Garnet - A Montana Ghost Town in HD - Long Version - near Missoula, Montana MT

Garnet - A Montana Ghost Town in HD - Long Version - near Missoula, Montana MT
High in the mountains of western Montana, you will find a REAL ghost town, Garnet, one of Montana’s best-preserved and least visited. Garnet was started in 1895 when gold was discovered.
The town thrived with over 1,200 miners and their families. Garnet had four hotels, four stores, two barbershops, a butcher shop, a doctor’s office, laundry facilities, and thirteen saloons. It even had a stagecoach service!
After a few years, the gold ran out and so did the population. It dwindled down to 150 people by 1905. In 1912 a fire wiped out half of the commercial buildings and was never rebuilt.
What you see today are efforts of stabilization, preservation, and restoration from many volunteers who are dedicated to helping preserve Montana’s rich mining history. Congratulations to each and every one of you!

Does anybody else get that tingling in their heart when they see places like this ? We don't have ghost towns like this in the U.K. Seeing places like this is the reason I'd visit the USA. I look at the images and I can hear the horse hooves and the old wagons creaking past.

We have ghost villages here in Ireland that were flourishing at around the time of the potatoe famine. People either left in search of a better life died from starvation or were kicked out of their homes because they couldn't afford to pay their rent and the villages were just left to rot. I know of one such village in County Mayo where the last resident died in 1978 and today if you asked anyone where the village was they wouldn't be able to tell you it seems like the village had just been wiped out of people's memories. I still go and visit the place every now and then it's a shame the village is still standing our Government could do the houses up and let our homeless people move into them

I spent some time in Garnet when I was a kid, back in the mid 80's. I loved ramming around the old buildings. My grandparents were involved in fund raising for preserving the site, back before the state really got involved in the process. I slept in the large, dark brown building a few nights, I believe it was the hotel back in the day. There was an old play ground up the hill, to the west I believe, chain swings suspended between trees if I recall correctly. It was about a quarter mile hike to get to. I seem to remember that my great grandmothers folks worked or were somehow occupied in Garnet before the depression. Anyway, great clip, it was a pleasant stoll down memory lane.

Awesome comment! My first trip to Garnet was in the early ‘70’s myself. They had just started the process of stabilizing and preservation. The swings you talked about may have been near the old schoolhouse up the hill just west of town. I respect your grandparents being involved in this great historical site. It’s people like them that made Garnet what it is today and for future generations. Thanks again for your first-hand experiences in Garnet. What a treasure. Dave.

I put this one in my top 10! I enjoy the way you just don't show pictures one after the other, but try to have them arranged to show life in a particular building. Showing the outside, different angles, then things inside that reflect the life that existed in that building, then even to the crapper. I really like the amount of art you put into the over-all production so it tells a story to us viewers. . Keep them comin'!

Thank you so much for the kind words. I feel honored that one of my videos made it in your top 10 list. I try to tell a story with videos since I am so bad at narrating (unlike you!) I have a lot of foreign subscribers so I try to make my videos universal. I keep my mouth shut and let the music and scenes speak for themselves. I shoot a lot of video and then try to be creative in post-production, using about 20% of what I shoot. I try to take the best of the best for public display. Someday maybe our paths will cross and we could compare notes! Thanks again for the comments! Stay warm!!! Dave in Montana.

Many thanks for your kind words. Yes, those were simpler days back then. I am so glad that my video made a peaceful impression on you. I must say, this is one of my favorite videos! I had a full day to myself and ended up in Granite by accident (I took the back road instead of the "normal" road). This gave me a lot of time to just explore and capture what ever I found interesting. When you go to Garnet plan on spending an entire day imagining what life was like over a hundred years ago. Can you hear the kids playing in the streets and see horse drawn wagons bringing in supplies? The aroma of freshly baked breads from wood-fed ovens linger in the air waiting for the miners to return home for their evening meal. And you couldn't wait for the weekend thinking about the social gatherings! Just spend time walking the dirt streets and let your imagination run wild (as I just did!) reliving the history of the area.Again, thanks for viewing and commenting. I do appreciate it! Dave in Missoula.

8 years ago my family and I went here as part of our road trip across the west and we took bear gulch pass which was the one lane winding dirt road that zig-zagged to the top. Definitely one of the scariest moments of my life considering our car was a foot from falling off a cliff. Luckily, we found out about the highway to come back down

Yes, Bear Gulch runs into China Grade at the top, just before Garnet. China Grade has been improved greatly since my first trip in 1974. Back then this was the only way to get in/out of Garnet and the road was much narrower and rocky. Definitely not for the faint of heart, back then or now! Thanks for viewing and sharing your experience. Dave.

Pete, I am pleased you made it to Bannack, now owned by the State of Montana (great use of tax dollars, IMO). I wish more of our historic places could be preserved as well. Garnet is one of our ghost towns that a group of people in the '70's thought was too valuable to let vandals destroy. My hat is off to all preservationists in all states. We all need to help preserve the past. It is the foundation for our future. Look me up and we will tour Garnet together! Thanks for visiting and commenting on my video. Dave in Montana.

Visited a few years ago. Beautiful location with tons of cool stuff to view. The main road from hwy 200 is well maintained, but take the other way, from I 90 (the back entrance), and you will definitely feel like you just entered into another time. A single lane dirt road that necessitates high ground clearance, possibly 4 wheel drive, and for miles. This place is worth a visit.

  • @davidegg22

Thanks for viewing and spending the time to comment. Yes, hwy 200 side can accommodate school busses since, like you said, it is well maintained. The I90 side is a bit more challenging, improved a bit since my first journey in 1974 (long before the hwy 200 side was built). It is called China Grade and you know you have been on a "mountain" road; not suitable for trailers or those who are "steep and narrow-two-track--mountain-road" challenged! My preference has always been the I90 side. Thanks again! Dave.

It makes one take pause and wonder what happened to the world since then. Seeing many things like my grandparents and aunts and uncles owned gave me a feeling of being empty and feeling very hollow inside. I have to admit that those were the best days of this nation; it was rough, and not as convenient, but so 'very much healthier.' What happened?

Steve, many thanks for watching and asking. Garnet is accessible by car from both the I90 and the MT-200 sides. The MT-200 side is an easy drive (school bus route) and the I90 route isn't for everyone due to the steepness. Granite is accessible by car just like Elkhorn, Comet, Coolidge and Glendale. I have captured all of these ghost towns and posted them on my channel. Another ghost town that comes to mind is Bannack. It's been years since I explored that country, but it is a state park and easily accessible. Thanks again for viewing and commenting. Do have fun exploring Montana's ghost towns. 5:00 I just caught a glimpse and had to back it to see if I really saw it, but ...wow The Majestic was a White Star Line ship captained by Smith as well as Lightoller having served on it prior to being assigned to the Titanic. Her last crossing was in 1914 and then she was sold for scrap, so I couldn't help but wonder if this stove ( I'm assuming that is a door on one ) came from it or if it is just a decoration piece. Fascinating history in just that single shot if this is one of them. 👍
