Lumbergh LITERALLY was the personification (looks, mannerism, voice, all of it) of my first Corporate boss... minus the suspenders. This is an absolute TRUE story. The guy I'm referencing was our VP, and he received a Holiday meat-and-cheese tray from one of our vendors. This is going back 30+ years. Of course, he and the rest of Administration were on the ground floor. Shortly before 4:00, this guy - who could have been Lumbergh's twin - brought the tray upstairs and made an announcement. He said "We got this from XXXX, who - as you know - is one of our great partners. Anyway, I wanted to share it with the Engineering and Technical group.... so, Enjoy, and Happy Holidays." Then he placed the tray - which looked like it had been consumed by wild dogs - on one of the corner tables... and he left. This was WAY before cell-phones or cameras, but one of our engineers literally filmed him from the window, leaving the parking lot in his Mazda Miata (that oughta give you a time reference) and PEELING OUT into the street. If I live to be 150 years old, I'll never forget the Engineering Administrative Assistant picking up the tray, saying "Merry Christmas everyone", and dropping it into the garbage. The first time I watched Office Space, and saw the birthday cake scene, it was like I was in a time-machine. These people actually exist - or, at least, they used to. It's a different economy nowadays.

My brother worked for a small tech start up that morphed into a software giant back around the same time frame as this movie came out. The number two guy's background was in accounting and acquisitions and he looked, talked (and acted) like Lundbergh. He didn't have a clue when it came to day to day ops but he was always in the office gumming up the works, which did wonders for morale and efficiency. Great clip.

There is something very approachable and likeable about Gary Cole which he brings to all of his roles. Of course, Lumberg was perhaps his LEAST approachable character but, at the same time...we have ALL worked for a Lumberg. He said one sentence and was on the screen for 10 seconds and we are ALL thinking of that person we knew who was our own personal Lumberg. Acting requires all the personalities we can harvest from humanity and yet there is a singular appeal from Gary Cole that is indeed unique. Thank you so much for sharing this, AFI! :)

If you like Gary Cole I would recommend his earlier work in a weekly TV drama series called 'Midnight Caller'. Gary played the part of a San Francisco radio talk show host answering calls at night, and trying to help the callers in the day. The show dealt with some pretty hard-hitting stuff like reverse racism and losing people to aids, and it made great use of location shots of the bay area. It did however seem to lose track a little during the final season. To be honest it's one of the reasons I went there after watching the show and loved almost every minute; the city by the bay turned out to be everything I expected it to be and so much more..whether it's the same today I'm not so sure. I liked how Gary always seems to put his heart and soul into whatever he does, as if it were really him in that situation. His boss as played by Wendy Kilbourne was also pretty damn hot (man I wish I'd have met her for coffee in Frisco lol). I think Gary is a very versatile actor and a great guy both on and off the screen.

Yes! He was great in that! The first thing I ever saw him in was Fatal Vision, based on the real life murder of a pregnant woman & her 2 small children, most likely by her army surgeon husband Jeffrey MacDonald, who claimed that drugged hippies much like the Manson gang murdered them. He was a charismatic & attractive man, whose charm & intellect hid a mountain of pathologies, drug abuse & narcissism. Even his father-in-law was his biggest defender until he began to see his version of events had serious consistencies. Cole did a brilliant job of playing a man for whom image is everything & who was capable of mimicking empathy & hiding his sociopathy behind the facade he had created. I flip-flop all the time on Mac Donald's guilt, & I did so watching this movie. Cole made you understand how some people would swear Jeff was not capable of such horrors, while others were able to see him as a monster. When an actor creates the same kind of conflicted feelings about the person he is portraying, that is some serious acting chops. Like Christian Bale in American Psycho, the more I saw of Cole's MacDonald, the less I felt I knew the 'real' him. Don't know if the tv movie is easy to track down, but if anyone wants to see a great early role for Gary Cole, if you do come across it it's worth checking out.

Cole was so genius in that character that I cannot watch him in any film now, because I see Lumbergh as soon as I see his face. And he made me hate Lumbergh that much. I'm obviously not the only one. He's in a freaking commercial that has nothing to do with him, in character, and they don't have to explain a thing. Everyone knows it's Lumbergh.

Cole is such a terrific actor, i thought he was the only one who made the Brady Bunch movie bearable.

Gary Cole as Bill Lumbergh might as well have been pushing with him at the office an intravenous drip of lean mixture. It wasn't there with him in the scenes but it feels like it is with him anyway.

+iamknosound that would be awesome! Just imagine the possibilities. But iamknosound1, you know what I think could and probably would ruin it? Hollywood today, from the effects to the actors, to the scripts. I wish there was a film of this nature that would prove otherwise but they seem to be few and far between, as if all the actors are basically stupid and under-acting, and all answering to the tune of a propaganda machine. I can watch Office Space time and time again, it's like a fine wine that never ages.. In contrast, I find that most modern films leave a sour taste in the mouth that one would hardly ever want to sample more than once. Others might have a different view, but I prefer older films such as 70's and 80's titles, and I'd much rather not see a sequel than see one that trashes all over it's predecessor. But I like your idea mknosound.. I think the fans of this film could literally come up with a script in next to no time :)

+QuadTubeChannel I understand how you feel 100%, but I think if Mike Judge does it, and have full control over it I think it would be an awesome sequel. There are great sequels but yes they are few and far between. Most movies no days suck majorly, so it might just be best to leave this Classic be..... :) Whenever work pisses me off, I watch this movie and it makes me laugh at the fools in the Office. haha.
