something you failed to mention os that some filters that were made before the 60s usually have asbestos in them, can include chromium, and to top it off, covered in lead paint. In paticular, the russian gp-5 mask filters have thos problem. These masks absolutely do have an expiration date where the internal paper might degrade and allow the inhalation of these chemicals. Just a word of warning that I got while buying a gp-5 for the memes.

  • @yowtfputthemaskbackon9202

    @yowtfputthemaskbackon9202

    the GP5 is really just the most common mask with the problem, although technically their main issue isn't even the asbestos, its the fact that they are old masks that are simply not reliable. dangerous are really old masks (ww2 and earlier) or specialized systems like old rebreathers, those can contain toxic chemicals, and really should never end up on someones face.

    A lot of the military gear is not as good as some. A lot is a field-expedient kind of "good-nuff" kind of thing. Actual CBRN teams have far better protective gear than your regular soldier. That gear also takes a lot longer to put on compared to general NBC/CBRN field gear. I have seen average stuff and it's a 2 piece set of bottoms and a top. I have a couple sets of CBRN gear which consist of two one-piece coverall garments which must be worn at the same time, the under layer having rubber gaskets at the ankles, wrist and face for meeting with Butyl rubber ancillary equipment like overboots, gloves and respirators. But it all takes quite some time to get into, as those rubber seals are quite tight and it takes time to put on. Not good in an emergency situation you are already amidst.

They will not ( for instance) prevent mustard from burning your skin. Which is why they have full chem suits, and gloves. If chemical warfare were to really happen a gas mask won't save you for shit. Most gasses used today are lethal when in contact with the skin. You would have to wear a full body cbrn suit to survive a chemical attack in this day and age and putting one of those can take hours plus professional expertise since one small hole can kill you. CS gas from police use and fallout particles from nuclear warfare are the the only protection you'll get from a gas mask however if you are in the later case there are way worst things that you'll have to worry about. Radiation will be high and fallout will get stuck in your skin. You'll have to take a shower within minutes of being outside. At that point you are better inside your house, there you will be protected by all the problems that could come from nuclear warfare besides the initial fire blast but literally nothing can save you from that. In the case of CS use from the police then you can just get a good quality particle filter and you'll be far more comfortable than a gas mask.

It doesn’t hurt to be prepared, but don’t let it become a lifestyle. That’s a surefire route to stress and sadness. If the protest affects you you’re welcome to join and be a part of change, if not you can rest and wait until your voice is needed for the next part of progress. A lot of people stress the extremes of the protests, I’ve been there firsthand, it’s a lot of genuinely good people with concerns and ideas looking to change some aspects of our country and cities. another issue is usually that it creates leaks quicker than double eyepiece visors. it's mainly because of the different materials, the more sturdy plastic visor does not flex as well as the rubber mask does, the larger the inflexible bit is, the higher the chance of failure around its edges. so for survivability, a double eyepiece is preferable, for simple emergency use though, something like the Draeger Nova will be a lot more comfortable to use for most people. it's always a matter of what you want from it. you are inexperienced with gasmasks and need something to save your ass in an SHTF scenario: go with a fishbowl (the one-piece visor masks) you understand the basics of gasmask use and want something that won't fail you at any point? go with a normal binocular mask.

    Pretty newbie gas mask 101. A lot of important info was missed. I’ll save you some time. You don’t need an expensive high end mask. As long as the mask is comfortable, seals, has an oral nasal cup (to prevent digging) and a non asbestos containing filter, you’re good to go. My recommendation: buy a 90s gas mask and use a 40mm thread NATO filter. Stay away from old Soviet filters as they’re sketchy and most have asbestos in them.

    it depends on what you want it for, and also where you are from. generally, the best you can do is to get locally made gasmasks, since different nationalities have slightly different face types. if you are German, get an M65Z or a Draeger Nova if you are British, get an Avon Mask, of any type, they are all decent. if you are from eastern Europe, the Polish MP 5 should be considered. If you are American, go either with the current military ones or if you know your ancestry, go with what would fit them best. etc etc the next step is to understand what visor you want. you have a choice between reliability and comfortability. fishbowl masks, or the ones with a single large visor, are less reliable, more prone to failure, however, they work much better for people who are uncomfortable with cramped spaces, and are also much more child friendly. binocular masks, the ones with two eyepieces, are much more reliable, easier maintenance-wise, but come with the downside of being much less comfortable for inexperienced people. the idea of less visibility is a lie, you can see enough with both types. one just feels a lot more cramped than the other. then, comes the important bit, the filter. if you get a mask for smoke and fire protection, you would want a smoke-rated filter. if you want one as a prepper, get an NBC or ABC filter (both mean the same. "Nuclear-Biological-Chemical" and "Atomar-Biologisch-Chemisch" the other is just german.) if you just get one for work, dust filters are the way to go and also the cheapest. now to some other points. - strapped or helmet mask? straps are easier to replace and adjust, helmet masks make a better seal. - Voice diaphram or no Voice diaphram? it makes communication easier, but for a civilian, it really only introduces another point of failure. - Rectangular or Circular Binoculars? Rectangular. shut up avon nerds. - drinking tube or no drinking tube? anyone that has ever worn them for any considerable amount of time can agree, no drinking tube, it's an unnecessary annoyance constantly poking around your mouth. you're not supposed to spend days on end in a fucking gas cloud, so you won't need one. to put it in the words of a man from 4chan "stop shitposting and get out of the fucking gas chamber" (and then drink something like a normal person)

