As a Liverpool fan I honestly have respect for Neville. One of the best right backs this country ever produced and when you see how well he has handled himself on and off the pitch as opposed to a certain Ryan Giggs, you realise how much of a giant he is.

Is it mad that as a dyed in the wool Liverpool fan (YNWA), I’ve developed a bit of a mancrush on Gary Neville??? What an engaging, personable, witty, intelligent and down to earth honest bloke he is. An absolute delight to watch and listen to, I could do it all day. And when he plays down his ability on the pitch, I think he’s doing himself a massive disservice, one of THE BEST players (nevermind in his position) that’s ever played the game, he must’ve been to have been at Manchester United for 25 years AND been first choice for club and country. What a top, humble guy he is, MASSIVE RESPECT!!!

Yes, it's true that nobody grows up dreaming of being Gary Neville, but once a player hits the first team, and start playing in defence, you can bet he has a whole lot to learn (end even more to win) before having any rights to even be compared to a great player like Gary.

Over the last 10 years I have listened to literally hundreds podcasts and interviews from around the world, as well as many multi-hour audio books. The honesty and raw vulnerability is captivating. I believe, I really do, that Gary will be the Man Utd manager when their next 'flight of the phoenix' era happens. All his experiences and life lessons are shaping his destiny for that role. That's from a Hammer of over 55 years supporting who also stood on the terraces at Old Trafford when they whooped the Irons 7 - 1 in 1999. The only points I got that day were 3 for speeding up the M1. Amazing work from both guys with very little post-editing too I would imagine from the flow of the conversation...

I’d gone off him with some of his punditry on mine and his club United. His conflicting business ventures & politics. Its seemed like he’s been loving the media limelight and pandering for views/retweets and seemingly lost touch from where he come from (which is also practically where I am from). But the setting you created allowed him to drop all the bullshit and just open up; really in touch with who he actually is behind the person he presents on Sky and social media. I agree but also disagree. I agree in the sense that United's history is bigger than any short-term success City are having, but I disagree in that if City build a solid foundation for continued success for 10, 20, 30 years, then nothing prevents them from gaining that history and status just like United have. But it will take time, for sure.

I've been a dedicated fan for 66 years - Busby babes / come back with Denis Law ( The King and my favourite ), Bobby Charlton ( World cup winner ) and Georgie Best ( who inspired the first European cup ) then famine for 26 years / enter Eric Cantona - SirAlex and then gluttony for the next 20 years / famine again...until Erik Ten Hag ! I am as convinced that Erik will bring us back as I was by Alex Ferguson's appointment back in 1986...background very similar ( Sir Alex success with Aberdeen and Erik with Ajax ) Just watch from now on. Ten Hag is EXACTLY what we NEED NOW ! This CR7 thing is not going to deter him in the slightest.

I really enjoyed this. The part that I picked up on which really bore relevance was ‘presence’. Meditation is now a necessity in this life as we achieve, consume, amass ....at the end of the day we can ‘cram everything in’ but I hope Gary realizes that no one will think any less of him if he stood back and bit and spent time just practicing ‘presence’ more. That’s ‘being’ not ‘doing’ all the time. Thank you.

What a great interview. It couldn’t have ended any better, as he’d mentioned so many individuals that had influence his life. As I listened to the interview I thought that he didn’t mention his Mum in the same way. Then Stephen asked that final question and the love and respect for his Mum just flowed out with the openness of that answer. An answer that showed a genuine honesty and vulnerability in acknowledging that he didn’t always show appreciation to his Mum that he wished he had. Also a big pat on the back for Stephen for listening to Gary’s replies and being able to bring out a side of him that many would never have seen before. Insightful and empathetic, yet still able to push Gary to really think about what made him tick and what were his core values that subconsciously sit under the surface, and make him the man he is today. The interview should be played to all young kids with aspirations to do anything in life and not just for Gary’s insight, but also from Stephens perspective too. One of the greatest things we can do is life, that can really help us to grow, Is the ability to listen, and then ask the right question. Which potentially enables us to take a quantum leap to a brighter future if we’ve thought wisely. Gentleman, I take my hat off to you, because you’re both outstanding individuals.

Can’t wait till Gary’s 50 ?, great interview. Very honest from both parts. I don’t vote Labour or have Gary’s views on politics, but I like him. So for a right back nearly off the pitch, he’s done alright. But I’d like to say he has nothing to prove, and sitting back isn’t a failure, it’s recharging the mind & soul. Enjoy the quiet lodge, if not in body but in mind.

Brilliant interview. And a brilliant interviewer able to ask insightful questions and then letting the interviewee speak at length. Gary's comments on leadership are interesting in that that he liked being told what to do by "the boss". That's exactly what Eddie Jones says in his autobiography on how the England rugby players he coaches respond best to instruction and that, in his experience, is a very English value. Eddie says nowhere else does anyone call the boss "the boss".

Gary Neville is a credit to Manchester United. Hard working and personable, he will continue to be a success. He mentioned his position as right back being a low level position, but he made this position great by his work ethic. I will say this however, in regards to his opinion of Manchester United's facilities, in that its not what would improve success at this stage. There is a term used in business coaching called "Kaizen", and is something I use in my own business coaching, which emphasises that good to great comes about by a cumulative process. Essentially, continuous improvement - doing the small things right every time. It's clear that Manchester United's team miss an influential leader on the pitch, but I believe that if they were to 100% utilise their current resources, they would begin to see positive change. Investing money at this stage in the infrastructure would be a waste. Look at Iceland beating England in the 2016 Euros! They did not have state of art training facilities. However, bringing in an influential Manager and on the pitch leader would be a more sound investment, as well as a business coach who is not affiliated with the club, and who has experience in incremental transformation. So often clubs throw money at short-term fixes, hoping for long-term results. It rarely works.

I came into this because I'm a United fan, I left with a piece of mind and understanding as a professional. I'm in my early 30s, I work relentlessly and I always believed I was doing it to help establish our young family. In the end though, I think part of the drive we have is that pull to want better. I also think it is the subconscious nervous energy that we don't want to fail. Not to fail our wife and kids, our family all of that. Since listening to this I have made a conscious effort to establish a better work life balance. I keep separate phones and once I'm done work phone is left by the computer and kind builds that wall of ok work is left here. We have to live in the moment and appreciate your loved ones while we have them. Don't miss the little moments, especially with kids because we can't hit rewind. So I came to this wanting to hear some interesting bit about United, I left with a piece of mind with how I can be better.

Gary Neville is a class act. I can’t believe I’ve just said that. But even as a die hard Liverpool fan it has to be said. I never knew about his humble background and about how it’s shaped his character and career. The way he talks about his dad is so moving. Beautiful in fact. I related a lot personally about what he said. I also admire how he uses his voice to express concerns about the mess our country is in right now. His position on workers rights and fairness in the work place is admirable and right. I wish more people of influence were like that rather than hiding behind there money and position. As a Man United ex player/fan he still has the honesty to give a rival club like Liverpool, credit where credit is due. As a player he was top class yet humble. No one plays for a team as good as United under a legend like Ferguson if you haven’t got the mettle for it. Brilliant all or nothing player. His commentary is always balanced and he and Carragher are Gold together. Fantastic interview. Mersey Christmas!! 🙏❤️.x