  • @linzenmeyer
    @linzenmeyer4 жыл бұрын

    The port in the middle is NOT for voice "amplification", there is a rubber flap that helps you exhale and not fog the crap up and seals up. The matching holes on both sides are where you will determine which side to install the filter. Why is this important? Because if you are a right handed shooter and have the filter installed on the right side, it WILL interfere with aiming a rifle. In basic training, we swapped the filter to our off-hand side and replaced the cap seal on the shooting side.

    MIRA sells surplus masks at a huge mark up. The CM-7M is actually a Czech OM-90 gas mask which is essentially an AVON S10 copy. You can find these masks at a more affordable pricec than what MIRA sells them for if you look around. Also in regards to the expiration for filters stated in the video. Yes the filters are paper HEPA filters with activated charcoal. These can in fact expire- as in the chemicals that the filter is treated with will decay over time and become less effective at filtration. That's not to say that expired filters won't work.. They just wont work as well as they would if they were in date.

    A very informative video however as you well know and you did mention the fact that the Israeli mask was a small. Please elaborate in another video how to determine the size of mask you need. I know on my dog tags we have our mask size listed for convenience. Also one must be clean shaven to really obtain a tight seal. A bit of WWII trivia, you know why Hitler had that paintbrush mustache? During WWI he was injured by a gas attack and his mask did not fit because of his large handlebar mustache thus the infamous paintbrush. I have seen some of the newer 3M full face masks for agricultural use however they are using a proprietary twist lock filter. It would be interesting if anyone knows of an adapter that would allow for the use of NATO filters. As mentioned in the comments below, people should know that a Gas mask will NOT protect them in an oxygen depleted atmosphere, instant suffocation.

    I went with a 3M full face respirator recently, I have an NBC suit and an Israeli mask but the 40mm filters are prohibitively expensive if you're trying to prep to last for any serious length of time... for biological threats like a pandemic P100 HEPA filters will do and they're a fraction of the cost of 40mm filters. They also take up much less volume and weight. The gas mask is for NBC bug out, the respirator and filters (I got 144 for less than $200) are for bug in

    Here's a tip. Not foolproof but in my own tests worked great. Take the rubber gasket from the cap of an FP5 filter (or other filter like the Israeli ones) and put it into the filter port of the GP5. This lets normal 40mm NATO filters get a better seal, as they don't need to screw in as far and they meet the rubber of the gasket that way and it provides a good seal. Not sure I would want it standing between me and VX lol but in a pinch for a prepper, it would be very effective.

    I have a couple of full face respirators and a bunch of half face respirators, mostly concerned with public order or riot control agents although just now it's more the abekp3 or N99 to prevent virus and other particulates which includes riot control agents 😏

    What about those sheets (usually 100-500mm plastic) that folk use to blacken out the visual for anyone trying to looking through glass panes, the two-way mirror effect, basically? You wipe the window with soapy water and smooth the sheet atop it and it sticks. You can see out, but they can't see in. I've seen them on _Aliexpress,_ _Wish,_ etc and I'm not 100% certain, but some may offer UVA & UVB protection, saving both your health and the longevity of the visor and all for a couple of bucks. Just an idea...

    You don't need a gas mask to protect you against the coronavirus, just an N91 mask of some sort with a respirator style being the best.

    Some Israeli gas masks (like mine) do have a drinking tube. You have to attach it onto your mask. That may be civilian or military but some do have drinking tubes. It comes with the straw , 40mm Israeli filter for about 25 dollars. Other then that great video

    I have a cheap Israel m15 and a more expensive forsheda A4. And both are great masks and work perfectly. Of corse the a4 is a bit better in some areas like field of view and weight, but both will save your life if a chemical accident where to happen. So unless you are buying a gas mask because you will acutely be using it or you are a collector, don’t spend that extra money.
